This was super helpful. Made me rethink my approach. My ollie progression had been stalled for months. I had been able to get some air and ollie up a curb, but it was very inconsistent and everything looked and felt awkward. Every attempt felt different from the last. I was doing too many things wrong to list and basically needed to just start from scratch. I am now more focusd on the jump/pop part of the ollie. I was too preoccupied with trying to slide my front foot which was throwing everything off. Also had my trucks too lose. Right now I am just trying to build consistency with my rolling ollies and get everything smooth, relaxed, and repeatable. Not worried about leveling the board out or getting really high at the moment. My ollies are starting to look and feel a lot better, albeit lower to the ground

It’s not always easy to make it work, popping before. However, focusing on it more, you’ll be able to make it work more often. Leading to better Ollie’s.

What a breakdown! Got back into skating this year after like 20 years, and still had ollie mechanics but they have been off a bit and I didn't know why. You just made me realize that I was bending forward too much when I squat down and it made my balance and ollies inconsistent.

You sir are invaluable in your contributions to advancing skating. I’ve been skating long enough for this vid to be not applicable but can completely understand and acknowledge the contribution to its effectiveness. Norman knows what’s up. Listen please listen and you will advance. Good luck! Great skating! And have fun!

I'm coming back after many years off with injuries and trying to get ollies I'm happy with again. So, I've been trying to dissect my ollie. I've been looking at a number of beginner level ollie videos to see if I can diagnosis what it is I'm not happy with and this one is by far the best video I've watched. My take away is that I'll go somewhere I can see my reflection in a window to see if I'm not keeping my back straight. If you are watching this video as a beginner learning to ollie take note of his back foot placement. I've always called that the pocket, but he is calling the same thing the ollie box. Great video Norman.

Hey Norman, you're one of the best teachers on KZbin. The only one to talk about full body posture when learning tricks. Everyone else just tells you what to do with your feet/legs. A beginner question I have is about pop direction. Almost no one has touches on this, and most say you need to pop straight down. I've heard you mention briefly about a slight backwards pop in another video but can you expand on what a beginner trying to learn ollies should do? Pop straight down? Backwards? Only slightly backwards? Thanks

you can make a video giving tips to teach the correct Sw skating form, or tips to maximize the Sw skating form, really the body posture changes a lot and sometimes it's confusing, since the nollie is usually very in front and when you go fakie the gaze goes against the direction you are going. your tips are a great help.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods Жыл бұрын
That’s a difficult one. Honestly, the way I got better at switch was skating everywhere switch, as I learned switch tricks. A friend recommended this to me, and it helped me get better at it over time. Whenever you skate just for transportation, only allow yourself to skate switch. It’ll become easier over time.

@@5kidsand2dogs exactly the trick I first applied it to. Bryan Herman does a nollie flip, in a line, from his This is Skateboarding part. I noticed the way he pushed his front foot forward, and it made the back foot need to work less for flipping the board. I’ve done it since then.

I hear this from tutorial videos a lot, but in my opinion ollies are not done by slamming the tail down first, then jumping. I understand that people that figured it out themselves tend not to know exactly what it happening, but I came across a lot of people struggling because of this tip. As I see it, one squats down, begin pushing down into the ground with both feet, propelling themselves upwards, THEN the tail is popped after the "jumping" motion has been started and pretty much provided more than half of it's propulsion. The jumping and popping motion is obviously not separate from each other, and it overlap early and late, but I found I was ollieing higher the later my pop is, and I had enough time to extend my legs from a deep squat BEFORE I pop the tail. This also ensures that the body is extended at the point of the pop, meaning that you can compress it in the air to bring the board up. I dunno man, I'm no pro skater and I could be wrong! Loving your content and stoked about your brand!

7:47 and 10:20 You keep saying "once the tail hits the ground, you jump" That's not how it happens though, the tail is released from your foot BEFORE both you and it hit the ground. If you just jumped after the tail hit the ground then you would just do a hippy jump... The whole key is the tail is released before you hit the ground, that's the only way any force can be applied for it to be "popped" and rebound up to you. I'm sure you actually know this but this but the way you said it is wrong and will make it more confusing for someone if they are following what you say here literally and closely

Not for a beginner. I have a frame by frame of me doing this. I teach kids this way, I’m the beginning and have for a long time. Beginners don’t Ollie the way you Ollie later on. Your technique has to evolve as you skate longer. I’ve taught a couple of hundred people this way. If you want the screen grabs, give me your email address.
