2024 update for anyone interested. I have my gigabyte 5700 xt gaming OC running at 2000mhz @ 1085mv and 1900mhz vram. This is stable for me but right on the limit, you may be able to achieve similar results but you're just going to have to play around with it, the silicone lottery seems to be in my favor here, your results may vary dramatically. My next step is to repaste the gpu and replace the thermal pads because even with the undervolt it is BARELY under thermal throttle temps. So my hope is that if I can get the temps down I might increase the voltage a bit and go for a higher clock speed. But at that point I'm starting to prioritize performance over saving electricity, lol. But regardless it will still be undervolted, just not as much as it theoretically could be. Hope this helps someone.
@Haorelian Жыл бұрын
It might have been 3 years since this video came out, but I wanted to add my opinion about it. In my experimenting, the sweet spot for this card is around 1900MHz@1000mV, only losing around 1-3 fps depending on the game. However, power consumption, in my experience, drops from the range of 225-250W to 130-160W. That's a huge power saving with only a 1-3 fps loss. Additionally, temperatures go from 85 degrees Celsius at the edge and 100 degrees Celsius at the junction, down to 63 degrees Celsius at the edge and 87 degrees Celsius at the junction.

@@SpaceGames95 Nope, no green screen or artifacting. The undervolt just made it a lot cooler overall, even sitting idle. I just upgraded to a 6800xt and the same type of undervolt does good things for it. Since the cooling on the 6800xt is so much better my CPU temps have gone down by ~3° C.

Thank you so much for your help! I've been a bit skeptical about the metrics surrounding my Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary and it was indeed overvolted. Lowering the voltage to what you said and ramping up the VRAM to 1800 did wonders for me! Really easy to understand your explanations and very useful. A tip for anyone else watching and having issues with temperature: I've noticed that even though I set my GPU fan on manual and didn't tweak any of the values (max speed was 46%), my current GPU temp would go to around 80 degrees Celsius and the junction temp up to around 90 (which is completely normal), but that my fan speed would be around 1300 RPM or even lower at that temperature, which was not corresponding to the values written in the fan settings (35% fan speed for 81 degrees Celsius). To fix that, I just clicked Advanced Options and replaced the 35% to 40%, then back to 35% - the fans are now working properly. Now, under heavy load, I have an average of around 1700-1800 RPM on my GPU fan and I get a stable 65 degrees Celsius on my current temperature, with around 70 junction temp, and the power usage is lower overall, too.

Did some extensive testing on my 5700XT reference and found lowest 100% stable frequency\voltage: 1600@850mv 1700@900mv 1800@950mv 1900@1000mv 2000@1060mv 2050@1100mv Somewhere between 1900 and 2000 the voltage requirements increases more than the MHz gained and there is not a linear relation anymore. For me 1900@1000mv gave me about same perf as stock, but 25% lower consumption. 1600@850mv gives about 88-90% of stock performance, but powerdraw drops 50% :)

What did you do with ram clock at 1800@950?
@chucksanders71314 жыл бұрын
This is true if you have stock cooling. You can under-volt the card, but you also need to increase the power that the card can consume. There are soft power play tables out there. Before I put a water cooler on my GPU, I was getting stable around 2090mhz to 2130mhz depending on the benchmark or game. 1187mV setting around 2150 in the radeon software with the power limit set at 60% Temps would hit around 96c on the Junction. Now if you have water cooling you can go much much farther. These cards love to be cold. I have not liquid metaled my card, but I am getting around 2180Mhz to 2202Mhz in games and benchmarks at 1225 mV with Junction temps in the 80s c range. I also have a 480mm rad with a custom loop, so there is that. I get 10450 in Timespy with a 3950x which I am very happy with. Also, with memory, I wouldn't overclock it unless you are running into a bottleneck. IE, you increase the GPU speed, but your FPS doesn't increase. Your memory might be holding you back. I would increase 5 to 10 mhz at a time till you get more FPS, and when you stop getting more, stop increasing the memory speed. The reason is. these little beasts need to be teased with cooling and power to get the most out of them. Memory also consumes more power when you OC, and so it will add to the total amount of heat generated by the GPU. Just cranking the memory to 1900mhz will not yield you as much benefit, as stepping up gradually the clocks and the memory speeds. At least thats how I spent a corona virus Saturday doing. Next corona Saturday, liquid metaling the GPU and CPU to see how much cooler I can get them, to only turn around and heat them back up again with higher clocks :P

I first replicated your settings: Boost clock: 2000Mhz Voltage: 1105 (1.105V) Memory: 1840 It is currently warm in Australia coming into summer, my core TEMP was getting around 84 Celcius. I noticed in TimeSpy 3D Mark, the average Core Clock was not making it over 1800Mhz. This really effected the 3D Score. I lowered the voltage again, and also upped the default fan curve a little. My new settings are now: Boost clock: 2000Mhz Voltage: 1000 (1V) Memory: 1840 This made a world of difference, my CORE TEMP was now around 80-1 deg celcius and my average Core Clock was now around 1900Mhz+ giving me an extra 300+ extra graphics points when benchmarking in TimeSpy. @@trentenstanley4864 obviously..... higher clock speeds = more performance. . but you usually need more voltage to get higher clock speeds . for an EXAMPLE.... not a hard fact 100mhz of clock speed will increase the temps by 5c but if you need 0.1 more volts to get that 100mhz this will increase temps by 15c (5c from the higher clock..... 10c from the higher voltage) . point is.... voltage will increase temps (and power draw) MUCH MUCH more than clock speed . but ya you increase clock speeds.... play a game if it doesnt crash or bug out increase clock speeds . eventually it will crash or bug out if temps and noise are still ok for you add more voltage . this added voltage should stabilize the clock (aka, no more crashes or bugs) . so you add more clock speed till it crashes then add more voltage . repeat this process repeat this process repeat this process . eventually you will hit a "wall" where to get more clock speed..... you need a HUGE voltage increase . at this point.... its better to back off the clock speed a bit.... this allows you to run less voltage (aka, less heat....therefor less noise due to lower fan speeds) .
@kainhall4 жыл бұрын
@@trentenstanley4864 a more simple answer..... . gpu tuning increase FPS in games..... higher clock speed = higher FPS but it also requires more voltage..... aka more heat....aka, more noise . and how you tune it is moving the sliders and graphs around like he did in this video. if you dont know how to read basic graphs.... like shown in the video (or in AMDs software) then you should probably not overclock.... and re-take 8th grade math lol . the graph shows voltage in the up and down direction and clock speed in the left and right direction . the best is having a "dot" the farthest to the right with the least amount of up . if it crashes / bugs out add more up (aka, more voltage)

Really awesome tutorial! I followed all your steps and it worked great. However, I'm still confused about why you would increase the power limit if you are undervolting the GPU. Shouldn't you just keep the powerlimit at default, and lower the voltage until you experience instability?

Way too high vram from 5700xt. Every 5700xt ive seen starts losing stability big time around 1820-1830 while some cant go higher then 1805-1810. These cards get bigger performance numbers from overclocking the GPU anyways. In general 2100mhz @ 1150mv, vram at 1802, and mess with power level because power level on some cards being too high will actually cause crashes. Start at +35%. Most(if not all) 5700xt come with a 195w power limit, so 195x1.35=263.25w, that should be PLENTY of headroom for this card unless you are flashing the bios with custom settings for an extreme OC, but at that point they sound like jet engines with a proper fan curve and push the thermals to the limit. Also, fan curve needs tweaked from stock but it comes down to personal preference on noise vs thermals. The junction temp on this card is safe up to 115c, but I wouldnt reccomend letting it run near that for extended periods. I like to run my fan curve pretty agressive when gaming since I have a very noise cancelling headset. I have other profiles made with less aggressive fan curves for when im using the gpu for other things like video rendering and dont want to hear the noise.

Yes and no, 1840MHz will be fine for most cards, some others need to be reduced to 1830-1820MHz, but that is usual, all cards are different

I've got massive temperature drop on my phantom gaming oc, from 80/85c to 60/65c while playing Warzone and i did notice 3 FPS drop, thanks for the video mate!
I custom built a case using 6x120mm fans blowing air across the motherboard. To cool the CPU I used a twin tower 140mm Phanteks cooler. For every 10% increase in case fan speed I reduced the CPU temp by 1 degree. This allowed me to run an AMD FX 8120 at stable 4.8 Ghz which was supposedly only possible on liquid cooling. My AMD 7970 GHz also overclocked beyond what most thought possible. With a little tweaking I ended up with a very decent overclocked system that was nearly silent. What this showed me was the importance of case cooling and directed airflow. The reason I am not a big fan of AIO water cooling is if you mount it at the front of your case you are pushing hot air past your graphics card. If you top mount your radiator the airflow from your front fans gets sucked out of the top of your case and never reaches your graphics card. The more airflow your case fans push past your CPU and GPU allows for lower CPU and GPU fan speeds and thus less noise. Your case airflow is the most important thing if you want to get the most out of your hardware whilst maintaining acceptable noise levels.
