This painting tutorial shows how to paint a super full moon over the ocean in oils.
I painted this nocturne on 48x30 inches canvas in one sitting, wet on wet, it took me about 6 hours to complete not counting coffee breaks. This is mostly an imaginary scene partly based on my older seascape.
Here I offer an insight into my technique and share painting tips I taught myself over the years.
Hope you will find it useful or at least entertaining.
I used only four oil colors to create this night ocean painting:
titanium white, phthalo blue, indigo and cadmium yellow light.
I used mineral spirits l as a thinner, but any oil will do as well.

What a wonderful way to enjoy a part of the day; to watch you bring another stunning seascape to life! I didn't really notice about the area you felt you overworked until you said it. It always interests me to see when an artist feels they're done, what areas they feel need more detail, or areas that may need less. I think for the mood and realism you strive to show, you consistently strike the right balance. Thanks for sharing!

Stunning Eva.... Do you cover your canvas with a medium or dry canvas and add the medium with you paint as you go? Forgive the intrusion, new to painting. Again, absolutely stunning!
@EvaVolf
@EvaVolf 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Grant! I’m always happy to help. I don’t cover my canvas with anything, just buy already primed ones. When I paint I add a medium: Liquin original (helps dry faster), Lavender Spike Oil (improves the flow and it’s the most natural and harmless one), or Gamsol/mineral spirits (the cheapest option). Either of them works great for me

Thanks for the video. For You, my poem on the theme of the moon and painting. The poem is Straight, yellow rays of light. Straight, yellow rays of light, Go, from the moon's satellite, And, the sea is covered with a veil, The veil that leads to birth, On the surface of the sea, waves, And, waves like hands intertwining, Form, a strand of another wave, White foam, overgrown with them, Creating a new Shine, Shine, yellowness from the rays, Which, caress the waves, Beautiful, picture of the sea, It's coming from the surface, The water itself, to the depth of, And, there in the abyss of water, Where, there is no light at all, Bottomless, the depth will merge, From the height of the sky, And, the mystery of depth and heights, Merges into one ethereal, A large, mirrored picture, Both above and below, The planet, our water, Just wish and call, Those yellow rays of light, Which are drawn from the moon, Gilding, the surface of the water, Which is reflected in love, Love, paintings by a marine artist.
