How To Overboard a Ceiling | Without Removing the Light

Want a nice, simple way to plasterboard over an old ceiling.

One tip for finding the joists without making a mess, is to use a neodymium magnet and run it over the ceiling, it will stick to the nailheads, mark them up then connect the dots 😀

That will save you banging holes in the artex that’s most probably containing ASBESTOS 😅

I'm a domestic sparky who's stumbled across the channel, and I have massive respect for the effort being made here! I genuinely wish every plasterer could follow all the advice being given here, as I'd be more than happy to 2nd fix this! :) I'd also like to back up the importance of switching off the light circuit at the consumer unit (AKA "the board"). Some of the cables and terminals of these old ceiling roses are often STILL LIVE, even if you've flicked the switch in the room. Trust me: it's better to be safe than sorry. Hell, after seeing how that roofing screw was used, I'd be whipping out the voltage tester one more time to be sure! Frankly, I think every trader should have one, because you'd be blown away (no pun intended) by how dodgy some DIY jobs are. Again, On the Trowel, thank you for putting yourself out there to inspire and teach others! :)

Another good video, wouldnt worry about your quality of editing them.This format is straight from the hip, real world grass roots,and understandable. I sometimes find my joists/studs by using a strong magnet. I'm sure you and many others are aware this works too.

Kirk. Don't wory about editing the video's, I for one realy like video's which are un edited and show mistakes happening, it's a part of life every trades person should be aware of. I would much rather see the mistake and then see how you go about rectifying it. This would then add to any trades persons mental tool box, and even give them some more ideas which they would have never thought of. As a spark I know that we sometimes curse the plasterer, but in reality I'm learning a lot from you.

I've mentioned this in another video but I would avoid plaster boarding a ceiling, The do eventually come away from the ceiling. You end up in a whack a mole situation of trying to re-screw it back on and redoing the plaster only to find it starts coming away from another part of the ceiling later on. I would recommend any other method regardless of how hard it is.

It’s the small tips and tricks that help us learn more mate,, there are 100s of videos out there telling you how to skim etc. but I think your the first one to say about pushing on the heel of the trowel so the toe doesn’t leave a line. It’s bits like that that help us diy plasters improve. The rough and ready vids make it more fun to watch too 👍

I’m an inches man but I work with so many people who don’t use it so I’ve made a hybrid unit. I measure to the quarter centimetre 😂. Who the eff needs to cut board to the millimetre, 2.5 of them will be close enough.

Good one this, when I went from commercial to domestic, overboarding was always one I looked for advice on, I now do same as you, smash a hole, find centre of joist and snap a chalk line. In regards to editing, I think your channel is doing well because it’s not as polished as others, you’re showing the whole process which people want to see. Some other ones will show you putting the first hawk full on, then next minute the whole wall is covered, meaning people haven’t seen the proper process, despite how many words are spoken in between. Doing well mate keep it up.

Sometimes use a long nail to find joists not as much mess Same principle then chalk line but also done holes like you did , great vids by the way👍👍👍👍

Easyest way to do the light mate is to cut the board where the wire is and then notch the next one around the cable then ya not left with a big square mate btw from a plaster to a plasterer I live your vids

I don't like the thought of working with anything that may contain asbestos.(could be bad for your lungs)...so I would always go outside and smoke a few cigarettes whilst any ceilings were being taken down etc.👍

I really like your videos I'm in the USA very easy to follow your directions on your work the only issue for me is when you mix your stucco mud for the scratch coat the type of cement you use is it a Masonry cement or is it a Portland cement? I've been a mason all of my life and since watching a few others videos no one ever specifically says. People always mention the word Cement..

Hey mate, over here all of the cement we use us portland cement and when it comes to internal plaster it's nearly always gypsum plaster

when i had to do this to all the upstairs ceilings in my house I got in the loft and drilled a small hole in the ceiling each side of the joist tight to it at both ends, so I could see it from below as I was on my own, lucky I did it this way as the joists werent the same distance apart and some are thicker than others and are not exactly parallel - the things they got away with these 1920's houses lol

I have a wimpey nofines house which has a concrete slab type cieling with concrete joists running across. The slab can be pictured as floorboards between regular joists. A company wanted to do insulation and said they would screw extra thick plasterboard into the celing. ie the plasterboard at the moment is about half a hand span away from the concrete. It looks like they must have dabbed it on. With the heavy plasterboard how would you even insure it sticks? Ie mold ...moisture...etc I've heard some say leave it and others say you can screw extra thick insulation board which had moisture layer side into concrete.. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

I have the same ceilings down stairs with a dip of 20mm in some areas but not all plus a crack of 2mm running from one end of the wall to the other from the start of the extension all predated 2000, can I over board or does the whole ceiling needs to come off and replaced with new plasterboards..

I can only answer if you promise to work in inches 🤣 Chris it all depends on what you want to put over the top mate. If you wanted it to be 100% then get a needle gun and take the paint off. Failing that I would look at painting it with rendaid and then fixing EML to the wall with screws and washers. You could chance it with rendaid and some ewi base coat because that stuff sticks like shit to a blanket. It's designed to stick to polystyrene so it really is good stuff. There's loads of variables involved mate and for me to give you the best advice it would be good if I knew what you wanted to render it with and what the paint looks like. I was thinking just sand and cement, doesn't need to look 100% as it may be knocked down and a full width extension built in the future, just want it to look acceptable for a couple of years. Kirk question my respected friend. I have like a sunroom at home and I noted that in one of your other videos you had dot and dabbed plasterboard over the painted brickwork. As that’s going to be long for me as I don’t have the vehicle, money what not, can I just put sbr on the painted wall and go in direct with multi finish plaster?

One of my first jobs about 10 years ago, overboarded a ceiling and some bastard had notched the bottom of a joist for a mains water pipe. Screwed straight into it and I was so green I took the screw out! Stop cock was hidden behind a drawer and the customer was out. The water was coming out of the soffits like a waterfall.

Hi Kirk, your videos are great! I would like your help please. I've stripped the old wallpaper and the wall is with old white paint that is peeling off and full of blisters. In case that you have walls with wallpaper. Please advice what is the best way to prepare the wall for plastering ? SBR, Zinsser Bin? Should I wash off the old glue and remove this white paint somehow? I always have issues with that, as the final plaster starts blistering as well after a month. Do you know a technique to plaster the wall without strip out the wallpaper? Thanks a lot mate!

I have a question matey I'm in a debate with customer over boarding there bathroom I'm saying because they are having the hole lot tiled they don't need to use moisture resistant boards if the tiles are sealed properly am I rite in saying this? As this is the way I was shown

12.5mm mate. 9.5mm can sag if the ceiling joists are far apart and I don't think you'll notice the 3mm difference when it's all done

🫡 yes boss. The reason I’m overboarding is because I done 1 coat of multi finish in the artex without realising there’s lathe plastering underneath. Schoolboy error. House is 1870s Victorian. Would you say it’s best to overboard or would you just add another coat and leave it. ( ceiling is pretty sound )

Why the plasterboard screw ? I've been using clout nails for 30 years and never had a problem. There's always a problem when I need to take down plaster board that's been screwed up.

You did not need to overboard, just put a bonding coat on first, I have done it loads of times.

This is a messy old game this plastering. I find the joists the same way time is money. Like the way it cuts away to you in your den (still kids us men) to explain there could be something lurking inside the artex you would think it's common sense but say no more good video again mate I should be working your costing me money ha ha
