Today we take a look at the La-5. Cockpit, taxiing, take off, landing, engine management and much more.
Note: July 2018: The Supercharger switch got corrected. Additionally the La-5 profits now from boost higher up. Switch alititude is like the manual states at ~3500m.

Thanks for making this, I've been having good results with the La-5 but watching this I realized I've been managing the engine completely wrong. Videos like these are useful I think even for more experienced players as optimal engine settings aren't easy to figure out on your own. I'd love to see videos in this series for the P40 and P39 as I'm sure I could learn a lot about their engines too. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Sheriff - looking forward to Part 2. One thing to note - default elevator trim for Russian planes tends to be heavily "-", nose heavy. For me this has worked OK for the Sturmovik, and fighters fully loaded with fuel, bombs & rockets ("Jabo" style). Otherwise - not so much. Default trims on yaw and roll tend to be fairly ballpark OK. Voice crying in the wilderness - wish somebody would cover the Sturmovik. Air to mud - boring and dangerous, but it wins games. That being said, the things I like about it are easy to fly and hard to break, so tutorials are not as necessary. Otherwise: Strafing. How to hit stuff on the ground without smacking trees, ground, buildings etc. with your plane.

About the engine mixture, 100% is auto rich, so it is really the best setting for combat at high altitudes as well, as it adjusts automatically with altitude, you should lower it if you want to save fuel.

If you leave the throttle at 10-15 % while landing and keep it at 10-15% while braking, you will find the La-5 is much easier to land. Reduced bouncing, and less rudder input required!

I'm keeping an eye on this series on the La-5. I just can't make it work! I'm so glad you're finally tackling this plane. Interesting as it is, for some reason I get more out of a P-40 than an La-5. Something is really wrong with me if that's the case! Finger's crossed for your next video, Sheriff!

Yeah I dunno, I'm just not used to managing the La-5's energy. I noticed in your intro you're able to really retain and trade off energy consistently. I generally end up losing most of my momentum and go stale energy-wise. It's like a pilot's trap for the La-5. Very hard to recover and not much I can do when I go defensive on that state.

Height of supercharger switching depends on current speed. While climbing the speed is smaller so then you need to switch earlier. I usaly checking mainfold pressure. If it is below 790 mm i switch stage to second.
@SheriffsSimShack
@SheriffsSimShack 6 жыл бұрын
The manifold pressure is not a good indicator. Since the supercharger needs below a certain alt more energy than the grown manifold pressure provides
@IBViRUS
@IBViRUS 6 жыл бұрын
it is good for switching from 1st stage to 2nd (you can prove or correct this value by trottling engine below switching height and making full thrust on 2nd stage. From 2nd to 1st espeshaly from dive flight you should switch stages earlier, but it means that you have a lot of speed anyway.
@IBViRUS
@IBViRUS 6 жыл бұрын
and btw in winter you need to switch stages at more higher altitudes than on other seasons and diffrent weathers. So cheking mainfold pressure is better method that knowing altitude value.
@SheriffsSimShack
@SheriffsSimShack 6 жыл бұрын
I tested it and it proofed to be wrong. A higher manifold pressure doesn't result in higher performance necessarily.

“The Soviets have plenty of good ground attackers, so I would never use the La 5 for ground attack.” Clearly, the people in charge of the VVS in campaign don’t agree, they think its a great idea to send 6 La 5’s deep into enemy territory, flying at 380 km/h at 1000 m, to bomb artillery emplacements. (But mostly get slaughtered by Bf109’s)

Hello, sorry if this has been asked but I looked everywhere and can't get an answer! I'm trying to taxi and takeoff but the aircraft simply refuses to being moving until ridiculous throttle is applied, it's like there is a parking brake being applied but I have checked my controls and there seems to be none on the aircraft. In your video, you just seem to be able to go 20% thottle and begin moving fine, but it's like I'm stuck in the mud until about 90% throttle, and even then, I don't have enough speed or rpm to turn the aircraft using the brakes and rudder.

There is no tutorial about oil, water, coolant temperature neither about fuel mixture it is very unfrotunate and I have thousands of hours in simulators (though civil airliners). Did not expect it will be so hard to fly in this game without engine failure.
