Thank you for the kind words Cedarcam, but I ought to be half way decent running this thing for 18 years.... Most new tamper operators watch ties, it's a natural thing to do, but it's more important to watch your gauges. It is difficult to miss ties when they are skewed. The last operator they had here made lot's of firewood hitting ties.... :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

When I was raising track on the Huckleberry RR (3-ft gauge ), we had a spot board with a peep-sight and one to use at a jack that was flat for the raise. We had a Jackson Mono-rail tamper with 4 vibrators and heads for the tampers on a hydraulic ram that raised and lowered the heads. It tamped one rail at a time so it had to be raised and then turned around to tamp the other rail. We also had a generator with 4 manually held vibratory tampers. These manual tampers could be plugged into the Mono-rail tamper (2 at a time). The tamper had a hydraulic motor for travel but we pulled the clutch and used the motor car or 12-ton locomotive to pull it. Fun days (yeah).

Nice Roy, I did not know they made tampers for narrow gauge track. I bet that was a fun time you had back then. We had an old Fairmont before the 6700, go out and hand jack the rail. Hi Dave! Young railroader here with just over 2 years experience. I run a KBR-925 regulator for my railroad but i’ve been working with our new tamper operator (MKIV jupiter II). was wondering if your computer system is similar or the same. have some questions about plotting and editing curves. we just completed a 3750ft rebuild with steel ties 136RE rail and have been using trial and error to line a curve in this yard track
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 13 күн бұрын
How lucky are you to get to run a 925, that is one awesome machine, sure wish we had one Nate. Tamping steel ties you have to make sure the tamping tools center the tie. In some respects the old Windows operating system is similar, but the Jupiter 2 is a much better OS. When your building a curve, try to keep your positive and negative throws close to being equal. Best Fit on the plot is not always the best way, I hardly ever use Best Fit, I build my own curves. Your the eyes for that computer and you can look at a curve and see what needs to be done, then make your plot adjustments accordingly. Don't fret if it doesn't come out exactly right the first time, sometimes I have to make 2 or 3 passes to get the curve right. Better to throw only a little at a time than to throw a whole bunch at once. Easier on the spikes and ties that way too and you lessen your chances of breaking rails or joint bars. Good luck and if you need anything my email is peppypetsdaily@yahoo.com

Question about e-stop. How do y'all test e stops? During my time at Kawasaki rail car division, we'd run the subway upto 30mph to test the e stops. They were looking into a new way to test the e stops without running the cars. They tell us "buttons work, computers see the button pushed, but that's not to say something down the sequence isnt maintained and the whole system fails" Looking at all these buttons and switches, its amazing how simple wiring and basic forces can create whatever you want. Engineering is very interesting in every aspect of life. We should take more interest in it!
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 12 күн бұрын

@@lifeintornadoalley not really, dead mans switch on loco must be depressed all the time. If its not then you get a warning, if that warning is not acknowledged, then the switch shuts down all throttle functions and is supposed to automatically apply the brakes. It does not shut engine off like an E stop will. A loco does have several fuel cut off switches that will shut engine down tho

Nice video Dave - look complicated, lots of things to remember but muscle memory is the key to operating machinery. What did they use before 1994 when you received the 6700 tamper. Cheers and take care

Your right about that Pete, it takes some serious time in the machine to learn it. We had an old Fairmont tamper before with no computer in it, had to hand graph everything. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Good gravy Dave, that's a lot of switches, dials and buttons to master. I got lost half way though the video trying to keep up with you on what does what to whom. Really interesting about a radio transmission messing with the travel controller. I'm a ham radio operator and I had a neighbor tell me that he knew when I was transmitting because his lamps that go on/off by touching the lamp... would go and off. So I re-orientated my beam antenna and knocked down my transmitter power, to be a good neighbor and keep the peace.

Now that is quite interesting about the lamps going off and an on from a radio transmission Henry. You are right there is a lot of stuff to control on a tamper. Really appreciate your checking out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

From what you were saying about the hand held transmitter not effecting your system. I would guess that your onboard radio transmitter is grounded antenna system causing RF feed back through your controller and it’s also grounded to the chassis. But it’s above my pay grade. Bottom line is you’re all in control, no matter what. Ok give us a year of on the job training. You have years of experience and knowledge. Thumbs up 👍

Great explanation! But I still don't understand how the operator knows that the rail needs to be higher/left/right. Is there a laser guiding system? Or it's just lots of years experience? It is possible to lower the rail if needed? So many questions...
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 12 күн бұрын
Thank you Froop. If the left rail is low and needs jacked to be level with the right rail, then the left needle on my gauge will be low. And vice versa for the right rail. On the front mask follower there is a potentiometer which goes up and down with the rail deviations, that sends the electrical signal to the gauges on my panel board. Hope the explains better. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

So if the tamper lifts the track and pushes ballast under the ties, wouldn’t your track keep getting higher every time you tamp? Does it not lift the track in sections that are “on grade” but still tamp some ballast under the tie or just completely skip those sections? Thanks for the interesting videos!

Dave mentioned early in the presentation about the "lights"the machine has a projector at one end and a receiver at other they run on rollers on the head of the rail.In the middle above the track lifting unit is a board that cuts the beam of light when lifting .A lot more to it that goes on when he hits the cycle button but the beam of light provides the straight edge that it works to.Lining and lifting are the same system .My first experience with tampers as a young Apprentice was a overjacking caused by a broken wire in a receiver,tossed in the deep end experience
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 12 күн бұрын
Good question Jeff. The track would keep getting higher, but the weight of the train passing over it numerous times pushes the track back down. If we just kept raising track the loco operators would soon be issued flight jackets..... :-) Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
