HOW WE DRIVE- Different methods of steering, navigating and maneuvering the Celebrity Edge, a 130,818 gross ton, 306 meter, $1.2 billion dollar new luxury liner.
When we’re underway and I walk around the ship and guest's see the Captain, the question I get asked ALL. THE. TIME is “If you’re here, who is driving the ship”.
The answer is the Officer of the Watch. We have a minimum of 3 very qualified and licensed officers manning the bridge at ALL times. 3 separate teams rotate every 4 hours on and 8 hours off. The teams are made up of an Officer of the Watch, Assistant Officer of the Watch and a Quartermaster or Lookout.
The terms steering, navigating, maneuvering or just to keep it in layman’s terms, “driving” is used.
There are several different methods we use to “drive”. In this video I'll explain each one!
* Disclaimer: Video contains pre-pandemic footage, where facemasks and social distancing were not common practice. Oh, how times have changed.

Brilliant explanation Captain! I am an experienced Master Mariner myself, and despite having been on and around the water for nearly 40 years, have never been able to explain all of these elements so succinctly! Love the program for giving the Junior Officers 'Hands On' experience, something that was never afforded to me while working my way up. And the Maneuvering Support Animal ! ! Fantastic, Well Done !

Kate, we cruised with you in March 2019 as we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I saw you a couple times on board engaged with your staff and wanted to take a picture with you. I didn't get the chance as I didn't want to be a disruption in your busy day. We enjoyed the cruise and Celebrity cruise line hospitality from your staff! Thanks!

@Dinesh Birendra First no good Captain runs merchant or other shipping alone. Aka good captain does he or she can her staff but especially his or her engineering and maintenance staff. While don't know cruise becoming like many modern airplanes completely fly by wire. But old days airplanes control surfaces connect control devices be petals or levers. But I would assume should modern control systems failure completely there either means maintaining use called station until tug etc could assist or until ships control devices are restored. As with new standard that all ocean cruise ships two independent means powering back to shore I have assume means independent control systems but miracle on Hudson there always first for every disaster. Though wish fellow Marriner ill will is not advised as planet has mind and means return the favor to sometimes many times over.

Captain McCue, you have my utmost respect and admiration. We sailed onboard the Edge during the last week of January 2020. Your ship and crew delivered a wonderful experience for us just before the world travel industry came face to face with Covid 19. My wife and I have been Celebrity Cruise guests many times over the last 23 years since our 25th anniversary cruise to Alaska. We hope to see you again very soon.

What a great video!! It's so excellent that you actively ensure that junior officers get their chance to maneuver the ship, since as you say, it's the most "fun" and absorbing and critical thing you so as senior ships staff. That's so excellent!! I look forward to watching more excellent vids about ships equipment and ops now also!! Thanks so much for this! Nicely Done!

Such a awesome video. I'm going to be going on a cruise for the first time in two weeks (Anthem of the Seas) and I love learning about the behind the scenes in whatever I'm a part of. I always wondered how in the world these massive ships get docked and seeing how the team does it all here is very impressive. I'm a pilot and people say what I do is difficult. You are a model to every one of professionalism and commitment. When I say everyone, I mean everyone. The skills you have honed over the years is daunting. I think we are quickly approaching the mark in time when gender shock can be released to stories in history books. Competency doesn't seek gender. Professionalism doesn't ask for anything other than knowledge, skills, and commitment cloaked in integrity. I look forward to someday catching a ride with you.

I worked on an RCCL ship (the Jewel) for 10 months as a musician. Most of the time we were under Cap't Thor, whom I'd suspect you know (but this was 15 years ago) What impressed me the most was the arrival at Georgetown, Bermuda. The ship arrived between two rock jetties, and the ship never wanted to have to reverse to leave the port. I suspect that is because there are serious $$ penalties to the cruise line for overstaying a scheduled departure. When it's time to scoot, they want to hit the gas and go. So the turnaround has to occur upon arrival, not the departure. So in between these 2 jetties, the ship executes a perfect 180 degree turnaround. (Jewel was also an azipod ship) There was one guy on the bow and another guy on the stern both with laser range finders, pointing them at the jetties. I'm telling you that ship (950 feet+/-) turned 180 degrees around with no more than 50 feet clearance fore and aft. That blew my mind. Is there a subroutine in the ship's nav computer such the ship will stand still and rotate in place, or was that maneuver all manual?
