Fantastic work on the guitar, and very helpful explanation! Thank you! The one thing that’s aesthetically challenging for me personally is the combination of stop tail bridge with humbuckers. Since Gibson introduced the ABR-1 bridge a year or so before introducing PAFs, this pairing, to my knowledge, never came out of the factory on any 50s LP. So why not have it with P-90s/stoptail and be ‘54 accurate, or ABR-1/PAF and be ‘57 accurate? Pigtail makes a great ABR-1 and tailpiece as well.

Super helpful video for making slots in the new StewMac metal saddles. I made the mistake of using Graphtech saddles when my originals were worn in my 83 Les Paul. Those non-OEM type, non-metallic saddles really killed the sustain. OEM style saddles from StewMac are the only way to go.

john kingsford the original trapeze tailpiece ones were an engineering fail. the production Les Paul was not taken seriously from an engineering standpoint and Les himself was playing DIY guitars that just looked like the production ones. Really to this day the LP has never been fully right. Jimmy D Aquisto told me this in 1981 when I went to NYC for the first time in my life. I was selling retrofit computer control for paper tape NC machines and taking classical guitar lessons...those were good days. I digress..

First, thanks for sending me this video link... I have an issue with a One-Off Benedetto guitar I ordered years ago with the plain G string. First let me say one of the modifications I had added to the Bambino Model was I wanted to have a Tuno-O-Matic style bridge (which is mounted on top of the wood cradle like the stock wood saddle bridge would be). The Plain G String always seems kind of dead like it is not vibrating freely. (Especially noticeable when playing the string open). I did change the string (a few times) to rule that out, and also determined that it is not the nut, because this issue persist even when playing notes up the neck. I figured it must be the saddle causing the issue. Perhaps a burr or some other issue with the saddle itself. What would you recommend I do? Should I trying filing the saddle slot a little to make sure there are no burrs, etc....Or would you recommend another approach. I would need the correct size file should a filing be recommended. Thanks as always. Philip NYC Area

If that’s the case I’ll go buy one right now because I just bought a replacement and I didn’t know they came with the notches not cut in before hand I didn’t know you had to do it yourself.

@Satchmoeddie

For what this cost I'd have bought one of the German made copy bodies or made my own & reused the neck. This is beautiful work, but it is like a 57 Strat I got with a large battery & preamp compartment carved in it. I filled it with an Alder plug & repainted it Fiesta Red. I still worry about a bastardized 57 Strat being out there. You'd never know it was fix & refin. You might also mention the lightning bar wrap around Melody Maker bridges were made for a wound G string.

Ive ordered a new tune o matic bridge for my epi casino, do I have to file the saddles to fit the strings ? I never understood why the saddles have a V cut in them, when the strings are round ?
@stewmac
@stewmac 6 жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes, you should fine tune the string grooves on your tune-o-matic bridge saddles using gauged nut slotting files. As you mentioned, there are some tune-o-matic bridge saddles that come with a V-shape pre-cut into them. These are intended to be starter grooves, and already have a pre-determined string spread. We recommend taking a look at the following article, Trade Secrets! Issue 109: Are you supposed to slot Tune-o-matic bridge saddles? www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online_Resources/Hardware_Installation/Are_you_supposed_to_slot_Tune-o-matic_bridge_saddles.html

Yup, basically gives you a head start on intonation if you've got adjustable saddles. It would be harder and require a bigger bridge if it wasn't angled.

I have a Gibson es135. When the luthier popped the nut out, it was glued in so strongly that some wood in the nut cavity area where the nut sits ripped out. The luthier filed the area down to smoothen it all out. But now both sides near the E strings are lower than the middle. The middle has a hump. It appears the nut cavity area will have to have a nut made twice the height as a normal nut. I didn't trust the luthier to go any further. So my question is this: How will a good luthier have to build the nut cavity back up? Put in a mix of wood powder and glue and then file the area level for the new nut? Thanks..

Steve Lewis That was not a Lutheir that did that to your 135. Ironically, there are a ton of people out there who watch some KZbin vids, buy some tools off Stewmac and then think they know what they are doing. Most of them couldn't sharpen a chisel to save their lives. I've seen a ton of guitars butchered by these people. In fact some of them proudly display their ' mods' on their own channel.

MojoAxe makes a replacement bridge for a 54 tailpiece bridge that keeps the look of the original but is compensated for today's lighter strings, plus it's intonated by having an almost invisible ridge which is essentially like having the saddles in the right place to begin with. Most people that buy a 54 Les Paul(reissue, replica, etc.)want to keep that old school look. i.ebayimg.com/images/g/l00AAOSwuDFcZ19r/s-l640.jpg www.mojoaxe.com/

Don't use a not slot file on a tune-o-matic, the string will sit too low and catch on the saddle adjustment screw and you will have to buy a new saddle. The clearance is too small for nut files. They don't mention this which is annoying.

You either make the guitar playable or you don't. You can place it behind glass and see it as an investment. But to tell truth, lots of old guitars suck in stock. Some tuners don't work as they should, some electronics care about the weather too much. Lots of fantastic LP's are made out of 3 or even 5 pieces. After floods and transport damages some found out that there are bodies made of 3 kinds of wood (not including the top). If some legend added changes to their guitar, it forms character and is maybe worth more. If a professional luthier rebuilds a conversation turned bad, everyone just sees that it isn't like it used to be from the factory. Somewhere out there you'll find one that is proud to have his original strings on his vintage guitar with the bad setup directly from the factory.

No file. Tap only. Better tone and sustain. A well set up guitar with a higher action shouldn't run into issues. Only for the guys that have to have that super low action with dental floss strings is when it can become problematic. Inexperienced stay away from pre notched Saddles it's a gamble 50% of the time. Just know a file is not always your friend and how deep you make the slots is crucial. String just needs to stick. If the guitar is played on a regular basis in time each one of those slots will deepen a few hairs more without using a file at all.

after you 'fix' this a few more times the body will still have about 30% of its original top. ggoooodd job. LOOK is original though. I know you guys believe what you did was right. The fixer\luthier before you(perhaps an actual owner) thought so to. She may have changed much but your fix changed even more. I'm only making a philosophical argument about originality not good guitarness, playability,sound,tone or client satisfaction. I just happen to now believe that every guitar needs to be played and whatever one does to "get the job done" needs to be seriously contemplated in the WHY WTF OK IC area. PEACE be with you my brothers.

+therugburnz I get your pt, but I also understand the POV that replacing one large chunk is "cleaner" than a butcher block approach. I'm sure they had to remove a bunch of wood in order to remove the Bondo. And if you look closely at 2:05, you can see that it already had a large rectangular piece of maple in the center, which was either from the factory, or part of the later work.

I’d rather do this and make a flawed design better than spend an extra $50k for a 1957 or 1960 les paul

So, that guitar is owned by Bill Gates or Zuckerberg? I mean, how many thousands did that remake cost??

My thoughts exactly! It must be a really good guitar!. But if you route out all the “old magic wood” (not trying to start a flame war here) will that not affect/ruin/alter/de-vintage the sound? I get that it was ruined to begin with but still. I’m not trying to be a smart ass here, just simply wondering.

Lars Christiansen Yep, it will alter it a little. Just how much? I don't know. I plan to remove a LOT of wood from the back of my guitar to lighten it. It's like a boat anchor now. So, that'll likely alter the tone a little bit but man, my back and shoulder will not care. hahahhaa

+cgavin1 Those old bridges are a piece of crap. Obviously it depends on the owner, for collectors is almost killing the guitar, but for a working musician I guess he preferred the intonation problem solved.

And also that is not a 1954 Les Paul. That is a modern guitar that looks ever so slightly like an earlyish Les Paul. Can we all just stop telling lies about this stuff?

The craftsmanship is amazing, but the customer should be ashamed. Putting humbuckers in a vintage Deluxe is short-sighted, at best. Putting humbuckers in a an original '54 is criminal. Unjustifiable. If you don't want 90s or minis, sell the guitar and buy a Standard. Why is this such a hard concept? There is a finite number of these antiques left - leave them alone!

I just don’t understand why you go to such great lengths to repair/restore such an iconic guitar…then screw all your hard work with a razor blade…if you wanted a worn looking axe…why didn’t you just leave it alone?? You say what a nice relic job…no, someone ruined a beautiful instrument.

Holy crap that swimming pool route is a travesty, that’s massive massive overkill, if you’re replacing that much wood replace the guitar , some messy routes hidden under the pickups aren’t worth cutting the face off. Once that finish settles in the seams of this hack job will be visible a mile away
