I find binding all subjects in one single book for each quarter works well for my family. My girls like having a single book for all their subjects. They also like having a simple visual of how far along we are through the school year. After they finish 1st quarter they can easily see that they are 1/4 of the way through the school year. I bind at home with a simple comb binding machine.

Lol your first tip is one I was just thinking about! I was watching another KZbin who said she gave each day’s work in a binder and i was sitting here thinking “no give the entire week so they can decide what and how much they want to do each day” If they want to do all of one subject one day and a variety the next, let them. Also had the same thought about taking apart workbooks lol. Love the way you have organized your stuff! Thank you for sharing this with others!

You have me so excited about getting organized!! My oldest is 4.5 and we're just embarking on this crazy journey. I'm also really interested in that handwriting curriculum you mentioned. Just a thought about the folders coming in 100s...if for example you're using the left sided red tabs for one child, take the right sided red tabs and turn them "inside out" - you've just doubled the number you can get from one box! :) Obviously for your poor middle tab child, you're stuck.

🎉I know a lot of people put the entire week of all subjects into one week- but then the child would have to figure out out to separate the daily papers between subjects- as they’re all mashed together. I like the idea of separating out daily work with all daily subjects into the weekly file by days into folders. Or at least- separating the subjects in folders into a weekly file- then the child knows to pick one paper from each folder of the week daily.

I heard someone say Kristi Clover method when I mentioned how I set up our weeks in the file system like your crate system and I use a binder by subject that we fill with our current week. And then here you are popping up in my youtube. Love this! I tried it for our first year and made it complicated in my head and dropped it. I went back to it and adjusted this year, it’s been fabulous. Great minds think alike and so happy there are others doing this same system with success. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this info. I am curious, how you get to keep homeschooling your older children in terms teenage social skills? My older children are refusing to be home schooled because they want to be with their friends, they say they can't stand being at home with me all day? 😕 they want their friends.

I know this is late...but based on the "toddler" comment, my advice will still work. Just focus on having fun with your little one. Don't try to do any formal "homeschooling" with him until he's officially at school age...and even then, keep it fun. I have a book called Homeschool Basics (on Amazon) that goes into getting started and I discuss my technique I call "sneaky school" that I used with my younger kids.

Has any one tried this? I saw this video a few years ago and my A type brain loved it. But I have never tried it. This year we are 4 kids in school and all using pdfs so I feel I could do it this way. But what do we do with it afterwards? After the week is done? Put it back in the box? Put each subject in a subject binder? How would I organize it to keep it or store it after the year is done. I would be interested to know if Kristi herself still uses this system. Could you do an update video on this please?

I love that you circled back. I ended up creating a Homeschool Organization Course and have had more than 1,400 families go through it. Some people just watch this and do my crate system as described here. But that's all to say, yes, families have used these methods for years now. :) Hope it blesses your family! It really helps with larger families.

Wow this is very overwhelming and intimidating to me. I do have a question about ripping the pages out of the workbook. Would you not save them for your younger children and just make copies of the individual pages out of the workbook? Do you not do that because of copyright reasons or maybe it’s more cost effective just to buy a new workbook instead of making multiple copies for younger children?

if you use the pro clip binding system, you can simply print new pages and add them in. need to look into the hanging file system. what we used last year, and haven't this year, is I made a check list for my daughter of all the subjects, I put a dot on the subjects I planned to cover, and put an x when I actually finished them. helped me see if I was planning more than we could handle, and I could fit a few weeks on one page.

I am using a very reasonably priced homeschool website that has everything you need. The money you have to spend after that will be science experiment resources, which they give you a link to, and printer paper and ink. I only print in black and white. The website is home schoolhouseteachers.com last year I spent $600 on books; this year I spent $170 for this system. Right now they are having a sale that's $40 less and for a second year.

Thanks for this help! I came across it at the beginning of this school year (2016-17) and it has been SO helpful. I have used your check list idea. I modified some of the rest of it. We've got the hanging file folders by week like you suggested. And inside the hanging files the color coded files by kid. Then I color code subject with different color paper clips and leave incomplete work in the hanging files. At the end of the week we move each kid's work into their binder. I separate work in the binder by subject with color coded tabs to match the paper clips. It's been a huge help for our organization this year! Thanks again.

Hello fellow Californian homeschooler! You are definitely more organized with your lessons than me! You are on it! We do a lot of unit studies so I tend to group things together that way. As a matter of fact I will be posting a homeschool room tour soon and showing off my lazy system of "organizing."

+It's A Mom Blog I love it!! Everyone has their own style! You have to do what works best for you and your family. I get everything organized -- then we see if we can realistically get to it all. Some times we just skip things that aren't working. I think that is the biggest lesson I've learned -- it's okay to not finish everything! :) My public school teachers always tell me that they don't finish all their books either. :)

I love your checklist, that's fantastic! :) I, like you, have in the past become very overwhelmed with planners and trying to keep up with everything weekly/daily. I usually write it all out on my white board so I don't feel to "committed" lol This is great! Thank you for sharing your many wonderful tips! Blessings!
