Regarding tape removal, have you tried sticking it to something else first, such as fabric? I've had luck with that still maintaining a clean line, but removing more readily. After removing you can burnish the edges smooth with a polished stone or spoon to disguise any frayed areas.

Lauren K. I do that too and it works. i usually stick it directly on my pants and it makes the tape gradually less sticky. Gradually, is key. This way you can control the adhesiveness of your tape. I use green painters tape for this.

When the painting is dry, Use a hairdryer on the tape to loosen the glue. Strip off at an angle away from the painting.

I also use the heat tool trick - I’ve never had an issue with paper after I started doing this. I buy the cheap blue painters tape for all my work and then heat the tape slowly as I pull it up - it should be smooth and easy, so if you feel the tape start to resist, just add a little more heat and you’ll be good to go.

Absolutely love both the gradients! 😍😍😍 They are perfect and so vibrant!! Also for the tape, you can try heating it up with a hair dryer so that the glue melts a little and it's easier to peel

If you heat the tape with a hairdryer, it should come up cleanly. Alternatively, you can use console tape (also known as washi tape), which doesn't tear most papers. Legion Stonehenge is notorious for tearing, but the hairdryer method works great.

On tape tearing the paper upon removal. Before putting each tape on paper touch tape to you pant leg. It will pick up just enough lint fiber to not stick so tightly on the paper yet stick well enough to hold it down & still prevent seepage..

In the U.S., I use Scotch blue masking tape and rarely have any issues. Years ago I had a job setting up audio for stage shows; we used tons of masking tape for holding down microphone cords. Each day, the venue was required to provide us with the tape and consequently we received many brands of the same tape. Quality varied hugely depending on the manufacturer of the tape. If you haven't I'd recommend trying different brands until you find the right one for you. Second, when removing tape from a drawing, I've found the gently pulling it off at a 90 degree angle to the direction of the tape minimizes tears. Thank you for this video.

If you’re having trouble with the color leaking under the tape you can try doing a coat of a clear poly or white paint over the edge of the tape first. This is a house painter trick for getting sharp lines. I’ve never tried it with watercolor on paper,usually latex on Sheetrock, so don’t know if it will effect the edge near the tape making it less absorbent but maybe worth some thought

@MariahBeth
@MariahBeth 3 жыл бұрын
Hi those are both up to personal preference. I prefer 300gsm personally. If you are drawing a mandala on with a fine liner or something similar I would probably use hot press as the paper is smooth. Cold press generally has a bit of texture to the surface which can make straight lines a bit harder

Using a hair dryer (the heat) weakens the sticky on back & if do it quickly & towards the side but so far works great! Tape found that give bleed free borders use “blue painter’s tape” but says for sharp lines & so far doing it’s job. Ty for these videos & if keeping my whole page wet (as a beginner) isn’t easy. More practice!

Thank you, I use a heat gun these days and often use blue painters tape! Pre Soaking the paper and using a water activated tape to tape the paper to a board can help the paper to take heavy amounts of water and not buckle. Maybe it’s time to do an updated video

@@MariahBeth Had to learn this the hard way. Got 4 rolls of reg “scotch brand” masking tape & every time bleed under the tape! So went on search & tested 4 tapes to see if “Washi” tape just came off 😵‍💫, the reg blue painters tape (better) but once tested that “blue painters” but has to say, Sharp edges on it and now only tape trust not to bleed even if not doing heavy wet on wet! Again ty for these videos as learn lil bit more from them!

You may smear the edges with talcum powder so that the masking tape wouldnot be able to stick the paper so strongly as to tear off paper while peeling off.

These are beautiful and I have been looking for a video to help me learn blending, thank you! However, when I tried this with cobalt blue and orange, the result wasn't what I expected it to be. They seemed to form an ugly brownish shade when mixed together. Am I using the wrong colour combination or is my technique faulty? I see you use very very little colour and build on - am I right?
@MariahBeth
@MariahBeth 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Blue and orange tend to make grey or brown when mixed together. If you look at a colour wheel you’ll notice that they are opposite each other. Colours closer together will be easier to create beautiful gradients with. Some examples would be blue+green, orange+red orange+yellow blue+yellow. I did blend purple and orange together which can make a brown but I used very little colour and built it up over two layers, letting the paint dry in between layers.

I wonder if skipping the tape altogether and using blu-tac instead would work. Or take an oversized piece of flat cardboard and stick the w/c paper to it with double-sided tape, then tape the whole production to the table. You should be able to strip the painting off the backing, perhaps damaging the back of the painting a bit but who cares..
