the problem I have is the handle doesn't pull the pins far enough into the tailgate to clear the hitches on both sides

@@hankeysgameing8745 I too had the same problem. I finally fixed it by replacing the tailgate latch rods. The ones on my 1995 GMC Sierra 1500 had stretched to the point that the tailgate was hard to open. After taking out the old ones and comparing them with the new ones, the difference in size was obvious. I hope this helps. - Richie - P.S. Not so I have a 1998 Chevy 2500 just had to replace the fuel pump and of course the strap wouldn't come loose so I had to take the bed off 😊😊

07 Chevy Silverado plastic broke tailgate stuck. Check out video. I just bent the metal made it like a hook put it in the hole. engineering by gm just like the dashboards. Plastic never holds up. Thanks for info great video.

Instead of buying the plastic rod holder things just save yourself time and bend the rod into a hook. Thanks for the video! Helped lots

Might be easier to jamb something between the side latch so you don’t need the needle nose pliers. One less thing ya know? Thanks for the video👍🏼

Last resort take long flathead screw drive look down edge of tailgate and see latch ,stick screwdriver down into latch and twist ,do this on each side of tai Lgate. And it will open

This happened on my 20003 Silverado 2500. I found some clips at Pep Boys and put them on. Now Pep Boys is long gone and I hope it never happens again . Who else sells them?

I have a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic. Same exact problem. My plastic clip is green. The right hand side. It's the second time I replaced it. I replaced it today. That's pretty common in all them Chevrolets. If they made that clip out of metal. Chevrolet couldn't make no money off of it. Chevrolet just don't want to spend the money and make it out of metal. Plastic junk.

Stick a long screw driver down between end of tailgate and truck bed to manually push latch in.

oil pivot on latch and pry or tap rods apart. oil latches too.
