Lots of solid painting advice here! Establishing the darkest dark and greatest contrast early prevents running out of dark values later- if you use up the darkest dark where it isn't justified, you won't be able to go any darker! This is a great, limited color exercise for anyone wanting to focus on value, and warm/cool relationships. Love it!

I'm inspired now Emily, thank u so very much and happy holidays x love Alli and Bella (my lady Chihuahua) Who I'm going to have a try at painting over the next 2 weeks x I have purchased some cotton 300 paper and some Squirrel brushes (sorry if u or any of your fellow subscribers r cruelty free) Both paper and brushes r middle of the road quality but a wee bit closer to high end....this is the best I can afford on my budget as I'm disabled and no longer have a working income. I cant wait to get started, now that I have seen you paint and u gave me my subject, Bella!!! She's a good sitter!!! lol but will probably work from a photo reference. XXX

Nothing is black or white. Having been around Friesians (my favorite breed) and even in your reference photo it is clear there is very dark brown (eyes) and even light brown in the ears. This foal looks about a week old, hence the waves on the forehead and the brush you used is great for that texture. Its forelock (the tuft between the ears) has a brown hue, also. If you were doing a piece in single tone for value purposes, I would agree.

I used Hot Press watercolor paper (Blick brand) and struggled especially with wet on wet. The paper did not seem to absorb the water in the same way Cold Press paper. I'll try again with C.P. paper.

Yes, hot pressed definitely dries a lot faster! It’s great for other techniques though. :-)
