Painting a full moon in the night sky is probably a lot easier than you might think! With just a few colors and building the blends up slowly, you too can create a beautiful nighttime scene.
In this video I show you how to paint this bright full moon on a cloudy, dramatic night. I show you how to blend the colors, how to paint the glow, and how to paint the clouds.

The round ones are artist loft scrumbler or princeton round blender brushes. The others I change up a lot so I don't hold much importance on them. Also I apologize for the palette camera being out of sync for a few minutes around the 20 min mark. This was my new camera and gave me issues. Tried to catch it all, but looks like a piece of it slipped by. Should be fixed from here on out!!! Thank you!

Chuck Black what type of canvas do you use? Is it a soft one that makes blending easier?

Chuck... My canvases seem to be toothy if that makes sense... I'm going to Hobby lobby today.. Should I look for a smoother one?
@chuckblackart

My canvas is toothy as well. But I apply 2-3 additional layers of gesso to it. I use a hard board to scrape the excess off with each layer to fill in the crevices and smooth it out. Doing a video in the near future on this!!

A very helpful observation-that different regions, climates (and seasons) all affect the paint. True indeed. I think though, that with acrylic paint, it's difficult to get even, consistent color throughout a painting; and smooth color blending and transitions, if too little paint is used. It seemed that in this painting, you would find the color you wanted without much difficulty, but run out of it in only a few square inches, then have to start all over, mix another tiny amount, and try to match the color again. This makes the painting look blotchy and uneven, adds to the total time the painting takes, and ultimately uses more paint. Ultimately, I don't think this poses any real problem for you for two reasons: first, you are a very, talented and skilled artist! Second, you are very patient and persistent-you will stay with a painting, doing whatever is needed, until it's right. So I think at least with acrylics, mixing larger amounts, laying on more per stroke (at least sometimes), and using *slightly* larger brushes, over areas/expanses... might work well. There is a tendency, sometimes a rather strong tendency for many of us, including me, to conserve the artist grade paints. But it can lead to this I'm describing above. Maybe this all applies less to oil paint- I don't have a great deal of experience with it. But maybe paint conservers in acrylics, struggle more with blending, and turn to oil paint, when the problem can be somewhat easy to avoid with acrylics with a small change in technique-? Well, thank you so much for your insights, guidance, and expertise. You have helped so many people, turned so many people on to art and painting; and inspired them to create art of their own. Godspeed.

Just discovered your channel and subbed, great work sir. I have only ever worked in greyscale and graphite, and totally new to paint, but your tutorials are fantastic- both in your attitude, and in the fact that they ARE tutorials, unlike a lot of stuff on youtube(which are basically sped up and cut down versions, which are basically adverts for the artists patreon services- I'm not knocking patreon, but yeah... lol) On that subject, do you have a patreon, if not, it might be something to consider(I'm basically shooting myself in the foot huh?) Anyways, thanks for sharing your gift of art, and knowledge sir 🤗

Oils have limitations and acrylics have limitations. I just try to take advantage of both mediums and their strengths. So by painting oils over the top of acrylics I can get the best of both worlds and get the effect on after quicker and easier

Your patience and attention to detail to achieve the degree of realism you do is laudable. The moon is one of those iconic images however that when depicted needs to be accurately rendered or the viewer recognizes it right away or senses something is askew. You uncharacteristically painted the moons landmarks haphazardly and inaccurately depicted them. As the moon and its glow was your expressed goal I would like to understand better your thought process. Thank you for sharing your time, skills and work with your fellow travelers.
@chuckblackart
@chuckblackart 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you I appreciate that. Great point here and I actually don't do the best job explaining my process all of the time so this is good! When I work in the acrylic portion of my paintings I focus more building everything up as a whole and do not stress on the finer details. Since this is part one and I'll be finishing the painting in oils, I planned on refining the moon's landmarks at the end. This process as a whole allows me to achieve the desired effect a little faster. Hope that helped clear that up for you! :)
