You’re a life saver, thanks! Going to need a big foam pad for my B17.

Glad you found it. This method has worked out great for me. I've shipped a 1/48 B-17 and 1/48 AC-130 this way and it does require a big foam pad. Fortunately Hobby Lobby sells 'em. Good luck with your Fortress.

Best method Ive seen. I used to throw any models away before I moved to other location, and promised to build them again. Ive build the Monogram B17G five times already, and now Im ready to move again....( joking ) This is a good solid and safe way to keep those priceless creations with you..Thanks!

I have a similar technique that uses less foam, but the idea of shock isolation is the way to go. Those folks who used packing peanuts must love to replace itty bitty bits! Instead of the one-use zip tie, I use pipe cleaners. Great video! About time someone with a technical background addressed this subject.
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chuck. Pipe cleaners are likely a bit better. Your right, no place for packing peanuts!

I build commercial aircraft in 144 scale, and the 747’s tend to be pretty big. Nearing retirement age, we’d like to move to a warmer climate, but I always worry about my models being shipped. Thanks for the great idea!

Hi David, glad the video was helpful. The 747 is a big one in 1/144 and would do well with this packing method. Good luck with your move and congrats on the upcoming retirement. Thank you for taking the time to provide some positive feedback!

Very informative, only thing I would add is that it might help to by attaching a piece of tape or two to the bottom of the foam to help attach it to the bottom of the box.
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's better from a "shock" perspective to have just a little opportunity for movement/cushion. Also, the foam base is pretty much held in place from the friction against the box walls. Thanks for the feedback.

Beautifull technique. It seems that is working pretty good. I have only one question. What about airplanes that has lot's of weapons like a fully loaded fighter or a bomber etc. Because i am a modeller for years, we must also consider durability and the stability of those wings while we use the tyre ups if you understand what i mean..I am trying to imagine how to tight a fully loaded SU-27 using this way of packing for a post somewhere. Do you have any suggestions on that?Have you try it because a Spitfire is not so difficult situation to prepare.
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I have shipped some loaded out modern jets using this technique. I typically will just put the zip ties and foam standoffs around the fuse instead of the wings. It does get tricky, sometimes, to find the right places to "lock it" down without impacting the weapons load.

Any advice on a 1/700 HMS Dreadnought ship with rigging in the mast?
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels Жыл бұрын
That's a challenge for sure. I have shipped models like that (not as complicated) upright with pillow batting around the rigging (given that I use EZ line rigging and it's flexible). What type of rigging? And if you want, you can send me a pic to my facebook page (messenger) and I can brainstorm with you.

I'm watching this and wondering if it will work for a 1/35 tank. I will give it a try, off to Wal-Mart for some foam and fill.
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 4 жыл бұрын
I would think it would work even better for tanks. They don't always have a many fiddly bits as the planes do. If you find it at Walmart, let me know. All that I have ever found is the thinner stuff (like 1") versus the 3" pillow foam that I pick up at Hobby Lobby.
