In "Aces High" the first notch of flap can be dropped at speeds below 400 MPH. The flaps can be dropped while making a break turn to tighten the turn. (A lot)

I use first notch of flaps for slower speed doghigths to turn tighter and not to stall as well I use gun convergence at 500 meters, good to hit targets at mid-longer range area.

Can't the gyro gunsight be used as a slip indicator? It should go slightly to the left/right if the plane is not flying perfectly straight.

Useful sheriff thank you. A point of contention 250m is to close, historical harmonized guns were 1100 ft. (335~m) .50s still have plenty of power here and even a bit beyond. I fly the pony on both DCS and il2, so I've most used the gyro sight. I will openly admit if you do not train to use this sight it is basically worthless however if you train on it there are several instances where opponents think they have escaped and they are easy kills.

@@SheriffsSimShack I'm sorry I must not have worded it correctly, I feel 250 is too close a convergence for .50 I trained on the DCS pony for so long (you cant change convergence in that sim) and Chris here is correct I prefer 340m. I say 250m is to close because you are selling your guns short by almost 100m that's quite a bit. I have always found 340 range to be acceptable, and as noted above further than many people think you have the range for. The above is especially true if you've train on the gunsight, a straight flying target that is a bit far away is easy to down. Cheers guys!

Yes, the gyro sight doubles as an slip indicator sort of I imagine, but it's got a delay due to its primary function

Thanks Sheriff. Does your comparison with the A8 consider it at full power with boost enabled? I really like flying the A8 but didn't realise it is this outclassed!

Yes, the A-8 can get to 580kph on the deck with boost full power and everything. The 100 Oct mustang goes like 610 on the deck with the right settings. And right on the deck is the closest the A-8 gets to the mustang, it only gets worse the higher you go

That having been said; still best to climb if you do enjoy flying the A8. Once you get it going down hill; there is still a lot you can do with it. With gravity as your engine you can take advantage of it exceptional high-speed maneuverability, and devastating firepower.

Is IL-2 ever going to get the D13 Dora or TA152?

Highly unlikely, IMHO. Of both planes, only several dozens were build, so IL-2 lacks will most likely lack any actual data to base the modelling on. Next, there really is no D13. Of the few build, there were at least three engine variants of the 213 used, as well as several fuselage and instrument variations. AFAIK, before production of the D13 would have started, efforts were already shifted towards the Ta 152. Last, the Ta 152 was available in two versions, the C-1/C-3 and the H-1. The H-1 was a high altitude interceptor, a role which practically never happens in IL-2. The C-1 would be very nice (and on my wish list), but because of the serious lack of any real data, I doubt IL-2 will make one. I think, there are no more German fighter planes, that could be modelled in IL-2 realistically. However, the italian G.55 or G.56 might be viable additions to the game - if there is sufficient data on them.

VirtualInfinity thanks for that. Flight data would be hard to come by, or impossible, but a good real plane to base a D13 off of exists in Everett, WA but is never flown because it’s the only one in the world known to still exist. What about a 109 K14 addition?

The way they model the .50 Cal is absurd. It must use the same impact characteristics as they cannon because in real life the .50 Cal damages from the inside as is goes through system tumbling back out. While a cannon does damage from the outside in. The game models the .50 cal very badly. No BF109 is going to take 500 rounds of 50 cal like they do regularly in this game. It would be shreds. In this game they just fly away.

Certainly not on par with a cannon because why then switch to cannons after the war, but yes it should be more devastating.

The capabilities of the P51D in this sim sound nothing like the actual P51D capabilities. These planes were able to fly at 40 + thousand feet. Were not to be agile very maneuverable great climb rate. The German ace would go on to say the Mustang was the worst plane to go up against. It was a fast highly maneuverable great climb and hard to see or Identify. Allied wwII aces would talk about how it could outperform in a turn fight almost anything in the air at that time in history. This sim seem like the P51 is only okay at mid to low height and fast in a straight line only, with a weak climb rate and weak maneuverability.

If you came to that conclusion, you clearly haven't listened then. Also the P-51 is a "good" maneuvering and climbing aircraft. But the late war 109s are very light in comparision and have still very powerful engine. Of course planes were in reality (and are in the sim) catchend in a climb by the Mustang and 109s were outturned. Because fights are not won or lost on drawing board. The Mustang is better in every regard past 30000 feet, but thats not where the fights are happening in the sim.

The saving grace of the mustang in combat was its speed. You had P-51Cs flying at over 430mph in 1942, the 109 and 190 only approached these speeds in late 1944. The Mustang could always just extend away and retreat if the battle wasn't on its terms. They were on the offensive and had the faster aircraft after all.
