I stumbled upon this video. I’m also bald, same shape glasses, and a few thousand movies that I store in a 8x14 room. It was like listening to myself. The things that bother you, bother me. I collect every genre and sort mine by format. 4K>blu-ray>dvd. Then by genre. It’s more work than anyone would ever believe, but I love it. At times I buy faster than I watch, but I watch HEAVY. Been a collector since DVD came out. Mostly rented Betamax & VHS back in the day. Have loved movies since birth. They have saved my life countless times. I have an equally ridiculous music collection in another room (Records/CDs). Yes, my wire is understanding and she’s a great digger. Id say I buy about 80% new. The other 20% I pick up second hand and put those in new cases I buy in bulk. I subbed and I’ll check out your other vids when I get a chance. Kinda eerie, thought I was watching myself! I constantly rearrange everything to spice things up and to experiment with different layouts. I effectively consider and use my movie wall as a modular painting. We roll in a similar way. I have a shelf with all the boutiques organized by label. Obviously those are mostly horror and cult classics. Almost everything else is sorted by genre except a few specialty sections like the JCVD / Arnold Shelf. Currently there is a 4k section but I will rearrange next time to mox those with the rest. There are enough now where it's not as weird to mix them up.

I like this "modular oainting"! It's part of the fun of a library to me, tweaking and organizing to make it attractive and searchable.

Man I’ve played around with so many different ways to organize. I used to separate Blu-ray, 4K, and Steelbooks, but it became a pain in the butt remembering what format I have something on…plus it separated some franchises. I’ve not taken to mixing those. This is basically my breakdown… All standard studio release Blu-ray, 4K, and Steelbooks are in loose alphabetical. All boutique labels are in their own area grouped together. All DVD is together. Boxsets line different areas up top of shelves. Tv shows are separate with DVD and Blu-ray versions mixed together. I’ve tried genre and it’s too difficult for me. Too many movies jump genres and it just bugged me. Separating things like thriller and horror is so borderline. I do buy significantly more than I can watch, but I personally like having a huge collection of things to pick from because I don’t know what I’m feeling. I know I have stuff I’ll never get to, but I like the access of knowing WHEN and IF I want that certain movie I have it. Really interesting video.

So when you go to watch a movie do you know already what you want to watch or do you bin shop your library? If you bin shop do you go in with a genre in mind? I ask because if I go in feeling a comedy but not knowing which movie I want to see I like being able to go to that genre and pick. You don't find it daunting searching across the alphabetical order to look at your comedies? When I can't decide which genre to put a movie I just look at what genre it's listed as on imdb 😀.

@@otsmovies Most of the time I don’t go in with a specific genre. I’ll typically pick out like 5-10 that sounds like a good watch and my wife will help narrow to the one we watch. If I do go with with a genre in mind I go through the whole library just picking out movies in that genre that spark my interest in that given moment. I personally enjoy thumbing through the collection to seek out what we’ll watch.

@@timtalkstalkies interesting! I enjoy digging through the library too! I'm constantly reconsidering the order because I have found myself in a netflix situation where I've dug through the library for an hour and still haven't picked! For me it's just about trying to bin shop, but not spend to long doing it 😀😀.

People don't realize that they won't always be watching films by themselves. They need to organize their collection so guests, friends, lovers, wives, husbands, and their kids can find stuff. Genres are a must. I break up all my box sets and put them in individual cases. That way my guest can go right to the single film they want and pull it off the shelf. Oh and 100% of my collection is slipcovered, the ultimate aesthetic option.
