@@CaliKim29 can we grow peppers inside though? I put some tomato and pepper seeds in plastic bags, they sprouted and I potted them. It’s starting to get colder now and I live in Mobile AL. Where do I find that light bulb you have? I have so many questions

I never thought about uprooting it! I usually just cut them back and leave them in the pots. But this is a good idea!!!!
@CaliKim2924 күн бұрын
Absolutely, Stephanie! Planting them in pots is a smart move, especially if the weather takes a turn. It makes it so much easier to bring them inside or to a sheltered spot when temperatures drop. Just be sure to give them some ambient light and keep the soil just moist! You’ve got this!

Overwintering my 6 jalapenos, 6 bell peppers and 12 tomatoes this year for my first attempt. Have 160 sqft of raised beds in Zone 6b (WA). Transferred the peppers to the garage which never gets below 45 and the tomatoes to a basement utility room which is in the low 60s over winter. Each group will have a grow light for a few hours each day though the tomatoes will be a few feet away from the light in the otherwise dark basement room.
@CaliKim2924 күн бұрын
Hey Troy! Your setup sounds like a solid plan for keeping those peppers and tomatoes happy through winter-love seeing someone take on overwintering! 🌶️ With your peppers at 45°F and tomatoes in a cozy 60°F, you've got the right idea. Just keep an eye on the tomatoes; they may reach for that light if it’s a bit far. You might notice some leaf stretch, so bringing them a tad closer could help them stay compact and strong through the cold months. Happy overwintering, and thanks for watching! I have some kind of a pepper plant that I that’s two years old. It’s very tall. It’s like about 3 foot at least tall and my raised bed. It’s putting on many many peppers right now. There are red, hot pepper, skinny kind of peppers only about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long and so far I hardly ever get them to get ripe on the vine. I have to take them off green and wait until they get a I take them off and dry them wait until they read and then I dry them in the house, but I’m wondering if it being two years old already and it’s very tall. I still overwinter it. I’m in Phoenix Arizona area so we are very dry and so far we only had two rain this whole summer which only lasted about 20 to 30 minutes in my particular area which is kind of a donut hole not really expecting a lot of rain this year for the winter, so unless things turn opposite what I go ahead and prune it the same way only because it’s taller go a little higher cause it’s the bottom of it is woody and about probably a foot up so I’m thinking if I trimmed it there if anybody has any ideas on this, I really would appreciate it. Sorry I, long message my ADHD thinking thank you

Fantastic to have all those peppers! Some plants take really well to overwintering, sounds like a great plan ! Since it's worked so well for you in past years, I wouldn't change a thing! Nice job! -CK

If it doesn't get too cold in the winter where you live, I think you can just leave it in the raised bed. I had a hot pepper plant that lived for several years in the ground.

I'm over wintering 8 pepper plants this year. I'm in zone 9b and we do get freezing nights. I have an outdoor homemade greenhouse that I will cover with 6mil plastic on the open parts. Do you still recommend bringing them inside during the ready cold months?
@CaliKim2915 күн бұрын
Since you’re in zone 9b with occasional freezing nights, bringing the pepper plants indoors during the coldest months would be ideal for extra protection. While your greenhouse and 6mil plastic provide a good shield, unheated greenhouses can still drop to damaging temperatures on particularly cold nights. If moving all eight plants indoors isn’t practical, you could try adding a small, safe heat source in the greenhouse, like a greenhouse heater or heating mat, to keep temperatures just above freezing. Another option is to use an additional frost cloth or row cover over the plants inside the greenhouse, providing extra insulation during the coldest periods. These adjustments can help you overwinter the peppers without needing to move them. If you found this info and my videos helpful, would you consider subscribing and following along? LMK how this goes, Sarah - CaliKim

What kind of flowers were by that pepper? We have a small space around our patio, and I always plant flowers that get to big, lol. Need a tidier, colorful flower to fit in there. I loved how easily the pepper came out of your awesome soil. I failed miserably twice to overwinter pepper plants indoors, I think it was because I put them in the basement without enough light. Going to give it another go this winter with two favorite peppers Corno de Toro and Golden California Wonder. Hopefully I get a jump start on peppers next year. Enjoy your videos, Stay Well!!!!

Hi Brian! Those are profusion zinnias-the ultimate edge flower! They’re so tidy, colorful, and heat-tolerant, perfect for drawing in the bees and staying vibrant all summer. I totally get the struggle with trying to find compact flowers for a small patio bed; these zinnias might be just what you’re looking for! Corno di Toro and Golden California Wonder are also 2 of my favs and fantastic pepper picks for overwintering. Keeping them near a good light source this time should make all the difference (I’ve definitely learned the hard way, too!). Fingers crossed for that early pepper jump start next spring! Glad. you enjoy our videos, thanks for watching and subscribing if you haven’t already! CK

I am going to try to overwinter my pepper plant this year. This is the 2nd viewing of this video. I attempted to find the take down spray but the stores in western PA no longer carry it in the winter. It is November and unseasonably warm for this time of year. My pepper plants are still producing. I wanted to wait until these are done to overwinter them. I was checking your links to see if you sold the take down spray but I did not see it. Any thoughts of where to purchase it in the winter besides Amazon? I wanted to try and buy it locally. Thank you.

I have a couple of Datil peppers plants that grew a long single stem (like 30" long) before branching at the top only. Would I prune it 6" above where it branched? Or would I cut the single long stem down to above the second leaf node?
@CaliKim2924 күн бұрын
Hey there! For winter pruning, I like to trim down to the second leaf node. This helps manage the plant’s size and protects it from the cold since the upper stem is likely to die off anyway. In the summer, though, you can cut just above where it branches. This encourages a bushier growth, making the plant sturdy instead of tall and lanky. A bushier plant can better support the fruit and withstand wind. Each method has its perks depending on the season, so it’s great to adapt your approach and experiment with different plants and methods to see what works best for you! CK
@linusstick24 күн бұрын
I’ve heard mixed feeling about taking all the growth off so I did a few like you did and trimmed one back and left smaller branches and leaves on which will die off any way
@CaliKim2924 күн бұрын
That's a great approach for experimenting! It's fun to see how different techniques work. Enjoy your early peppers next spring!

My pepper plants have some yellowing on their leaves. Is that normal for this time of year?
@CaliKim2924 күн бұрын
Hi Lily - yes, it’s pretty normal this time of year. As the temperatures drop, plants can show signs of stress, leading to some yellowing. To perk them up, a quick boost of fish fertilizer can provide the extra nitrogen they need and keep your watering consistent! A little leaf drop is totally expected as the season shifts. Hope this helps! CK

Ahhhhh I'm catching this right after I just watched the Doyers win the series! 🎉 (from an A's fan I'm happy since the Giants fans are upset😅). I have done this with several pepper plants successfully. My Rocoto peppers are from the Andes & acclimated to colder climates. They will actually turn into a woody perennial (tree. The seeds are hard black (rare for pepper). They must be practically fermented to germinate. 🌶🫑

Another couple of channels said to keep the plant in the dark and not to water, now I am concerned.
@CaliKim2924 күн бұрын
I haven't found it necessary to keep them totally in the dark. In my experience, they do need some water, moist not waterlogged, so the roots don't completely dry out and die. Many ways to get to the same end - don't be afraid to experiment, make adjustments as you grow for based on your specific growing conditions and how you're plants are doing. Let me know how it goes!
