I'm 65 years old and didn't pick up a guitar until my mid 50's. There are a lot of physical things my body just can't do anymore. I do speed drills for 10 minutes literally every single day. I can not get over 120 8th notes played cleanly. My brain to finger circuit is just not what it used to be when I was younger. So, I have gravitated to playing music that doesn't focus on shredding. David Gilmour style is a good example. I LOVE playing guitar every day and play just for my personal enjoyment. On another note, I highly recommend Guitar Pro for it's ability to not just slow down songs but to use as a backing track by muting just the lead/rhythm guitar parts.

Brian, thank you so much for responding to my comment with this video! I think it's awesome you're so responsive to people on here. You are by far the best thing going as far as learning the guitar on the internet because you keep it real and down to earth but also because you have a deep understanding and your communication skills are excellent. I wanted to tell you that the part I was working on was the last solo on Fade to Black not the first one but I applied what you were saying there and it helped. I had been just practicing those two really fast phrases with a metronome but I got a subscription to Ultimate Guitar, which pretty much has Guitar Pro imbedded in it, and started practicing with the track and I've almost got the whole thing down to the full tempo. Dam it feels good to finally be playing it like I am! I also really took a critical look at my technique and found that I had been tensing up and holding the pick at an awkward angle when I approached those particular spots and I eased up on how hard I am pressing down on the frets which was a game-changer for sure. I'm still going thru all your free videos here on KZbin because you've got a frkn wealth of info here but I intend to buy a membership to your site soon. Thanks again, I really appreciate all you do!

Maybe your next video could be about how to fudge the crazy parts? Things like sneaking in legato to hard picking passages, using a compressor or higher gain to smooth out dynamics, and figuring out alternate ways to play parts (maybe you can tap instead of that crazy string skip?) And so on.

As always Brian, you are one of the best. My unsolicited advise and something I always have to remind myself on, is to just slow down. I've found a lot of times if a fast run is coming up, I get all worked up and way overplay the part. Muscle memory of the part helps a bunch, but just slow down some

Such clear teaching! All of this made me think of what is my software tool kit that I use constantly? Guitar Pro, Transcribe!, Reaper, Guitar Rig amp sim, Modtronome for desktop, APTuner for desktop, Band in a Box, Multi-timer. What a great time for guitarists with all these wonderful tools.

We are lucky to have all of these tools. I still remember the pre internet days of rewinding tapes/CDs over and over until I had the part figured out 😁

Making your own tabs is an awesome way to improve your musicianship! What messes me up is trying to figure out which string/fret for a particular note. Neither position makes sense and their timbre is too close tell. 😢 Awesome video as always, thank you Brian!

I suppose the best objection is...think of your top 10 list of greatest guitarists ever. Did any of them have access to Guitar Pro, or even a computer? This doesn't mean using Guitar pro isn't going to give you an advantage in today's field, but it's hard to argue it's a necessity. I suppose the counter argument would be, 'well those people spent hundreds of hours practicing and maybe, with modern technology, I can cut down that time?' Yeah...maybe. How many hundreds of hours are you going to spend proving that? Plus, if modern technology is so amazing at producing great guitarists...original guitar music should theoretically be at it's prime right now. Maybe you think it is, but I suspect you'd be in the minority. You're not helped by the fact you're trying to reproduce a piece of music written forty years ago. (I have no doubt that more people can play the solo to 'Fade to Black' today that ever in the past. I am more doubtful as to whether that is actual progress.) Another objection is: if you are programming it yourself, how do you know it is right? I guess you have to keep listening to the original, slowing it down, analysing it in depth and then comparing...but then, what part of that process is the main ingredient in you 'nailing' the solo? The hit and miss programming, or the deep listening? Maybe both. Doing something 'millions of times' will generally make you more adept at it. One valid question might be: is the best use of a person's limited practice time? I think it also probably depends on what your aims are as a guitarist. If your aim is to be a guitarist in a covers band or just to 'nail' someone else's musical creation, then I can see this being worthwhile, if you're struggling with remembering certain sections or getting up to speed. If you aim is to write your own music, then using Guitar Pro to help with that might also be a good idea, just as a notepad, if nothing else. I think the process of having to think in depth about any piece of music will help embed that in your memory. There are so many videos out there promising...'just do this one thing and you will master the guitar'. Problem, often being that 'one thing' has to be done 'millions of times' to find out if it works. I have no doubt that Brian can play a note perfect version of this particular solo and is very adept at using Guitar Pro and hey....I like the guy, watch plenty of his videos and subscribed to Zombie Guitar. I don't mean to be too negative, I'm just getting fed up with endless clickbait in my recommendations promising...'do this one thing and you will get better'. Yes, I have a choice as to whether to click...but it's how the human brain works...you're always hoping maybe this is the piece of the puzzle I'm missing? No doubt some of this advice is decent, but the viewer is just as likely to end up feeling...'well which piece of advice do I follow?...I can't do it all'. Something that was possibly designed at installing confidence ends up reducing it. Maybe those old guitarists stuck listening to a knackered old cassette or piece of vinyl over and over again had one mighty advantage we tend to lack....less distractions.

Learning the notes and the phrasing of the notes is how you learn a solo.
@Gmaxxxman
@Gmaxxxman 19 күн бұрын
yeah but just think, those guitarists were thinking how awesome it was just to be able to hear that music on whatever recording they had and I'm sure there were people saying that was cheating and that you should be able to go on memory alone....I guess there's pro's and con's to all technology but I think the most important thing is to have clear goals in mind and then use everything available to reach them. But there's no substitute for practice, you've gotta put in the reps....
