How to Paint a Go Kart

I'm building a go kart for my kids. Of all the steps and decisions to be made (welding, what thickness and type of steel, what bolt types, etc.) painting was the one that intimidated me the most. Thanks for the concise, yet thorough, explanation. Can't wait to show my kids the kart.

Excellent Job! I been restoring Dirt Bikes and Mini Bikes for about 10 years and my Buddy sand blasts and Powder coats all my parts and frames bc the prep work takes forever, but this came out Sharp. Great Color choice Also !

Mineral spirits, laquer thinner, acetone. All would work and do the same job of cleaning the metal. They are all solvents. Just work with them in a well ventilated space.

Doesn’t matter. Rattle can is fast and cheap, airbrush is precise and time consuming, powder coat is durable.

The car is very hard to move left or right or push back , while the live exle or one wheel drive , is more light , fast movement turn left and right .. I build 3 live exle gokart based on your map .. depends on what the instructions say. primer is usually dry within an hour though.

You can get a VHT type of ceramic spray paint. You can pick it up at any auto parts store it works pretty good. A lot of times the color will end up being a little bit lighter after you run it hot.

My go cart is kinda half surface rust and half paint. Wouldn't it be best to go down bare metal on the whole kart it's a roketa gk-17k

+Chevy Man Whatever you feel would be good. If you go to bare metal, you know it will be a good paint job. Anything less, and you will have less than stellar results and uneven looking paint. You can kind of cheat to save effort by getting a fine wire cup to knock down the surface rust, which wont take much off of a nice baked on paint job, then hit the original paint with fine sandpaper. The problem with half paint half rust is that sometimes the paint has separated a little, rusting beneath the paint and may come off in large chunks later on.

I would venture to say that sales of an adult sized kart frames would be a huge hit. I have been looking for a simple, not overly expensive, kart frame to fit a 6 foot adult. I do not have all the needed tools to build my own from your plans but sure would like to have one.

I got a good deal on a 2 seater (Yard Kart) Go Kart and it's like a royal blue factory paint color ,But my daughter and myself are huge fans of The Joker, So we want it painted in a Joker style Scheme of Bright Purple and Bright Green. So if I'm understanding you right I need to wash the go-kart down ,maybe spray some degreaser around clean again and dry it off ,Then scuff the factory paint with a corse sanding sponge and or sand paper, Then clean it again using mineral spirits.Then I need to spray it down with a coat of Rust-Oleum Primer then it should be fine to paint with some Rust-Oleum purple and green spray paint???? Just wanting to make sure I've got what you've said down to a science so I don't screw it up and severely piss off my 10 year old daughter lol.

so your kart if it has original paint is most likely going to be powder coated, which is extremely durable. Just lightly scuff with a fine sandpaper and you can paint directly over that after getting it cleaned up with mineral spirits or isopropyl alcohol. If you want to use less main paint color, a primer might be a good idea to use less main color (e.g. purple/green)

Im sorry ' Its me again ' as I watch this vid . more & more ' I have been a welder for 15 + yrs. . The 1 weak spot I see is were the steering brace that is welded to the frame . U can call me an Idiot 'or call it over kill ' I've been called a lot worse . It just seems that if u have a welder & a cut off wheel ' why not cut 2 45's out of 1/8 " flat stock & weld that in as a gusset ' top & bottom ? Or u can just call me stupid & that's a waist of time & $ . Jimmie R

+James Rodgers Like the lower steering brace? Its made of 3/16" steel plate and is pretty stout. I don't see how it would flex or bend. This was the most commonly used type of steering setup for a LOT of go karts back in the day. If you feel that this can be improved on, I'm sure it is because the most basic, simple design can always be improved on. This is simple on purpose because it works. If you want to modify it to the way you want, that is awesome and maybe you could message me with a video of how it turned out the way you did it. Its always great to have another set of eyes on something to give it a critical look.
