I even do my small batting this way, especially when I'm needing a stress relief, mindless sewing. Cleans my area and when I get a size big enough for an easy placemat I roll it up and restart the next pieces. You'd be surprised how fast this goes if your cutting mat is right next to your sewing machine. Most scraps already have a straight edge to start with so I sew all these together first before I start my double cutting. Once i have several placemat sized pieces, if I need larger, these can be squared to any size and put together and used. I use the back side of my mat and an eraser to clean. These placemat size works great to practice free motion quilting. Awesome video Karen, as usual. You are a joy to watch and learn from. TY

I saw a video where they made a dog and cat beds by sewing a one yard piece of fabric together and made what looked like a trash bag. You then take that "bag" and put it into your trash can for your sewing scraps. You can then put all of your fabric scrap cuts, thread and any small batting (cut into small pieces) that you may have left into that bag. When your bag gets full then you sew the one final seam to close in all of your scraps and the dog or cat has a new bed. These work great for your house, dog shelters or even vet offices

Perhaps you've learned this trick by now but I use a bit of stiff packing foam (the rougher stuff that comes packed around electronics sometimes) to clean cutting mats. I've made a little sewing kit based on the goody goody binding kit. the same principle could be adapted to lots of different sizes, depending on what you want. also, sleep masks! a good night's sleep is so important and an eye mask can really help. a scrap of black for the back is ideal but you can do anything you want on the front, you need some wide elastic too. very quick, makes a great gift or stocking stuffer! similarly, quilted pencil pouches/zipper pouches. tons of free tutorials online and they make great little practice pieces with a lot of impact for little effort.

Enjoyed this video of batting scraps. One of the things I have done for years and so have my quilt group done is to use both batting and fabric scrap to make a pet pillow. We have donated these to vets in the area but I also find pet lovers love them. I sew some scrap fabric together (about the size of a pillowcase) and hang it in my sewing room. As I sew I throw in all the scraps I get as I sew. When the bag is full I sew the bag together and donate somewhere. The vets I know like to use them in the cages when animals have had surgery. They are soft and comfy and they can be thrown away when soiled. They are also easy to wash. Hope this little tip helps other sewers.

Once you piece them together use the compression bags they sell for traveling. Label the outsides with the size in it. They will store that way in a collapsible mesh bin used for laundry, or on the shelf or in a plastic bin.

I so enjoy your lovely videos! I always saved batting pieces for my Mom. She loved to make pot holders and with her talent for embroidery she kept us all supplied with pot holders that you really didn't want to use and mess up.

I use small pieces of batting to wipe my brushes on while I'm cleaning my sewing machine. That way, the lint doesn't end up all over me or on my sewing table. 😊

Thank you! These tips are brilliant. I'd be interested in a pillow video, as well as one on how you make postcards.

If you have leftover polyester batting, it's great for a neck roll. I measure the width of the pillow and cut strips the width and as long as the polyester strips can go. Roll the strips adding each strip to the previous one until you get the diameter you want. You can wash the pillow and it will not lump up like it does if you just use polyester fiber. The tighter the rolling, the harder the pillow.

Great ideas for using up batting. I give the small pieces to our quilt shop. A person there makes pillows for the animal shelter, and she uses the small batting and fabric scraps to stuff the pillows. Also, I tape the pieces together with batting tape. You cut the pieces as you showed in the video, then butt the pieces together, put the tape down and iron it. I find this easier to do than sewing them together. When I sew them, they never slay flat. Also, really appreciate the tip that the batting has a wrong side and a right side. I never knew that. Thanks for all the great information and the very concise way you explain it.

In my area, a few years ago, it used to be popular to dye cotton batting scraps various colors and then using them as a substitute for felted wool in appliques.

I never throw away batting scraps. I do a lot of quilted bags and the scraps are perfect for that.

Absolutely LOVE your ideas!!! Especially the batting “pasta” to use up scraps as random stuffing. Taught to never throw away what I might be able to use later - now I’ve got a response when my daughter complains when I keep the random little pieces! LOL. Thanks.

What an excellent video. I have just been showered with batting scraps from a bag on an upper shelf in my craft room cupboard. I was going to throw them out but now I will be busy sorting and sewing. Thanks!

I use long thin strips for padding for covered coat hangers when making them. Simply secure at one end of wooden hanger with a couple of stitches and then continue wrapping around till you join then next one on with a couple of stitches also. This works just as well for fabric covers or knitted or crocheted covers as well.

In the past I have cut those tiny little skinny strips about 2. -3 inches long and sprinkle them over the backyard lawn in early spring at bird nesting time. Fun to watch the robins dive in for several mouthfuls! Support life on the planet!

I make quilt as you go hexagons for mug mats, table runners, Christmas swags, needle cases, even a heritage hexie bed runner from pieces of lace, buttons, embroidered hankies, small doilies crochet edging by my grandmother. These go down to a 4 inch square before cutting to shape.

Ok, I've been quilting more than 20 years and never knew there was a "right" side to batting!
@JustGetitDoneQuilts5 жыл бұрын
Other than show quilters I'm not sure how many people can tell the difference once it's finished. I think the important point is that they are all lying the same way
@JDWHITE-it1ci5 жыл бұрын
Me neither, and what does lying the same way mean? Thankyou
@hobbsbatting25015 жыл бұрын
Not all batting has a 'right' or wrong side - Hobbs batting is the same on both sides (except for our Heirloom Natural with Scrim, which only has the scrim on one side - even then it's up to you whether the scrim goes up or down!). Steph
@AutumnK22 күн бұрын
@JDWHITE-it1ci I know you asked this question a long time ago, but nobody answered it, so I will. She just means that if you piece the batting scraps together that they are all either right side up or wrong side up, but not mixed.

I haven't checked all the comments but in case no one has mentioned this - take the longer waste strips that are at least 2.5" wide and cut them all to that width. Sew them together end to end. Then you have a replacement for the 25 yard long roll of 2.5" batting (for a lot less money!) that can be used with jelly roll strips in making rugs, placemats, etc. Just keep in mind what Karen said - keep like types together. Thank you Karen for all the batting ideas.

YES, please make a video for making pillows with batting scraps. I really enjoy all your videos. You're so knowledgeable about quilting, and share that knowledge so clearly and thoroughly. I am subscribed to a variety of channels, but yours is the only one I ALWAYS want to see the next video of. I hope things have calmed down in your life, and you're feeling better as the year has passed. Much appreciation and love from Missouri, USA.

Love all your common sense ideas and explanations. Another thing I do with batting scraps is to cut them into squares that I use in making rag quilts. I cut them an inch smaller than the size of squares I use for the quilts- eg. 4 inches for 5 inch cotton squares. Then when I am ready to assemble the quilt I just take a stack of the batting squares and sew. 😊

We only have one kind of batting and call the off cuts Frankenfluff. Every few quilts I sew the off cuts together and make the batting for our next dark coloured quilt. I got a roll of batting last fall on sale, so we are ready for all the projects we have planned.
