How To Optimize Your Creative Process
How do you optimize your creative process? I work with mixed media collage and today I’m giving this art tutorial on how to use your sketchbook to optimize your learning and your growth as an artist. What will really optimize what you learn in one painting so that you can be sure to take it forward into your next creative project is to spend time contemplating what you’ve learned, how you identified problems, and how you solved them. This time spent is not wasted time, it’s truly optimized!
Here are a few of the things I spend time contemplating and documenting in a fun, creative way in my sketchbook:
What were the problems with the painting?
- Did I successfully identify a few of the issues that were keeping the painting out of balance?
- What were my attempted solutions and did they work?
What were my internal obstacles?
How did those thoughts/emotions affect my decisions?
What were my solutions to those internal obstacles?
What are my favorite elements in this painting?
- Color combos
- Composition elements
- Subject matter
- Happy accidents
- Textures
- Marks
What ideas does this painting spark? What seems possible that maybe didn’t before?
If I wanted to do this painting on a larger scale, how do I attempt that?
- How do I use papers on a larger scale?
- How will I re-create the loose brush marks on a larger scale?
- How do I scale up marks made with graphite, crayon or colored pencil?
Spending time answering these questions and actually making the notes takes your learning process further. The simple process of contemplating and answering the questions, and then the tactile process of writing them down, or making marks or gluing collage to notate materials that worked will create a deeper and richer context for creating the next time you work.

After watching this video, I took a ‘pause’ from the painting/collage process, gathered up photos of my recent art pieces, and started my own Project Review Notebook. I gave myself the gift of time for some thoughtful reflection and evaluation of each completed piece (using many of your suggested contemplative questions). It was an eye-opening experience. The process helped me shift my automatically self-critical or dismissive view of my art toward a (far more helpful) response of, “How will I use what I learned creating this piece to make me a better artist for the next piece?” Thank you for sharing this excellent artistic-development tool.

this was so helpful as i am wanting to explore and develop my own process. You explained the process in a simple and clear way that was so refreshing with out all the art terms but looking more into our emotional and responsive reaction to our own work. Thank you.

Like it or not, my learning style is varied and all over as well. It used to make no sense, and now that I work with mixed media, I understand a little better that the winding road was necessary for me. Own it, I say 😉. But it is nice to reflect on the work once in awhile-learning happens across the board, which is wonderful. Thanks for your comment!

This is one of the most important videos I have watched this year regarding how to think about your art and how to push yourself to the next level. I just happen to be struggling with that very problem right now and had no idea what to do next. Most art instructors are not teaching these topics. I’ve signed up for your series and am interested in your classes and workshop because I like the way you teach. I am also intrigued by your content. “Do You Rush the Creative Process” video just came up in my feed. Why yes, I do and will be watching that next. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I agree that internal process is talked about far too little considering what a huge player it is in the entire creative process and output. I’m so happy you’ve found it helpful-that makes me very happy. I talk about it from firsthand experience, and I think most of us have very similar obstacles and problems to find our way through. Thanks for watching and for your kind words 🥰

Thank you for this! I had reached a 'stuck point' where I didn't know what to do next. I now know that what i need to do is 'play' , experiment with materials, colours, tools etc and then examine what i've done. It's also help me 'gel' how I want to use a sketchbook journal. Do you make your own or buy them? Thank you again 👍👍

This is very interesting that you took a mostly intuitive art and for yourself made it cerebral. This is a type of discipline that works for some people and completely stymies others. I believe in an internal thinking practice in my work, but not quite like yours. Today I will not be making a book of process, but I will keep it in mind if I ever find myself in need of that kind of "process reflection". If this works for you and others, carry on to your best lives. ✌🏾🖌
@marabethquinart
@marabethquinart 9 ай бұрын
The only thing that works is what works, right? We all process so differently. What’s interesting is that making those notes about what happened in the painting and reflecting on that doesn’t feel super cerebral to me, even though technically it may be. It feels like just looking more closely at something or from a different angle. We each have our way, which is really so wonderful. 🥰

Thank you for sharing your reflection process. So inspiring as usual. Myself, I don’t know how to reflect on anything I do. I totally agree with you on the fact that things can happen once and never come back because we didn’t learn the process. Like just got the chance to do once and stopped at that point. I’m thinking how can I adapt reflection time to be part of my creative process. How to start?
@marabethquinart
@marabethquinart 9 ай бұрын
I know exactly how you feel, but just know that reflection is a learned skill like drawing or working with a certain medium. Learning to sit and contemplate how a painting feels, and then looking for reasons it might feel good or ‘off’ are how you practice. And if you don’t have a sense either way, then just thumb through a book of paintings and notice how some of them draw you in and others not so much. Little exercises like this will allow your ability to reflect to grow-it’s already there, you just need to create some access to it. Hope this helps!
