I was wondering how you personally started off your artistic journey! I know a lot of creative individuals who are held back because they don't have the tools and money to start. Personally, I've been yearning to get a drawing tablet but struggle with the money aspect of it as well. I want to be able to create more and at better aspects. Seeing your amazing work is so persuading to do so much more but I am held back.. Right now, I am using a phone & pen and do nondigital art on the side. Though it is extremely enjoyable, I want to create digital art of your level. I've tested a drawing tablet without a screen before but wish for one with it. I feel like I would be able to create so much more because I already have experience in photoshop and other programs and of course years of art experience. Being held back when I know I can do better is extremely hard.. Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for inspiring more in people.

Hey Lei, sorry for the late reply, missed your comment somehow. Ok, I see what you mean, its not always easy to just jump in especially when you have other responsibilities. I started in this field without any formal education, I was mostly learning by watching tutorials online, being part of various art forums and so on. Also had a friend or 2 who gave some feedback time to time. I was working in a completely different field, before switching to art. If you are determined to work on a tablet with screen, then I guess the cheapest and most reasonable option is Huion or XP pen I think, they have solid products not as expensive as Wacom. For a long time I was working on the basic drawing tablet without screen. Also try to be part of community art contests, to keep you motivated to draw more.
@Suzicide
@Suzicide 2 жыл бұрын
I know this is super late (maybe it still helps), but I would also just start with a screenless tablet like many artists. Screen tablets can be very expensive and it's a luxury you shouldn't rely on imo if you really want to learn how to make digital art, there's nothing mediocre about making digital art with a screenless tablet and you can get used to it. In fact it's a lot better for your back for example. The majority of things to learn about digital art is also unrelated to what tablet you use and you can easily transfer your knowledge if you ever decide to switch to screen tablets. My first screenless tablet was under 100$ and there was nothing bad about it. I know the struggle but I honestly think it's a wall in our heads that doesn't contain any real points (if you are able to afford any screenless tablet that is) It's just mental resistance to get started you should overcome for your own sake.

@VictorStaris
@VictorStaris 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kate! Thanks so much for watching! Yes I know it's hard or at least counterintuitive to leave some areas purposely less detailed. The idea is to design the location in a way so that the focal point doesn't fight for attention with other spots on the image. That's why you can introduce some fog for example, atmospheric perspective, and purposely create areas of rest to balance out the focal points. Thanks again for checking the vid, glad you also practice painting )

This is so nice! The fog effect added a whole lot of new depth and story to the scene. I appreciate how you show all of your process and break down in details. It's crucial to learn about the thought process of an art piece as much as the technical aspects. I really like your videos a lot because you are showing both aspects. Thank you for that :D I'm wondering when you first start the pieces like this, do you already have drawn out some thumbnail sketches? Or do you just improvise and go with the flow? It's just that I tend to lose my initial ideas as I progress.. sometimes it's because I get so obsessed with unnecessary details, or sometimes I keep adding and changing stuff and end up with a mess.. When I ask around, people just give me a simple answer like 'practice more' and I know that is the answer lol XD ... but I'm curious if you have a different perspective or an in-depth advice for this situation. In short, I'm curious what would be the best way to practice simplifying the thought process and focus on the core idea.
@VictorStaris
@VictorStaris 3 жыл бұрын
Hey DuDu, how's it going! Oh yeah, you are totally right about the fog, it tends to bring things together by placing them in the same environment, just need to keep an eye not to over do it. Usually I have a theme in mind before starting, and a bunch of refs, now whether or not I have a preliminary sketch it varies case to case. Ideally would be nice to have 3-4 composition sketches before picking one that's better, but often times I just stick to first idea due to time constraints. For this one in particular, I had a similar bw comp in mind in the beginning, but it changed quite a bit in the end. About maintaining the initial statement and energy from the comp sketch to the final image, it's tricky. I recall lots of cases when after 3 hours my painting wasn't as impressive as a 15 minute bw sketch. Here I would advise to first monitor your values, make sure your contrast and the focal point reads the same as in your bw sketch or reference. Squint you eyes often to check how the biggest shapes read, buy blurring out the details. Simplify your darks by unifying them an removing some contrast. Make sure you image is super readable zoomed out, or from a distance. There are many more aspects that you could follow, these are some. I definitely will cover some of them in future vids. Thanks for watching again :) hope this helps!

@@VictorStaris I can't thank you enough for all your advice. I struggle a lot with values so I really should keep that in mind when I'm doing my studies. Btw, I've been dying to ask you this but do you teach online courses anywhere, or do you have any plan to do mentoring maybe in the future?

Question: How do you manage your layering? Do u divide them into: foreground, background and mid ground/focal point? PS: I've been struggling with my digital landscape painting process lately, seems really like you're God sent thank you for this 💕
@VictorStaris
@VictorStaris 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rachele, thank you so much! Yes, usually I start with just a layer for the drawing or sketch, and then separate them based on planes. Sometimes at first if I will paint light or shadow on some shapes that are on separate layers, i am clipping the layers with light and shadow so that i paint only inside the borders of the shape. Like in this video, when I painted light on the main structure. Also don't overdo it with layers too much because it might feel like everything is like a paper cut out, when you are confident of the result, collapse some layers and paint on top. I sometimes have more layers then needed because I share the psd files, so people can see more progression.

Hello, can I do this to paint traditionally? As an intermediate artist I know how to draw, and paint. Some challenges I came across is I haven’t made as much improvement to my art, and due to my mental health and depression, it’s important for artists to discuss how to deal with them on your art journey. Basically I get tired hearing the same especially from people who tells others to practice, and not the truth about how to be skilled at anything especially drawing, and painting. Not only I wanna draw people I actually want to draw landscapes, from nature, animals, and anything. The style of my art I am strongly drawn to is surrealism, and I am interested in improving my skills without worrying myself to practice, and practice. When in reality the way how you practice matters. Because of the need for the right exercises, main goal, and etcetera, it will take some time for me to improve my art.
