I appreciate you sharing your journey! It's encouraging to me as I've spent most of my career doing graphic design and I'm definitely ready to take on more responsibility and have more impact. I believe my next step is Creative Director as well.

this is way better than heat transfer vynil. if the design covers most of the front of the shirt it feels like you glued a thick contractor garbage bag to it. its an awful feeling. its cool you can just paint the ink on in case you have a really detailed multi color design and dont want 30 screens for one shirt.

I think it's a lot to put on yourself to essentially work 2 jobs. I'm not a CD level but with 2 children I don't have any bandwidth for any extra curriculars and try to use my small amount of free time to focus on things I like to do like quilting and reading. I also know I have a non-complete at my role so I'm not able to do any freelance work at this time that is related to my day job so that takes some stress off me as well. Essentially, I hope you have found a better balance for yourself.
@charlimarieTVАй бұрын
It's been a stressful year work-wise because we rebranded the company (and I led the project!) but even with that going on I do feel like I've had better balance. I've been spending a lot of time sewing which has brought me so much joy!

Burnout is so real. I was laid off in January and I've been so burned out I decided to take the year off. Job market is bad so perfect time to just relax and not stress about the grind. Savings are important af because tech burnout WILL happen sadly.

I believe the untold story here is that you were able to increase the income from your main day job, which allowed you to regain time and take more rest. In previous years, you may have had more streams of income, which resulted in more overall income; however, that was more time spent after your main day job, which took energy. Thank you for your transparency in sharing these types of videos.

I always love watching these each year and I know how vulnerable it can feel sharing when you feel like you’ve “failed” or haven’t met your goals. But honestly there is sooo much value here and so many insights for us fellow creators. We talk a lot about burnout but this really shows you in black and white the long term flow on effect of it! - Ellen
@EllenandTaraАй бұрын
Also I’ve really started to notice for some reason the internet has normalised year on year growth when that’s actually incredibly not normal for the majority of businesses and we shouldn’t be pressuring ourselves to see that!

I’ve basically taken 3 years off for my health and because of burnout. Only work part-time. Struggling to get my side biz going at a somewhat sustainable clip. So I completely feel this! Not having a good way to make money without me going on a shoot so it can function without is something Im struggling with to so super glad you’re talking about. Also, love the redesign so far of Kit! Fantastic job!

Taking time off for your health is important. In a world that focuses on ever increasing growth, if you can sit back and know that you're still satisfied with your progress, that's all that matters.
@charlimarieTVАй бұрын
definitely in a phase of mental health growth rather than income growth!

Do you think the creative director income caused lack of motivation or focus for other areas. You inspire me
@charlimarieTVАй бұрын
it wasn't lack of motivation or focus that caused me to stop working on other income streams, it was burnout! I still have tons of ideas for my business I want to act on, but I'm lacking energy to act on them right now. Luckily, my Creative Director income means I don't have to push past that to pay my bills 🙏

At the end of the day I think you made the right decision to take some time off. I did wonder though, is this number gross or net income?
@charlimarieTVАй бұрын
this is gross income. Since taxes are wildly different for different individuals in different countries, I find it's most useful to make these reports about what I earned, not what I took home.
@BobbzieeАй бұрын
It actually has been very refreshing to see you focus on important things rather than just all content creation things.

thanks! don't get me wrong, creating content is important for me too (I truly love putting useful things out into the world!) but I do think I'm finding a better balance these days

Fair play to you for sharing this - you don't get the full picture generally, so to hear that 'some years can be tough' is very valuable. Anyway, I think you did the right thing by sacrificing income to look after your health. Looking forward to seeing more videos when you're feeling stronger!
@charlimarieTVАй бұрын
thanks Martin! definitely tough to see in black and white what income I've sacrificed, but it was definitely the right choice to sacrifice that instead of my health

Super video. I am illustrating a book and the author noticed my handwriting on the notes for the illustrations ans asked me to actually hand write the title and some other elements within the book. I am also trying to learn ConvertKit to build an email list but I am having some trouble with the technology. It’s all me, though. Not the program. Any advice would be very welcome. 😊

Good job! Some people disliked all the fuss that was made about the rebranding. But the redesign itself is great in my opinion. The old UI and website felt a bit dated. And software UI is generally so bland. The new kit interface has personality.

Based on Sketch Updates in 2024 so far, If you have to choose again, which do you prefer ? Figma or Sketch ? I must switch from XD (due to xd bugs in development mode in shared link so developers cant inspect the element inside scrollable group) to wheter Figma or Sketch. I hate offline mode in Figma, but after watching your video about switching from Sketch to Figma, it make me think twice to choose Sketch. I give figma a try and theres plenty things that i dont used to it, feels more complex than XD. Please help me, would you mind to give me better advice or recommendation? Is figma worth the hype? And what about versioning in Figma vs Sketch in 2024?

I haven't honestly considered using Sketch for years because Figma is now the standard in my industry, so I don't know anything about the new updates sorry! Still very happy with Figma :)

Hi, I am a writer who has been working for some years now. I recently got employed by a company in the US around March this year(2024). However, I lost the job in July, because the CEO closed down the department. I have sent over 200 applications and none are positive. Also, I keep getting this work permit thing, even for companies that want to hire independent contractors. Is there any way around getting a work permit? Or anyone here who needs a writer?😢
