Spider mites on brugs are easily cured by just rinsing the leaves. If you regularly rinse leaves, especially the undersides, when you water, then you will not have spider mite problems. No poisons necessary. Also on cuttings, they root great in just soil like any other plant. In fact water rooting is a much slower process that gives you a weaker plant. Love your greenhouse!!

SBK is an organic plant invigorator with a surfactant base so doesn’t have nasty chemicals, basically the bugs are suffocated a bit like a washing up liquid spray for aphids.. But saying this, I too try and rinse off bugs in the first instance anyway

Thanks Kris perfect timing, excellent informative video as always, temperatures dropping here in NE England next week so I was looking for advice on how to overwinter my first Brugmansia plant, looks like I’ll have plenty of material to attempt some cuttings. I was lucky enough to be given a potted cutting in April and it’s grown to around 6 feet and produced flowers after the Y division formed, is it better to take cuttings from shoots after the Y division does this increase the chance of the new plants producing flowers ?

Hi there Chris, lovely info. Just subscribed. Probably stupid question. Could I put it in an attick with minimal light? I have a huge attack but the place I wanna put them lack windows.

@ushik2942 yes as long as frost free and not too warm it should be fine. Just watch out for mould/ fungus if its quite humid

I potted up a brugmansia this summer for the first time. It grew like mad, with lots of foliage and flowers. The flowers started to fade and wither at the beginning of autumn but in the last few weeks I've lost count of the flowers that have been appearing. I'm wondering if its the wet but mild weather? PS: Even in full flower during the summer, I didn't notice any perfume from them which I thought strange as that is apparently their most attractive feature..🤔

They have several flushes of flowers throughout the year. Super plants. Unfortunately some forms have no scent at all which is a shame

@@YorkshireKRIS Thanks Kris. Mine's are a creamy white flower but it was just sold as a brugmansia with no other details. Still a beautiful plant though! 🙂

They only smell at night and if there is moisture. If you live in a very dry climate, they don't have much scent.

Brug lover Have you ever root pruned a potted brugmansia Not one that has been allowed to grow its roots out the drainage hole, but one that was cut back and overwinter indoors under lights? I have two and I was thinking about prying one out of its pot, shaving an inch or so off the outer roots, and reporting it with fresh soil. Do you think it will tolerate this?

I do this every spring, just as its showing regrowth I wash off all old soil, trim roots and repot into fresh compost with pellet fertiliser.

Thanks for the great information, I bought mine last year but it didn't flower again this year. Any advice?
@YorkshireKRIS

I generally find they flower 2 to 3 times a year although this one has had flowers or buds all the time. They flower more often in pots in my experience.
@ericjolley4318

They will only flower after the main stem has forked, if you take any cuttings after the fork they will flower on this new wood you don't have to wait for them to grow to the height the plant needs to grow to fork. I have found if you take the cuttings now as Chris says grow them through the winter you will get earlier flowers saves waiting for the old plants to come out of dormancy.

Why do you put your brugmansias into dormancy? (@ 7:30 'ish.) Why not keep them awake with their leaves on? Did I miss something? I'm a man trying to multi-task.
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 2 жыл бұрын
You can do either but dormant plants grow back well and less bugs to deal with

I have my Brugmansia in a very large pot right outside my sun room. It's too large to bring in, but other tender plants have survived out there. Do you think it would be OK to cover it with fleece and bubble wrap in situ?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they can often survive like this and resprout from the base or woody stems HOWEVER its not always a mild winter and would benefit from being frost free if possible

@@YorkshireKRIS Thank you, I have Nasturtiums that haven't stopped growing or flowering for the past 5 years, and Geraniums that are still flowering for the past 16 months which is when I planted them. We haven't seen snow or frost for the same amount of time. To be honest, the Nasturtiums have become a nuisance, although they're very pretty, they're smothering some of the other plants. I'm loth to get rid of them, because the butterflies love to lay their eggs on them. Anyway, I think maybe I stand a good chance of my Brugmansia surviving... Hopefully.

@@richardwatts6361 The climate you describe sounds especially suited for the cool-growing Brugmansias, like B. sanguinea., the red angel's trumpet. Do a quick search here on KZbin for how to grow brugmansia sanguinea for a great video of someone growing big trees of them outdoors with thousands of blooms in your kind of climate
