Black cloth is so difficult to pull off. Far too often it just comes across as an unfinished paint job. Many see the completed black cloth as a zenithal starting point waiting to be done. Your methods here bring it out of the realm of looking unfinished.

It never hurts man, a top tip would be to practise them on a *helpful* surface first, some details are legitimately better than others. Let's say it's drybrushing... Soft surfaces: Good robes, like these Hard surfaces: Good textured scales/skin (you'll notice the amount of dragons/demons in our recent-ish) content. Give yourself a helping hand, pick a mini you like, enjoy! Any questions just let us know in another comment on a recent video (not a reply, they get lost)

I have been thinking about starting my own youtube channel for hobby stuff, and you already were doing what was my best idea! Loving this format for your videos - short, to the point, but brimming with options and content to try out!! Would you consider exploring some options for wood? Hello, I have a bottle of some Abaddon Black. Along with other colors: Fulgrim Pink, Leadbelcher, Druchii Violet, Nuln Oil. I wanted to paint some Kriegs and make their coats a black color, leaning towards a darker shade, whilst making armored parts a metallic. The models are to be primed with White Scar. Given the colors, are these sufficient to mix for Method #3? If so, which ones are recommended?

I'm trying to do guard in a black uniform. I feel like a nice grey blue highlight right on the black is a good highlight but its a bit leathery and I dont think they would be wearing leather uniforms. Any thoughts on which technique would be best to make it look like cloth but newer? Perhaps a more grey bluegrey and dry brushed on instead of just exge highlighted...? Black is hard !
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds to me like you need a transition before you get to a colour that bright. Build up the surface using a darker grey, drybrush (covering quite a lot of the surface) before you shrink the selection and gently buff your brighter grey. Let us know how it goes!🤞😊

I really like the first one, with the blue mixed in. I want to paint my drukhari in a sort of blue/black way, and I'm looking into slapchop painting as well. Should I do the slapchop, then put a mix of something like abaddon black and leviadon blue contrast on top of the black base + grey drybrush followed by white drybrush? Then maybe do something like a dark reaper drybrush/highlight? I want the armour to look "oily", both in colour but especially in texture, so I don't want it matte. Anyone have any tips they can share for getting a black/dark blue, oily looking armour?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
Hey buddy :). If you like you could just change the colour you prime or slapchop drybrush with, e.g. dark blue base, blue grey drybrush, this will tint your entire paint job in the direction you want, you can then carefully drybrush whatever you like. What you suggested will be fine though, for the armour just finish it with a wash, maybe put a little of a green shade in with nuln oil or something. We have a hugely in-depth Slapchop video coming soon, keep your eyes peeled, we're explaining how to get the most from the technique, it's a big one :)

I started testing the first method on some spare sprue etc, but the leviadon blue gave NO colour over black at all, is the difference going to be more noticeable when there are a cloak’s recesses involved, or is it entirely for texture/pattern?

@Alf_Hairy-arse

It's a dampening pad. They sell them as part of their range. It adds a tiny, controllable amount of moisture to the brush to improve paint flow and helps prevent chalky streaking. It's the dry drybrush equivalent of thinning your paints.

@@jonathankahn3005 sorry, don't know about different brands. I haven't personally used one. I imagine you could go cheap with an office one - they use them so you don't have to lick your finger if flicking through paper. I absolutely can, but maybe not in the way you think, you don't ned to change the paints, but just use masking tape! Make sure the contrast stage has dried fully, and take the initial stickyness from the tape by putting it on clothing first, you can also spray varnish the mini to protect it (optional).
