Isn't the first problem you present 3-ethylbutane? Why would you include a branch in the number of carbons if it's not the first or last carbon?

Can anyone pls explain why the 1st example won't have 6 carbons? Even though the 6th one isnt in the chain but it's still in the compound right, so in total shouldn't they be 6?

You cant have carbon backbone breaking in to 2 parts. You have to follow 1 path. Either the horizontal one, in the example, or that which takes a turn downwards. So now u know u have to take one path, second thing is it should be highest in carbon number, i.e. which path can get u more carbon atoms. Thats what i think she wanted to say, but you should still verify from some professional.
