I want to start painting abstract to get loose and free from the fear and anxiety that has been holding me captive for so long from growing… blossoming… expressing myself… and believing that i can. I want to paint abstract to see what i cannot see in life and understand what i don’t understand!

your voice is very pleasant and calming, I immediately want to trust you. it’s as if i came to my granny to drink tea and talk about life. I want to learn how to paint abstract pictures to get away from the rules that were instilled in me at art school. when you are almost always sure what the result will be, for example, when you paint a still life. i am very afraid to start, because I don’t know what will happen in the end. i want my works to contain my thoughts, feelings, emotions, but it’s so scary to start… you strive for the ideal, beauty, for people around you to appreciate your work. i am a self-critical person, and it is very important to me that the result satisfies me. i hope i will succeed!

Thanks so much Lindey for your comment 😊 Letting go and enjoying the process is the key. Throw caution to the wind and experiment without worrying what it looks like it's about how you feel. Everything is valid as it comes from You! And you are unique, let your story unfold and many wonderful surprises will be created! Happy painting 🎨🖌️😊

I also have taken some of Joy’s classes and not only learned so much but Joy also helped me answer the question I’d been asking myself since I was in second grade. I remember sitting by the art supplies my teacher kept. I remember the special fragrance the crayons had, how the paper felt when I gently touched it, and how much I wanted to make something beautiful but didn’t know how. I thought I was “less than” because I was different than my classmates, or so I was told. It wasn’t until I was I a young adult that I realized that those differences were my normal but I still didn’t know how to paint something beautiful. Then Joy asked the question, “how do you feel when you try to paint?”, how do you want to feel when you paint? And I realized that because I believed my differences made me inferior I’d never be able to create something beautiful. I knew in my head my work didn’t have to be like everyone else’s. That it was OK to paint what I saw inside my head; but my HEART didn’t believe it. I didn’t know what I felt until Joy asked the question and for the first time i soul searched and found my answer. Thank you Joy!

Thank you...I've been looking for you, lol, or a course like yours for a while. So grateful I found you. I'm delighted you start with this question. Isn't it a great discovery at the beginning of any adventure - Why? Well, my husband is a botanical artist. He does beautiful work and I am a huge fan. I'm a designer, so both live very creative lives. But I want to explore art in a more relaxed and free way. Not so serious or studied. I love color exploration, effects, combinations. During Covid I discovered alcohol ink art and produced a number of pieces I was very proud of. But then the world got back on track and work got in the way. Now I have a little more free time and would love to explore and create using multiple techniques and mediums. I'm so excited to learn all you have to teach. Thanks again. Cheers.

I love abstract art. Some of my favorite artists are Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and many more as welm as some much newer artists, Jodi Ohl and Betty Frank's to name a few. I love the discovery of different parts of a piece. I love depth and wondering what's underneath as well as colors almost blending. I love seeing layers that include blending and geometric or organic shapes.

I did several courses with Joy and I enjoyed them so much! Her classes gave me confidence and the skills to express myself.Joy is a brilliant teacher! To answer the question, I want to paint abstract because I feel free and it gives me an immense pleasure and joy. It makes my heart sing. It gives me the wings to do do whether I like without limitation of worrying about the end of the result. I actually enjoyed the process of making art without fear of failing.

Thank you so much Joy. It’s such a good question that you’re asking. This is what I’ve come up with 6:36 of my ego“ to my true self. I find it reassuring to see myself on the page, the process of creating wholeness. The process of getting there can be anything from shattering, shocking, peppery and even destructive as well as exasperating surprising amazing and joyful. It is perfect timing to express this because I’m about to write my artist statement for the end of year assessment at art school! Thank you so much for the prompt. I’m learning so much from your lessons thank you for your generosity. Wishing you well from New Zealand

I have taken most of Joy's classes and get immense pleasure and great ideas from them. Joy is a wonderful teacher, she is so enthusiastic and always positive and encouraging. The classes are really well devised and constructed and suitable for everyone, whether a beginner or more advanced. I was delighted when I first saw Joy's advertisement for her classes as I felt I need to move on from the type of painting I was doing at the time. I was very attracted to abstract paintings and longed to be able to paint in that way myself to express feelings and thoughts rather than paint straightforward 'scenes' .

I love your enthusiasm in sharing your art Joy and I have enjoyed several of your classes. I want to paint abstracts because it feels very freeing and intuitive. What is interesting is, when I was younger, I didn’t care for abstract work at all. But in the last several years I have found myself drawn to them more and more! It’s is the freedom and emotion I feel in abstract work that pulls me in. Good luck with your new channel!

Thanks so much Joy! An excellent question. I want to paint as a another avenue for my creativity (I design costume jewellery) and explore a medium totally different. I get enough of realism every day! It has always been abstract or surrealism that has attracted me. I love both moody and dark works, as well as colourful abstract and I just want to create something that speaks to me.

I started about 3 yrs ago with watercolors. Invested tons of money on good brands, only to switch now to tons of money on acrylics. It just looked like abstract was where the fun was at. Im not really interested in realism. I do like your figures and would like to learn something like that. Thanknyou for teaching your knowledge. I do get a lot out of watching you.

I learned drawing (portraits) for some years but somehow I was never really satisfied. Now, a few years leter, I would say: I don't want to copy nature, I want to paint it. But how? Non-representational seems to be the way.
