Does auto pilot only work by directions from a captain? Or are some controled by satellites/gps? Thanks for your time.

Autopilot course is set by the navigator and can be changed accordingly to the situation. I am not aware of any controlled by GPS however I suggest further research because it may exist in more advance vessels.
