I really enjoyed the video. Thank you! Recently I wondered how I would transition from my very much "illustrating" style to painting. This makes it more visual to me :) However, I would like to see a video from you when you take which brush. What is the choice behind is, for what is what kind of brush good for, etc. Not just hovering your mouse cursor over it but maybe showcasing a little example and how you can easily create it with a certain brush. :)

Loving these more character-focused pieces just as much as your environments--great stuff! As for your question, I usually prefer seeing the moment right before (or in some cases the aftermath), rather than the precise moment of impact/action itself, I just think it's more artful & creative to suggest something, rather than to show it explicitly. Not in every case, but in most. I think the same idea applies to film---anyone can film a sex scene, for example, but it takes more thought and skill to suggest someone recently had sex through subtle visual or audio clues, & then the viewer is free to imagine the details themselves--or not, if they so choose, (or if they don't pick up on the hints.)
@VictorStaris2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brenden, thanks so much! These are really cool observations, I am also inclined to think the same way. In terms of a keyframe, it's oftentimes more engaging for the viewers, if you don't spell everything out completely. That being said, it's true that in some fields, like animation for example, for production purposes or for clarity sake, might be a good idea to show the actual moment of action. But as for standalone pieces, I agree with your arguments.

Well you know what, it's good that you ask the question because, for my part, I prefer the present of the action. Not before the action. I also like when it's after the action, showing the difficulty the character had to overcome his obstacles, but I really prefer the present moment of the action, so when the character struggles to overcome something. For example for the drawing you made, I would have liked to see the present moment of the action, where the character attacks the snake and the snake, with its mouth open, also attacks the character. Or even better: show that the hero is going to beat the snake by giving it the deathblow, just before the end of the action. The hero is wounded all over with tattered clothes, the snake has one eye missing, the sand has turned red from blood loss, and the hero, with a cry of victory or a rage to win, is about to stab him in the head... Anyway, I prefer when the action has just started, or when it is about to end or in the middle of the action, rather than showing before it starts, or when the action is over, although I also like it's both. When it's right before, I don't consider that to be really action, even though it's a keyframe. But precisely, a key image is not supposed to show the hero struggling? Isn't it supposed to show a very strong image in emotional power? Since the action is about the moment when things happen, neither before nor after. It could have made the scene even more dynamic. That's my thought, and I want to say that I really like your concept, and thank you for this informative video.

Love this video! I was wondering, do you do thumbnail passes to establish the composition and colour keys, or do you just jump right into the painting?
@VictorStaris2 жыл бұрын
Hey OlivertT, thanks so much! Oh ye, absolutely, i think 50 or 60% of the images on the channel have started as bw thumbnail comp sketches, in some videos I even include that part too. I mostly just do quick 5 or so minutes black and white sketches. If I see some potential, I introduce some linework on top, or redo it altogether, then go ahead with blocking the colour and the rest of the steps. Colour comp sketches are also cool, its basically a personal preference, and whatever pipeline fits you more.

I have a question for you, or anyone else who would care to answer. So there are different types of brushes, like ones that produce the effect of different traditional mediums. What kind is usually used for this kind of painting? I don't really know how the brushes work,or what kinds there are, or what comes with the different softwares etc. I'm just wondering if it comes down to personal preference, or if there is a recommended type of brush. I'm trying to learn what I can before my art tablet gets here.
@sfaira40722 жыл бұрын
In general I'd say people tend to use softer, smoother brushes for big detailed pantings and rougher, textures ones in speedpainting or fast concept art - this way you can signalize texture and dynamics without having to paint all the details, but in the end it all comes down to the personal preference of the artist. I for example tend to paint most of the things with only one, slightly textured brush and only switch to more fancy ones for particular special effects that require a lot of randomness.

What do you mean by unify the shadows ?
@VictorStaris2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jayta90, Thanks for watching! I took the value of the snake in the shadow, as well as the value of the rock behind it, and blended them into one value. So that we could have one bigger shadow shape instead of a more contrasty and fragmented look.
@jayta9062 жыл бұрын
@@VictorStaris ahhh I see- I will have to try that! I’ve been using multiply layers and I’m not sure if it’s making my paintings look right or not- awesome painting btw I love the painterly look you have here; In a production environment do they expect an image like this every 3 hours ?
@VictorStaris2 жыл бұрын
@@jayta906 well it's slightly different, esp in terms of the approach. For this sketch, I didn't have any art direction or limitations, so I pretty much painted whatever I liked, and in such cases, it tends to be a bit faster. In a production env. you have an art direction, an established style, and other things that you might want to keep in mind. So usually, you get way more time to think things through, and really put some thought into the design. Also depends on the project, if it's more stylized or with some heavy realism. For example, right now all the projects I work on, require lots of realism, so heavy work with photos and 3D and not a lot of painting. Btw let me know if you guys want to hear more insights like this in some videos.
