Ash filtered through water gives you soda ash water. In fact they used to run water through charcoal several times until an egg would float in it and then made soap out of it. So your fiber will be very alkaline and will be fun to use to dye with something else. I have never heard of ash dying anything but it will change the PH. You will have to let us know what happens when you try it again.

How very interesting, Catherine, thank you for sharing 🤎 Makes perfect sense! I will have to try dyeing that piece of fiber from the 'ash slurry' to see what happens. I was thinking more about the charcoal as a pigment as opposed to the ash content, but as you saw from this video, it didn't work like the red mud. Experimentation is so fascinating 😊

I love your videos….I was just in NC and forged some flowers and plants….so much fun. I found some great rusty bits at the local flea market. I can’t wait to use them. Interesting using the red dirt and charcoal….

How sweet, Nancy, thank you! I love foraging, so cool you got to do that on your trip. I've actually been looking for rusty bits myself, so maybe I'll have to check out a flea market too - great idea! I hope to try more earth pigment dyeing in the future. It was fun to test it out and I know more colors are waiting for me 🤎

@@MargaretByrdColorQuest im so sorry, totally forgot to answer you ❤️☺️. Well we had a really hot summer, sunny and warm. But i managed to drive up the Sulphur cosmos, beutiful flower 🥰 but discovered that the flower bleeded out on the most fabric, how annoying 🤪,,, but a very strong color though. Love them, and the leaf is very nice to work with. Now the autumn has come 🥺 and a looooooong winter is ahead,, bläääähhhhhhh it's very beautiful outside now but i prefer the spring and summer. 🤗❤️❤️❤️👍

@@sveapea72 Yes, it seemed like Europe had quite the hot summer and even spring! I bet your sulphur cosmos were gorgeous 🧡 Those vibrant stars in eco-printing can often bleed, but it is still so pretty. Hope you can find fun in your dye studio this winter to keep the cold away 😉

Thank you ! Do I need to mordan the fabric for the mud die? I live so close to the red rock mountains :)
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest Жыл бұрын
You are most welcome - lucky to have those amazing red rock mountains in your homeland! Yes, you can soak your fiber in soy milk after scouring it to help with the pigment binding. You can also consider a tannin soak which could react to the iron in the mud for a darkening effect. I wish I had tried this last year and hope to explore that process more as well in the future. Have fun!

What can be used instead of soya milk?
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest 11 ай бұрын
You can work with traditional metal mordants like alum to help bond the mud to the fiber. If you use tannin, and there is iron in your mud, it can also be used to welcome darker colors. There are so many different types of mud, so experimentation is the way to go.

when out foraging for Earth pigments i just look for a larger flat stone to use as a mortar and a round or longish smooth stone for a pestle. it works perfectly : ) and saves having to haul a heavy mortar and pestle around : )

I was rooting for that red! the end result cool too! I hope I can get to the orange patch of dirt/clay on the trails this weekend. It seems like its just in patches scattered. One persons driveway is pure orange and then the others are plain :) Since I have never dyed with mud before how long is the soaking period and if not on the road can you heat it? Or was this just a 'lets try and see what happens" kinda thing 😁
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest 2 жыл бұрын
Remember to pack those baggies to scoop up some orange dirt! If it's orange, it's got iron oxide in it and is a wonderful earth pigment. I have made a few attempts at mud dyeing with very limited success. This time was one of the better results and I suspect it had to do with the tannin mordant and soy milk binder 'oomph'. Personally, I wouldn't heat mud, but rather give it a lot more time to soak than I did. Plus, I lost all of my liquid which certainly had an impact. If you still have some outdoor heat, why not let it sit in a sunny place and see if that solar heat will help. Let's try and see what happens 😉

@@MargaretByrdColorQuest I'll do! I have lots of bread bags I have been saving and I have also seen lots of colored mushroom too I wanted to try my hands at. I also think I found a Jewel Orchid in the forest there too and been meaning to try and contact someone to confirm it (they don't grow in the US. I hope I may have discovered something! )

@@jessicabey275 You are a foraging queen! Definitely do your research on mushrooms please. There are so many that hold color, but wouldn't want you to pick anything poisonous 😕 I'm going to the Fungi & Fiber Symposium in late October, so maybe I'll pick up a trick or two to share. I have never heard of a Jewel Orchid, but my bet is that you found yourself a real gem 😘

hey!! very nice video!! I am an armature in natural dyeing....i have a question.... does this mud dye stays or goes away after few washes?? and did you post treated the mud dyed fabric? if yes then with what????
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Aneesha! By using soy milk as a binder on the fiber, earth pigments like iron oxide can last a long time on fiber. Letting the pigment set for some time before washing it and treating it carefully with cold water washing and air drying will also help color last longer. There is no post-treatment in this video - just show your fiber lots of gentle love...and have fun!
