Thanks for this video. As a Mac user there are so many things about it that I find by trial and error. I remember using something like this a few years ago & never took the time to really learn how to use it. Because of you, I have re-installed it & use it every time I work on a new design. It would be really great if someone would incorporate this into Photoshop as a plugin, so you could organize the fonts you have in different categories, while using Photoshop. Maybe some "smarter-than-me" plugin maker will see this and do it! ;) Thanks for all you do!

I've never really looked at font book a part from when I install them initially but this is really useful to do! Definitely something I'll need to look at getting sorted as I know the ones I've downloaded live all over my folders so at least this keeps them all together in the one place and properly organised!

Wow. I've actually never thought about making my own folders in Font Book. I'm totally going to do that now. I always end up having to scroll through a million fonts to find the one I'm looking for. Although, when I design web projects I usually have my favorites synced from typekit anyway. But for other projects this will be super helpful!

+ItsJustJoeTV it was just through connections id made/people I knew that I got my first clients! And still to this day word of mouth or meeting people is how ive gotten all my freelance jobs. As for my first full time design job tho I just applied for one I saw advertised. I do use email but not very effectively at the moment!

I would advise you to save all your fonts in a folder within your document system after you install them so you can easily install them on new computers in the future. I’m not aware of a way to easily transport fonts and folders to a new machine unless you clone the old Mac when you set up a new one. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible tho! I just haven’t looked into it

Great idea! I should start doing that as well. What I do is I save my fonts into my external hard drive after I download them on to my computer. What do you do with those PDF or READ ME or Licence TEXT that they come with the fonts? Do you save them as well?

Kevin Plays Guitar this is probably bad but I usually delete the PDF/specimens of well known fonts and sometimes I just keep them in their respective folders on external hardrive. I personally don’t need them because I’m using the fonts for personal use and not commercially.

I can see the use of having them organized outside of the applications, but what I'd really like is consistent, robust, and customizable sorting options WITHIN the adobe products themselves. I noticed that the latest version of Illustrator does have some sorting options but I wish there were more options and that you could customize the tags or whatever it is that they use to sort out what sort of font a particular font is. Do you know of any 3rd party plugins that can do this sort of thing and actually make it easier to scroll through a narrower font "genre" within the Adobe apps, like InDesign in particular?

That would be cool!! Fontbook is just built in to Mac OS so there won’t be a version of exactly this for Windows, but just research font managers and see what other windows users might recommend!

Font Book is a font manager so it's a way of installing, viewing and organising fonts. you still have to select the font in the program unfortunately!

a lot. haha. It basically syncs all google fonts and Typekit fonts to your computer and automatically filters your fonts into categories such as serif, san-serif, slab, script, weight etc. Maybe you could make a video about it. Its definitely a tool alot designers would find useful.

Oh dear - I've so wanted to do this for years. But - I can't see how to install FONT BOOK on my Windows PC. I've been googling it, but no luck so far. It just asks me "Are you using a Windows ARM based device?" Anyone have any ideas? I have hundreds of fonts - but no option down the left hand side for organising them as shown in your video. HELP SOMEONE PLEASE!! I do have an Apple password and I Phone - but would like it on my desktop.

Matt Duncan there as far as I know, there is no such way to organize fonts within photoshop. You’d have to use a font organizer before hand and then find the fonts manually inside your design software.

A Windows alternative would be nexusfont - www.xiles.net/ It's basically the same as Font Book, it just has a bit more functionality - you can type out your text to see how it will look with each font, rather than looking at the default characters :)

Did you try it? Just type in the Font Preview in Font Book to see whatever you want. That text will then persist when you change fonts. Great for logo shortlists! Boost the font size and take quick screen snaps of the preview with the Font name. The regular print option only prints the standard alphabetic sample preview, not your sample text but is good for making a pdf sample book of your fonts.
