Great video! This is just how I treat any abscesses. A vet told me about making a patch with the duck tape on the wall several years ago and it really is a great easy way to do it. I always pass that tip on. I even taught it to my farrier!
@isabelmilenkovic440810 жыл бұрын
This has come in so handy for me in the past 5 months! My horse has had 2 abscessed which one we packed with poultice and unfortunetly come out the top! So this time were getting it cut out then putting the snow pads in! :) ( those will be there until he needs to be re-shod )
@isabelmilenkovic440810 жыл бұрын
I used this method for the few times his been lame not for the abscesses!

Ouch! Hope he got better!
@LaurenEades201111 жыл бұрын
I did this exact same thing for my horse when he had an absess and it worked wonders in just a day! Just make sure you, your vet, or farrier pin point and drain the absess first. But my vet drained it then wrapped it, then the next day I took the wrap off and soaked it in epsom salt and he was 100% better. Not lame one bit! I did wait 3 days before I started riding him again but he felt a lot better! I also did a couple of CC's of Bute.

Thank you always appreciate tips, we find it easier to put the epsom salt/iodine into the diaper then putting the diaper on you can work the paste into the hoof and around the frog, figure 8 the vet wrap, and same technique for the duct tape with quick wrap around to under the cornet band to tidy up. All the best...

A lot of the times it will "draw" out whatever is in there. If it is an abcess that is causing the soreness then the epsom salt will draw the infection out. If it is sore due to a stone bruise or something else the linament helps to ease the pain as well and draw out the soreness. Hope this helps to answer your question. : )

I would love to see a video on how to get your horse to be a more "forward" mover. I feel like I am having to beat my horse all the time to jump. He is really lazy. I have to either have spurs on or a crop with me at all times. Is there a way to get him to be more forward and willing? Thank you so much! Love your show and advice! So helpful and yall are such a joy to watch! : D

I love these times and your show! Great to show to clients as well. I was wondering if you and Stephanie could do a video on how to properly secure hair with current helmets. I've got far too many riders who try to put their hair in their helmet, which I've told them constantly it will affect the fit of their helmet. I, myself, have waist long thick hair. It fits into my T2 helmet, but not my Charles Owen Hampton. I've explained to my riders the various ways to wear hair safely, but figured Jimmie and Stephanie could perhaps show this on youtube? They both have long hair and I've seen them both wear it differently (Steph seems to keep her hair in a bun, Jimmie looks as if it fits in her helmet). Either way, I think many riders need to have this stressed for proper fit of their helmets. Thanks for a great series!!

Wrapping a hoof keeps it from getting infected, or bruised after it has been hurt. If the horse hurts it's hoof, wrapping it keeps the hoof from getting even more hurt from its surroundings

If the horse has an abscess or is lame and you're waiting for the vet to come out, packing the hoof is the best thing to do to ensure your horse is comfortable until then.

Does this work for abbesses to and couldn't you put a closed hoof boot on instead of duct tape to seal it
@elizabethcrass70037 жыл бұрын
Nina Lewis for an abscess you'd want epsom salts, yes, but more importantly some sort of dressing to keep it clean. I prefer Icthamol as its what I'm familiar with and know to work well, but others use only Betadine and epsom salts. As far as a boot goes- its less effective then a wrap. Duct tape isn't foolproof by any means, but as far as being in a stall goes it helps a lot. Some people will use a Cavallo boot over the duct tape, which covers the entire bottom of the hoof, the toe and heel. I simply prefer just the wrap itself though.

What does packing a hoof do for a horse?
@torielamm37458 жыл бұрын
What if a horse gets cut open on their jaw. How would you wrap that?
@hallerentz45888 жыл бұрын
Call the vet if it is deep, if there is heat or swelling. If it's nothing major, I wouldn't wrap their jaw. I use a diluted betadine solution in a spray bottle to spray down the wound, then cold hose for 5-10 minutes. Betadine will prevent any infection, and cold hosing will reduce swelling and clean and dirt or debris from the wound. Usually the body is a pretty good healer without much help from us :)
