really good jumping off point for organization. I have a few bins of bulk that I would like to eventually get around to. My one tip for organizing a collection is being honest as you sort and if there are pieces that you don’t think you’ll ever use- like friends colors or big molded baseplates- just sell/trade them off instead of trying to build your solution to accommodate.

Great video! And I really appreciate your acknowledgement of different perspectives/use cases. If you build lots of MOCs or sort a ton of Lego bricks or simply want to have bricks available when you need them, there's different things to take into account - many of which can affect your pocketbook and your own sanity! ;) I'll add a few of my thoughts here: - Akro Mills drawer organizers used to cost $25-28 only in 2021, but doubled in price at the end of the pandemic. Sometimes they were on sale for $20, even, but the current $50 price tag can be hard to justify. - A huge part about organizing is determined by how you build (which I'm thankful you touched on). If you MOC build, more often than not you want multiple parts of the same color (think rock work). So sometimes starting sorting by color family sometimes is the most useful over sorting down to the element. There's always a happy-medium. - Lastly, the time you spend sorting needs to be accounted for in one's approach. Sorting by color (families) is easiest and causes less strain, but sorting by element - while satisfying - has been known to cause insanity (not 100% certain, but pretty sure). So find that balance that works for you. Sorting by color families and then large element families (plates/bricks/tiles/slopes/wedges/etc) is the game plan I've stuck with since I build so many various things. Thanks again for keeping the endless Lego organizing and sorting discussion going!

I’m a bit of a guy who works sort of like the guys from Lego masters. I just love the feel of digging through a bin looking for *just* the right part. So for efficiency’s sake I just sort by usage. For example I’m mainly a bionicle/hero factory guy. So, bones, limbs, gears, tubing, heads, masks, weapons, feet, hands wings and tails all get their own bin. The little stuff like axles and pins get more thoroughly sorted because no one like looking for your last blue pin or red 2x axle at the bottom of a bin.

For "bulk" stuff...I sort by a blend of part-type and color. Like, all the 2x2+ bricks of a certain color, all the 2x2+ plates of a certain color, and so on. And the same for the 1x2+ bricks and plates, and the 4x4+ and so on. That way, anything that's commonly foundational that I'm likely to need a lot of, is all together by color for the most part, but its not a wildly mixed pile I'll never find specific pieces in. They're all pretty easily discernible. For specialty pieces, annoyingly tiny pieces, and things I'm not likely to need much of...but that can really be a real pain to dig through, I sort entirely by part type.

Now that I came out of my dark age 6 years ago, I have been dealing with this sorting and organizing problem. Let me tell you, you are spot on with this video. I would like to add a few things I figured out over the last several years. Ask yourself a few questions: Do I have a permanent build area, or do I need my collection more portable? How large is my collection, and do I plan on adding to it over time? How do I build? Sets vs. Mocs What do I like to build? What you like to build is very important and will help you focus on how far to break down your inventory. If you enjoy Technic....then you will want to sort it out so you can find parts quickly and spend more time building and less time digging for parts. My personal preference is to set up a drawer system for the small parts you use most. I have mine right on my build table. The larger drawers work great for larger bricks, which I sort by size. 1x1 1x2...up to 1x6 and so on....2x2 2x3 2x4....the larger sizes get combined in to their drawer. I use Store House bins from Harbor Freight to organize my Technic collection because I don't use them as often, and I can take the inner trays out to my build area as needed. I mainly sort my parts by function/ size and not color unless I have an abundance of a certain color. Overflow parts get bagged in zip loc bags and stored in to the clear plastic shoe bins with lids. There is no "right way" to organize your collection. The main thing is to find what works for you, so you can enjoy your time building !

I was really looking forward to the video. Thanks for sharing your thought process on sorting. In my case I lack a dedicated space for my parts collection and use zip bags for part types, which are then packed in groups into larger bags. The storage itself takes place in a good old cardboard 😅 not pretty, but at least it's already quite easy to search for specific parts when searching parts for an existing set or moc I want to build for myself. Since I lack the space, I have no idea how this suits for a true moc. I design my own stuff in studio, which saves me a lot of space 😅

Your sorting method is really good, I unfortunately don't have space/money for so many small drawers. I sort by category in cheap plastic boxes, so Plates 1 x ... , Plates 2 x .... or Tiles 1 x ... . If I have parts very often, then I put them in my small drawer sorting system. Since I like to build MOCs, I also have IKEA sorting boxes, which all have a theme, so I have a beach box with plates of all sizes in tan or a forest box with plates in green and leaves, green slopes and flowers. This is far from the best variant, but actually works quite well and is just very cheap.

Great video! I'd have to agree with most of what is discussed here, the main factor to consider are truly how many parts you got and what do you build the most. For the type of building i'm into, precise sorting is where it's at as i mostly have to pick specific parts from a list. So i for the most part sort accordingly to BrickLink categories, it's what makes the most sense for custom set building. I'll send you a DM of a bin system my buddy sent me that i think is the ultimate...!

I wish I had a good answer for this, but really its just a question as to whether or not a set has good pieces that I think I could use in other builds.
