What you can do to prelong the life cycle of your gpu is to leave apply to startup off at all times and save your settings in a profile once you find the stable amount you can get from a increase.That way you can apply the overclock whenever you need it and turn it off when your done.

Thanks, this was exactly the video I was looking for, I have used msi afterburner before for getting best performance for mining crypto currency, but have never used it for overclocking for gaming/rendering. This was really useful step by step guide, especially glad you included the BMW blender benchmark as I plan on overclocking to render with blender. I was a little disappointed that there was not a huge increase, but even a couple of seconds is worth it. Especially when you have multiple frames to render as those seconds add up. Currently only have one gpu installed in my computer, but have several other similar cards left over from my mining days. Might as well put them all to good use too ;).

x Morees x you should run a benchmark though. Only because it's stable doesn't mean it will run faster. On my 1080 the sweet spot is +150 on the core, even though it runs stable +250.

So it seems that GPU overclocking is governed real-time by whatever OC software we are using and that raises two questions for me: - Is there a way to burn-in the overclock into the firmware achieved with the overclocking software, so the software itself is not required to be running (or do it any other way than a desktop application)? - Does a factory overclocked card use its boosted values as if they were default, meaning it runs overclocked without the corresponding software?

Hard to say because usually it still lasts longer than you want to use it, so its outdated before its lifespan is up.

Really whatever is stable, you wont damage your GPU pushing it a little too far. I would start with 100mhz+ on the core, and see if you can go further from there.

I'm confused. I have a single GTX 1060, not overclocked, running on Linux, and on Heaven, Ultra settings, at 1080, I get 86.1FPS and a score of 3604, which is not materially different from your GTX 1080, so why on earth would I shell out the extra for a GTX 1080? EDIt: I lied - I wasn't at Ultra, but re-testing, I'm still at 70 FPS and 2896. Still not enough for me to shell out an extra £300 for.

It always makes me laugh when people say that overlocking offers you free performance. Technically, yes it is free to overlock the card, but the extra power consumption is going to raise your power bill and the capacity of your cooler is going to need to be higher or if your cooler is decent, crank the fan speed a bit higher to keep the temperature under control.

Up to you, 275 mhz sounds like a pretty good overclock, but if your not having any issues yet, cant hurt to see if you can go further.

i am late but he did say you need to know your gpu's power and as he said some company's don't want to overclock cpu's cause they don't know what is your power of gpu or cpu or even ram memory so don't force only cpu you need to have balance on your pc

Good guide at OC your video card but i personly think that you should have warned everyone that increasing the CORE VOLTAGE CAN decrease the life of the video card, the same way that adding extra voltage to your CPU can decrease the lifespan of that, ok it may not be a lot but it does which is a fact.

Rz 2000 Short answer: You need a GPU that is not built into the motherboard/CPU. Longer answer: A GPU is a unit which processes graphics. They come in different forms though, there is something called integrated graphics. Where the GPU is built right into the motherboard or CPU this is what you don't want if you want to overclock using this program. Furthermore, you can also buy a GPU which is not built into the motherboard/CPU which would instead be connected through a PCI Express slot. Apparently you can only overclock your GPU using this program if you have a seperate GPU.

Guys I seriously need some help here. I followed this tutorial exactly using MSI Afterburner, with my Aorus 1080 ti's (I have two in SLi), everything was working fine, even put it up to 300Mhz with no problem and temps were around 36 c because I have them in a custom water loop, but then I noticed it did not raise the overclock anymore at this speed, so I left the benchmark program (vally benchmark) and dropped it down to 200Mhz. Well my system froze when I did this, and I had to power it down because it would not do a soft reset. NOW my system will not boot up. I can press the power button and the motherboard code numbers show up, ram sticks light up, and the rgb lights on my gpu come on and flash, but the motherboard (Aorus gaming 7 x399) itself doesn't light up with it's RGBs and will not boot? Please help. I've tried reseting the CMOS, I tried pressing the reset switch before that on the motherboard, nothing is working. The card couldn't be friend considering the temps I had and that it ran fine at 300Mhz. Again please help, it will be greatly appreciated if anyone can!

You said its on a custom water cooled loop? I would try pulling one card and booting off one to see if that works if possible. (might be a pain if on water loop though.) Doesn't really sound like a GPU issue though, sounds like maybe a power issue? Like the motherboard isn't getting enough power, or an issue with ram etc.

Yeah that should be fine, seems like if you've reset the bios/cmos etc. The next step would be to try just one GPU and get to the bottom of this.

This benchmarking program (Valley) is pretty bad actually... I managed to overclock 120+ on Core and 300+ Memory, on a 1070 that was already overclocked from the store. Ran fine with the tool several times with no issues. Then when I tried to play Overwatch, the game just crashed until I dropped the Core down to 100+. So seems like it doesn't test as well as other programs.
