Thanks for the detailed run down of all your steps as well as details on what supplies you used. I will be tackling my first vintage fan tonight!

I bought a GE Whiz fan 10 years ago that was made in 1919 and it looked like it had the original oil in the oil cups. The congealed oil looked like and had the consistency of black candle wax. I had to dig the hardened oil out with a screwdriver. I've tried different oils but like using Hoppe's gun oil. I found that I had to replace the wicks because even cleaning the old ones was not good enough to properly wick the oil up.

Thank you so much for those of us who are just starting out. My love for vintage fans far outweighs my experience in maintenance on them. I need to check to see if you have any videos on later models that have motors and how to grease those.

I don't really have to many fan videos at the moment. I do have quite a few in my collection so I need to work on that.

We have an Emerson in our garage that looks just like the one you pull apart. It’s been in our family most of its life. We use ours often and I add Zoom oil once a year. Maybe I’ll be brave enough to open up the gear box and clean it up. The fan slows down when it gets hot, so that’s what brought me to your video.

Dawn soap is a great degreaser, naptha also good. If you use soap and water be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry then soak with fresh oil.

I keep reading and watching videos on how to oil the gear box. Some articles say to use 20w non detergent oil and some say to grease the gear box. They state the gear box started with oil but time has turned it into what looks like grease. They say to replace the gearbox grease with oil as it was designed to have oil to travel from cup to shaft and back to cup. For cooling the oil.

Goop hand cleaner or Gojo hand cleaner( without the grit) will work a lot better in dissolving the oil. just work it into the wick, let it soak inside of a ckosed plastic bag for 10 - 15 min. Rinse in warm water. You can even do this with fan parts like the stator when disassembling and cleaning. It will not hurt anything on or IN the fan!👍

Thank you for the video. I have an old English Limit fan, cream coloured, probably 1950s, It has a hole in the top (in front of the button to engage rotate) is this the hole for oiling? or would I need to disassemble the back? Cannot find any old manuals or info online.

I am so new to this and slightly overwhelmed LOL! these videos are helpful though. so if the fan doesnt have the oil cup, there is no wick to change out?

I have the Robbinson and Myers3854-C and in back of my blades is a screw, do I untighten that screw and add oil in the hole or does that screw stay tightened

Hi bud. I just picked up a marelli verno that runs great. I've replaced the old gunk with fresh oil and grease in the oscillator but can't seem to find new wick material on ebay. If you could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

bought an old Emerson fan exactly like this about 2 weeks ago, it spins freely but of course the wiring is shot and it only has one Grease cup in the back.

i use dishwashing liquid to clean my gears and interior parts. melts the grease right outta there without putting solvents on what might be a brass/steel gear or the other NON METAL parts. saves time and keeps it from maybe damaging the gears and I always shoot some photos on my phone so there is absolutely NO guesswork during reassembly..Great video though, well done

I have a Freshend-Aire circa 1950 ish with an oil port. I know to just add few drops but I've never had any idea how often I should do so. It's seems like a basic question but I've never gotten an answer. I just add some oil every now and then and hope I'm not over or under doing it.

Hi ,I've got one just like this, mine is a 73648. I love the thing to death, and have had it for 25 years and I will never part with it. Funny enough I also love old Chryslers like I can see is your handle. I have not serviced mine and will do so now I have the oil and I'm ordering the grease . Up until three days ago why so it ran so smoothly like an old airplane butI think I put the wrong oil in it which was given to me ,and I have an issue and a few other things I would like to discuss with you if that would be all right. I am a member of an old fan forum can't exactly think which one now ,but if I could get in touch with you? I have two other Emerson's also ,but this one is the king. Alex

In my opinion I would leave the blade with the patina since it makes it look old. This is my opinion though.
@ph28694 жыл бұрын
I agree, the patina is perfect. The oldness is what is special about it.
