Thank you for this information. My friend of my sister locked her keys in the trunk and the car doors were locked. We were able to get the door open but the security system on the car shut everything down after we opened the door. Glad I could help! As far as whats draining your battery, other than the usual leaving a light on, there is something that may cause that. Some of the power ports in many cars stay on even when the key is off. Some stay on and some turn off with everything else... So if you have a charger, a separate navigation or something like that plugged into one of the power plugs that stays on, that may cause it. Other than that If it keeps happening, take it to your kia dealer. Have a great day!

Thank you so much, unfortunately the problem was way complicated than electricity drain. I started having "Hummering" gear shifts, then after the car got inspected, the pump that supplies the transmission gears with oil needed replacement, it caused the major loss of electricity due to failure signals transmission to the Car computer. so i had to replace it, the hummering shifts reduced by 90%, now i have to replace the body valve or check the valves connected to it !

The 2018 Optima does not have the options you are showing. What Year Optima are you demonstrating that isn’t included in your video. Got a 2018 you have to take the door handle apart to get in the trunk if your keys were locked in there.

Well dang, I shoulda gotten me an Optima, the one "feature" I miss from my 2000 Honda Accord is the backseat middle passenger fold down cushion cup holders, my 2017 Forte doesn't have this, I've even been searching ebay and junkyards for possibly replacing my backseats with backseats with the fold down cup holders option, boy do I miss my cup holders in the back

The 2016 doesn’t have this latch either. About a year ago I locked my key fob in the trunk so I had my insurance come and unlock my driver side door which set off my alarm. What I wasn’t aware of was that setting off the alarm then put my car in an anti theft mode disabling the interior trunk release button. The dealership told me that without a spare key fob, the only other option was to pay roughly $100 to have an etched key made to manually open the trunk. Lucky me, it was a Sunday so the service shop that makes the key was closed. After hours of researching a solution to open the trunk from the interior, I ended up having to take a flat head screw driver, wedge it behind the rear driver seat, and luckily was able to manually release the seat latch that lowers the back seat. Once I got that I was able to crawl into the trunk from there and get my key. Taking away the interior emergency trunk release latch on the 2016 and newer models was super unnecessary and inconvenient!

Move it around. Maybe have someone push down on the trunk a little while you give it a try. That might help it release. Good luck!!

Make sure you give it a solid pull. But I have heard a couple people say it broke. I don't think the dead battery would cause it not to function.

Hi Ben, were you able to find an alternative solution for newer model Kia Optimas? My keys are locked in the trunk of a 2018 model and there is no emergency trunk release. A locksmith got in the car but no one (including the Kia dealership) has been able to get into the trunk. Any help is greatly appreciated as they say they may have to re-program the system which could take weeks and my laptop is locked in there!

I love my Kia but there are things like this that are so stupid it's hard to believe. Why would they make this so difficult? Along with the doors automatically relocking after being unlocked with the key fob. Before you can get to the car. The Forte you have to go through an airplane take off sequence in order to get the wipers to stay up so you can change them. Because they're under the edge of the hood.

@@BenLindseyKiaLove Yes. You'll need a flathead screwdriver, and a 10mm ratchet. There's a KZbin video hack showing how to get into the newer models by resetting the alarm using the driver side door and the tools. Very helpful video for newer Kia/Hyundai cars!

Yeah they discontinued that feature in 2015 on the Optima. I'm not sure why. I get calls all the time about it. I'm not in the car business anymore so I haven't had a chance to figure out another solution. Calling the dealer is probably the best option at this point. Also Kia and Hyundai have the roadside assistance phone number on the drivers window.

Yeah I don't know. Cost maybe. They never told us about it at the Kia dealership either. I just happened to run across it. If your Kia is still under factory warranty, it is covered under roadside assistance to open your car when you lock the keys in it. It would have to be 5 years or newer and less than 60,000 miles. If so, call the # on the drivers side window. Other wise it's locksmith time... good luck. Thank you for your comments.

Is it the same year Kia? You have to give that loop a good strong pull. If it doesn't work from there you may have to take it to service....
