THE LIGHTHOUSE // On Black Canvas // EASY for a Beginner

Starting with a black canvas we are Painting THE LIGHTHOUSE today. The focus is on HOW TO PAINT CLOUDS, WATER, AND A GLOW in the sky. Easy for a beginner. I am using water mixable oil, but you can use any brand of paint.

Step 1, Black Gesso canvas first.
Step 2. When Gesso is dry, cover with a clear oil medium.
PAINT COLORS: Water mixable oil paint
Titanium white, Black, Ultramarine blue, Alizarin crimson, Sap green, Phthalo green, Burnt Sienna, Raw umber, Cad yellow
OTHER MATERIALS:
Canvas (Board) 12 x 16, Small chip brushes, 1” landscape brushes, #5 palette knife, #10 palette knife, 6 #filbert, #3 fan, #2 liner, Large flat floral brush, soft blender or bunny brush and clear oil medium.

Thank you so much Deanie! A bunny brush is simply another name for a Blender or a Hake brush. You can find them in any craft or art store. They are made of a soft goat hair.

Yes it was Anna. I frequently use canvas boards as they are easy to store and don't take up much room.

I finally got to do this light house. Glad I used a reconditioned back canvass, because I had used to much Linseed, I had p Robles adding 2nd coats of clouds, and a mess with the lighthouse. But I’m going to try again

I just learned something, I had cleaned my brushes, and began to paint the lighthouse, and realized my brushes were too damp, I washed off my beginnings and will wait for my brushes to dry.

Yes Vicki, you need dry brushes to start! I have made that mistake too... 🤣 Lots of lessons to learn. 💕

Can I use acrylic instead water based oil?

Yes you can Mox, the acrylics may not blend as easily as oils, but it will still work. Go ahead and give it a try. 🌹

Yovette, I notice you used linseed oil on the canvas, is that used on oil paint? I didn't notice if you are doing your painting mostly will oil paints. I only want to learn with acrylics for at least 1 year. Please reply if you can... can I do same using canvas with acrylic? Thank you Nancy. Pirrello of Sydney

Yes Nancy, Linseed oil is used only with oil paints. Acrylic paint uses a slow dry extender medium to do the same thing, but it still does not stay wet as long as oils do. I like oils because of the length of blending time. They stay wet for a couple of days. But you can definitely do this painting with acrylics. It may not look exactly the same but it will be close. 🌺 Have fun with this.

What exactly a bunny brush

A bunny brush is simply a very soft blending brush made of goat hair. It is also sometimes called a Hake brush. Any very soft brush will work Vicki.
