Not really. You can buy a six pack of good looking (non brass) door knobs at Home Depot every year in November and December for around$25. The cost of primer/paint will cost you about the same, and the time... well, we don't even need to talk about that.

I read the blog post and was hoping to get an idea of how long to let it dry? You just said “let it dry good.” How long is that?
@OriginallyWorn Жыл бұрын
Hello! I hope this helps you save some cash! I have had mine down for years and they are still great. I will say I did start to slowly replace them as the years went on for various reasons and as I could afford to. I let some of mine dry longer then other times. I would say at least a few hours between coats and overnight at the end for them to cure. Also depends on the climate where you are spraying. A hot humid garage is going to take longer then a basement. Hope this helped! ❤️

Does the door close as easy as before? I have done this to several doors but the latch part (in the strike plate) doesn't slide shut as well. I have to turn the handle and intentionally close it, It doesn't just glide close. Also, for anyone watching this, do the hinges one at a time so you don't have to take the whole door off. I have 5 doors in my master bath/closet area. I did the top hinges first. When they were finished and reinstalled, I did the middle hinges. Simpler than doing the entire door at one shot.

Samantha Lutz hey! You know, I didn’t really keep track. I did all of them in our home but have no idea how much spray paint I used. I do know that it was more then I thought it would be. @@OriginallyWorn I was thinking if doing this same thing to my bathroom faucet, and tub faucet, how do u think it would hold up in a wet environment?
@OriginallyWorn3 жыл бұрын
@@kaylaperkins8309 I don’t think it would hold up for really long. But you never know. I have heard of people have success for it for a year or so.

How have these held up over time?
@OriginallyWorn2 жыл бұрын
Hello! The strike plates have scratches on them, the knobs have a few dings (but nothing major) and the hinges are still perfect. I would still do this again. :) hope that info helps you.

Would this work on an outdoor front door?
@OriginallyWorn4 жыл бұрын
Marjanne Descamps technically yes, but there are a lot easier ways to paint a front door :)

How long did you let each coat cure?

Andrea Hamblen 12-24 hours if I could stand it 🤪 probably more like 8 though.

How much $$$ were those 3 cans of spray paint?

Honestly I do not remember. Maybe $5 each, so $15.

I am very pleased. A few knobs has some Knicks but really great overall

Great tips but why dint you use Annie’s. I am about to do mine and that is what I thought I would try. Would like to know your thoughts before I do that
@OriginallyWorn5 жыл бұрын
Cards Are My Canvas hey! You could certainly use Annie Sloan products. I have many times for furniture hardware. I like to dabble in all the stuff without really good reasoning. But I also like how the spray paint seems to make a black “shell” on the knobs. Like you can’t tell they are painted. They look purchased black, new.

Thanks for the quick response Rochelle! I think I will try the spray too! Fingers crossed it lasts!

How is it holding up a year later?
@OriginallyWorn3 жыл бұрын
They have held up great. A few knicks or wear here or there sure. The strike plates are the worst looking. The hinges are perfect.

So, you used a black primer as the topcoat. In other words, you did not actually apply paint, you simply stopped after applying the primer. So, I'm wondering why you did not take another step and actually apply paint.
@OriginallyWorn4 жыл бұрын
No. You must have misunderstood. The black is a rustoleum spray paint that does contain an element of primer in it. So if anything you could have skipped the white priming steps, but I think prep work is important, so I do both.
@davidderolph28454 жыл бұрын
@@OriginallyWorn OK, thanks for clarifying. I overlooked the fact that the black coating was a primer & paint product.

TIP # ONE: Don't paint your door knobs, hinges, screws and such hardware.
@bethh42713 жыл бұрын
Why
@tree3po3 жыл бұрын
@@bethh4271 why? cause you shouldn't paint over original materials like that. I just spent months stripping the paint off knobs and hinges from my new house (11 doors). Now I also have to figure out how to remove painted bricks around my fireplace. People are so dumb sometimes. You don't paint on metals or prick etc.etc. I mean, one can do anything one wants to do of course..... but it don't make right.
@bethh42713 жыл бұрын
I disagree. If you want orig cheap gold doorknobs that aren’t worth keeping and you want to strip them back to original status, go for it. Most might agree that painting them updates a Hime.

Pretty good. There are a few nicks on the knobs but everything else I did is still perfect.

No video follow up, just the info in the comments. It would be a short video ;) few nicks but overall good. Might replace knobs if I were to do it again, but paint everything else still.
