I'm in zone 5b and grow many of the David Austin roses. I don't dead head my roses after end of September. They go into their own dormancy when they are ready. I don't give them any protection either. I don't plant any tree roses because they are not hardy. My roses are defoliated through winter. Bonny

One question. Where you have plant box edging in encircling one of your roses( can't recall which), won't they take too much nutrients/water from the rose roots as they get bigger?

It can be tough to move to a different zone. Your roses, especially if they are not cold hardy, would need to be moved into sheltered location. I will address this topic in my next videos.

Hi Olga, thnks for your advice. I live in zone 6A in Massachusetts, should I put the burlap around my roses this weekend? I already have a round wire around them but still didn't put the burlap...

If you are having cold spells with temps falling below freezing, then go ahead and do the protection. Your roses are in full dormant stage.

Hi Olga. I an in Zone 6b. I have several roses in pots that I will not be able to get in ground, including a one year old climber. The pots are plastic. Can I house them in my unheated dark garage or some other way? If so, what additional prep would they need? Should I wrap the pots? Should I wait until they are defoliated before moving them into shelter? Obviously I have a lot of questions. Do you have a video that specifically addresses this? Thanks, love your channel!

Hi Grace, I do have a video on how to overwinter roses in the garage. And this season, someone gave me a young rose, it is growing on my back porch in the pot, there is no space to put it in the ground. I don't even know the name of it, but it looks very disease resistant. Well, I am going to overwinter it in my garage, so I will be showing the process later this season. Here is the video-kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYS4mJdug8-ceas. There are 3 videos all together. Happy gardening!

@@LisaEvans-k5w please check what zone is your rose hardy to. Most roses will love the mild winter and plenty of sunshine in summer in your zone. You and your rose are very lucky, your rose will be fine outside without any worries or protection. However, having said that, take into consideration any wacky swings of temperatures, like the arctic blast that that effected several states a year or two ago. In such case “house” the rose in the garage for the duration of such weather. No garage, no problem, cover it with a frost blanket or any blanket, it’ll provide the protection it needs. I hope that helps.

@@LisaEvans-k5wpoets wife is good in zone 5-10.. usually a potted plant should be hardy for two zones colder then you are to live overwinter in a pot.. so you should be good to leave it in a pot.. but it would not be a bad idea to give the pot some extra insulation and make sure it won’t break if it’s terracotta

Olga just to confirm, did you say beginning in August either slow down or stop watering our roses? If I have a baby climbing rose should I ignore this? I am also zone 6b/7a. Thank you for such an informative explanation!
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 10 ай бұрын
Well, if you have a baby rose, it would need a closer attention during the first year, so maybe not on such a strict watering schedule as mature roses, but still a bit less. Give that rose a hint, it is time to prepare for winter, not invest into new and lush growth.

I am new to roses! When you say to stop deadheading, does that also mean the rose hips? Should they be left on during the winter? Thank you for your helpful information!
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
Yes, some roses develop very colorful hips and those are additional decoration for winter month in the garden. Leave them on. Mine are eaten by squirrels and never make it through the winter.

Hello dear Olga .i have a question to clarify. This is totaly out of the topic according to your recent video . I have a rose sucker i believe .which has grown ABOVE THE GRAFTS UNION . One long stem has grown from the wild rose plant which we use to grafts the good rose .it has grown from the center of the wild rose stem NOT FROM THE ROOT BALL . normally rose sucker comes from the root ball , but this is above the the root and mid of the stem . Should u cut it off or leave it. Please advice me .. sorry for the long txt . Thank you .have a good day
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
Hm, whatever grows above the graft union will be the "good" rose. Anything coming from under the bud union will be roots trying to take over. Maybe your rose has semi climbing character and at the end of summer produces these long canes? And this cane is one of them? Anyway you can wait till next year and see what blooms that cane will produce. And if it is rootstock, you can take it down that second. Hope it helps.
