The blender actually works, most people just happen to use it the wrong way. To blend colours, you first need to put down a layer of colourless blender. Afterwards put the colours you want to blend on top of that. Be sure to apply a bit of pressure with your marker to push the colours into eachother until you have a seamless gradient.

Actually the way to use a colorless blender is that you have to use the blender FIRST. You kay down a layer of colorless ink and then lay down the colors you want to blend on top of that. If you want more blending then you go back and use the blender again.

The blender is actually a really good CORRECTOR. Little bits of color that are painted out of the lines can be bleached away or some people say "push" the color to where it's supposed to be, has long has the color area where you did your little doodoo is white, if it's on an area already painted you'll bleach out both colors : )

I also did better with a new tablet. :P But I was lucky enough to go from a 10+ yr old Wacom to a knock off drawing monitor. My line arts improved in leaps and bounds. Digital painting is a transition... But I do agree the materials only take you so far... I had years of experience with a tablet and the new one just improved one of my weak areas because I knew how to make line art traditionally already and i'd just finished inktober... The only time I think materials will matter is in the limits the cheaper ones have such as the lack of color options of water based markers... And the fact that they stain from other colors where the more expensive alcohol (not copics alone) can clean that ink out... But the more expensive is still useless if you have no skill to couple or experience to add... A copic cant make a oval a circle... But practice could.

I have some tips while drawing with markers! - If you are drawing with pencil, you can dab the blender to the pencil lineart so i does not smears the line art! - you can use blender to fix mistake! If you color out of the line, you can use the blender to fix it! - i would recommend using cheaper marker before going to copics. Copics is a professional markers. They are also too expensive rather than a cheaper marker price is, and try to learn on how to use a marker first! Then you can go to copics! Edit : I got these tips from my sister! Tip: *when you want to blend with the colourless blender, put it down on the paper first so the ink flows, or use it to drag the dark colour into the light area gently, then blend as normal without it. You can get smooth gradients either way.*
@Bthmcrlvr4 жыл бұрын
FYI a colourless blender is a great tool, if you know how to use it. You need to layer down the colourless blender first, then go over the top with the colours. It just simply helps blend the two colours together with out the consistent layering.

@samusai7 жыл бұрын
Technically you can use it to blend into white if you want the effect of a shine without harsh line. Another technique is the "tip-to-tip" method where you can place the tip of a colored Copic to the tip of a Colorless blender to create a lighter shade. The third method I've seen people do with the colorless blender and actually use that one first, pretty much wetting the area with colorless ink to let you lay down a smooth layer of color, and it does make it easier to blend on top of it since it's better to blend wet-on-wet ink. So yes you can use it to blend, just not in a way that seems well...obvious to use. I didn't know about the third way until about 3 years ago when I saw somebody do that at a worshop.

Just a little thought. Use something other than marker paper. Marker paper is too thin. That's why you're getting that Feathering. It's not that you're using too much ink, it's your paper. Good video though.
@JunifarbenIllustration7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I will try that! Honestly I still like my marker paper, mostly because I don't waste too much ink and I can easily blend the colors. I tried them out in my mixed media sketchbook and in this one the colors are all looking slightly different. I didn't expect that ^^" But you're right, marker paper is super thin.

If you know its going to get saturated you can try Poster/cardstock. Its a bit heavier but cheaper then copic paper. Still has the slight bleed but it can take a lot more abuse. @DanaHerbb7 жыл бұрын
To be fair, thicker paper makes the markers bleed as well. I find Marker Paper to make them bleed the least, but I don't like the way it looks for some reason.. Thing is, when you use really thick paper you actually waste more ink, due to the paper sucking up more :/
@batsybats55917 жыл бұрын
Dana H I use sketch paper,lmao. It's kind of in between. Not too thin,not too thick. The ink lasts forever and the markers don't bleed a lot

But i wouldent recomand marker paper, it is over priced ( at least in my land! i can buy a 500 pages watercolour A3 block for 20 dollar, but marker paper with 100 thin pages cost 40- 50 dollar) And you can only blend and lay on colours to a certain point before you draw a hole in the marker paper ^^; And i get nervous since the paper is so thin! thick paper is more durable in the end :) But thats my preferance XD

3:43 The colorless blender blends in the same way as a blend from light to dark. You start with your lightest color, which is your colorless blender and just like with light and dark colors you can't jump from very light to very dark but use mid-tones. So yes it is a blender if used properly because it saturates the paper with a blender solution and helps the next color to move in the fiber of the paper.

I know this video is old but you can actually blend with the colourless blender! You just can't really blend two colours or a dark colour. The blender works best as... Well a blender when you are trying to blend a light colour out into the paper. Mid to dark colours don't blend as well. Other good uses for the blender is correcting small colouring mistakes and creating cool textures and effects.

My birthday is in a few days and my mom got me pretty expensive alcohol-based markers, and I've been researching a lot about them and how to use them because I don't want to ruin them haha. This video definitely showed me things that I did not know before about alcohol markers. Thanks a lot!

Haha, I always use the blender marker to color by touching another marker to it. I always thought it wasn't a legitimate technique until now.
@ratscentral83777 жыл бұрын
The blender is supposed to be used before you put colors i think???? Im guessing, and saw someone successfully blend by using it first so thats probably what you need to do. But I was confused about it literally until only a hour ago /after watching the video and seeing her do it/

This may sound a bit cruel,but I think you're not using a proper paper for your markers. The colors seem a bit off and random tiny darker blops of ink are located in the colored area. Marker paper and Copic Marker paper (especially made for copics) usually don't work out for most people. Maybe you should experiment with different papers?(try (kinda) cheap ones too)( I'm working with sketch book paper that isn't really expensive at all and works super well with the copics and fineliners I use) But of course,if you are satisfied with the paper it's completely fine. Everyone to their own,by all means. Though I think the paper kind of "takes away the quality" of colors and the artwork. Overall,it's a very informative video. Good job ^^

yea thats what i thought too. i like using mix media because the paper is thicker and i can layer more without making those weird splotches that happen with marker paper.

I prefer using watercolour paper ( 200 g thic ) :) Then i can blend as much as i like and i can use watercolour, paint etc :) And id dont suck up too mutch ink, i have 6 years of experience with copics and watercolour paper XD I had the same markers for 6 years and only a few of the ones i used the most went dry! :D I did alot of full coloured A3 and A4 drawings too :) I always buy sketch book paper that is from 200 - 160 g thic since it is perfect for testing colours, blending and colouring small sketches :)

another good tip- don’t let random people at school use your expensive markers. i brought my markers into school first time i ever got them in 7th grade bc i was so proud of them (i’m now a freshman in high school) but this random kid asked to use them and i knew they were high quality but i let him anyway and THIS LITTLE SHIT uses the brush side of my copic and starts jABBING HIS PAPER to make fucking POKA DOTS. i snatched that out of his hand so fast oh my god people who don’t know how to take care of supplies annoy me so much to the point if i bring in my prismacolour coloured pencils in i wont even let them use those bc i’m not letting them end up snapped in half like every other wooden pencil in a school.

Wow, that's a crazy story :D It's heartbreaking even just to read that super expensive stuff was used to do some doodles 😱 If I was in that situation, I would have died XD

Thank you for informing me about the colorless blender. I did try to use it to blend colors and that wouldn't happen, it's a very mismatch name, I'll take your advice about it. thanks!
@spencergoth1cgutz2055 жыл бұрын
You can make really cool effects with the colourless blender by tapping on the ink with it, laovaan has a really cool video about that on his channel (without wanting to put your content down, I just think its really cool how he coloured the hair almost rainbow like with that technique) And for markers and blending I'd really recommend the rendr sketchbook, it might seem a bit more expensive than the copic sketchbooks or other marker paper etc. but it's really the best paper for marker, especially when blending, it doesn't bleed through at all and shouldn't use too much ink either because it's not heavyweight (a lot of people complain about their paper either bleeding through too easily or soaking up too much ink)
@primposi28356 жыл бұрын
A cool blending trick ive picked up that works well for me is putting down the base color, adding the shade color then going back with the base color to blend it in. Works like a charm
@hanaotaku59507 жыл бұрын
Why not make another video with the same idea but with content for more experienced artists? I've been using markers for a few months now and I managed to blend and avoid smearing black now but I just can't seem to prefect my art like I want I have no problem with drawing but with coloring
@JunifarbenIllustration7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestion, that's a very good idea :) I will try to come up with some helpful tips the next time, to prepare a new video ^^ But it won't go up until next year, because I pre-recorded stuff for December🙃

You actually can blend with the blender. You need to saturate your paper with it and then quickly add your colors on top while it sill hasn’t dried. That works great for me. Another use, is to take a plastic piece, put your darker color on it, and then use your blender to pick up color from the plastic piece, and add on top of your other color you want to blend with. (You need to have applied some blender on top of the color before you do that too)
