Great guide as usual! Though I was wondering about a potential idea I had for my own Skaven as I just got into the faction myself (bless you Skaventide box). If I read correctly, a lot of the Clanrats are pulled from various clans to form their units and not often from the same clan from what I understand. So I'm thinking of going wild with their rags in terms of possible colorations. I love the idea from a lore and setting perspective, though I was wondering if making not-so-cohesive looking force works well as it's something I personally haven't seen or tried before.

Hello Duncan, what green colors would your recommend for clan Pestilence, instead of the red color?
@yolof4566 ай бұрын
Hi Duncan, Why do you apply brown on the shield and coat if you are anyways painting it red later? The brown seems to come from the wash and not the first layer of brown colour. Thank you!

The red being applied was to demonstrate that you can leave it brown or paint it red if you feel thats what you want to do.

You used no contrast paints for the vid, and I especially appreciate This on the skin, slapping some guilliman flesh on that face, at least for me, could ruin that. But… for the fabrics do you think that using some contrast for achieving a shaded but mor vibrant tone is ok? I know that you could just do an highlight after the shade but im trying to reduce the layering on the mini because i am a beginner What do you think?
@Southboundpachyderm5 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Use the contrasts where you can get away with it. They’re extremely useful and versitile paints, but they do leave a glossy finish that a lot of people really don’t like. But if you’re finding you have that problem but still want more shading, it’s easy enough to mitigate by just being more selective of where you place the contrasts. Also I suspect you’re probably trying to evenly spread the contrast after you brush it on and that’s what’s making the horrible blotchy look. With the contrast, always always always add a few drops of your contrast medium and start light and work your way darker by adding smaller and smaller layers of the contrast. Also, once you make a brushstroke, leave it. Do not try to go back and spread the paint more. Let it dry then go back with a brush full of contrast medium and you can reactivate enough of it to even out any dark/light spots with it. My whole method of painting is to use the contrasts to block out my main colors. Because they’re so vibrant and tone rich, they’re an extremely good base over a light grey primer. Then after blocking in my main colors I go back with proper layer/base acrylics and add highlights and shading. This has a two fold effect for me of eliminating the glossiness of the contrasts while also getting some really really nice dramatic blends. The contrasts are probably the best paints to learn with imo just because they’re not as fussy as learning everything you need to paint to the same quality with just acrylics/layering techniques. Just focus on painting as much as you can while you’re new, and as you learn you’ll figure out your own methods and you’ll know when you’re ready to move to more advanced painting methods because youll know what the contrast paints are doing to the model that you don’t like
@MariaOrtelloMeri635 ай бұрын
@@Southboundpachyderm wow! Thanks for the advices! In less words i mean that maybe is easier highlighting the face and the skin with layering because you can easily follow the shape of the mini. But… on the cloth (a flat area) maybe I will have some difficult work to do. I don’t mentioned in the comment up there that my color scheme will be a bit different: I will use black and red (eshin). I know that black is a difficult color to paint, because of this maybe a contrast with a bit of medium (for control on the result) will give me an ok look. Maybe for the red i can handle the layering? Maybe for these cloth i will use contrast but thanks for the advices because now i can choose the paint I want to buy more easily👍 A big “grazie” from italy
@Southboundpachyderm5 ай бұрын
@@MariaOrtelloMeri63 yeah I have a hard time with black too, but I have personally found that the Vallejo 70.950 “black” to have a really solid coverage. Red has been tricky for me and so far I hate all the citadel reds because they’re really thick. I have found for really nice full reds I’m really enjoying the pro acryl red. If they don’t have that where you live, the Vallejo brand also makes a really nice red. the new army painter fanatics are all really good paints in general too and while I haven’t tried a true red or black from the fanatics line, I’ve really enjoyed the new “triad” system as it makes picking shades and highlights just that much quicker and easier. I hope all that helps you! greetings and a warm welcome from Colorado, USA! Good luck on your painting project!

Would you say that the tools make half of the journey ? I mean, how much it's important to use the top quality brush, even for a beginner like me ? I don't have access to those Artis Opus , I'm using classical Citadel Brushes. And the result is 5 time less beautiful than yours, so I'm trying to quantify in this failure the responsibility proportion between my low skill and my tools 😂

The higher quality equipment can come later. As for a brush, Citadel are reliable, just make sure it holds a good point such as your Medium and Small Layer Brushes (Artis Opus size 1,0 or 00 equivalents)
