In a lot of his videos he has stated that no technique or way of painting is bad, it's just the approach and finding what works best for you as a painter. Plus with how detailed both of you are naturally in your video tutorials, I think you could really help people unlock some painting secrets that they have been struggling with!

HAHA, I am just amazed at convergent evolution of model painters. No one ever shows or tells you (except you) to use back of your offhand thumb to unload brush, or thumb nail, or dabbing the brush in your mouth to get the point back or just suck off (not like that) the paint so you can wick up the excess on the work piece etc. There must surely be a scientific explanation to why the back of your thumb is hands down (pun intended) the worlds best blending palette? This is something that just naturally happens with experience, but people around the world do it without a second thought or being taught to do it! My painting is still atrocious after 20+ years of miniature painting but all the questionably 'bad habits' were always self taught and totally nailed like a pro. Go figure! The one bad habit I have finally kicked is dabbing the brush in my mouth! 20+ years back the paints might have been toxic, but dang they tasted so much better in the 80s&90s than these nasty tasting non toxic modern paints! P.s GW's Snakebite leather was the best tasting back in the mid 90's, close second would have to be Striking Scorpion Green! What was your favourite flavour?

It might be worth trying out their mediums, all their products rock, and they're no exception, it's a good way to bring satin in early. Otherwise you can transition to them from mid steps, or just go a bit slower, dilute more, and change to a satin primer (huge difference in one go)

From all the different palettes to brushes. Pretty much watching your videos exclusively. Any suggestions on where to start with supplies? Would love to get stuff from your store, but being new I'm not sure jumping into the deep end of the pool is the best way to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@ArtisOpus9 ай бұрын
Hey buddy, welcome to the hobby, it's one of the best meditative pastimes out there IMO. It can definitely be a little intimidating to start though. Supplies from our store - depending on budget I'd recommend: Series D+ Set XXL Palette Size 3 Series S brush (it will do everything, it's very tough, and if you like it you can always add a 5 brush S set in the future. You could also look at something like the Fauxhammer set and an XXL palette, that's a mixed one, so you get a little bit of everything brush-wise. On a minimal budget grab an S3 and a D Medium+ :) If you have any further questions let us know in another separate comment on a recent video, it's very easy for replies to get lost! In the meanwhile I'd really recommend the first section of this video for some very solid general drybrush tips explained thoroughly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYC2cpWmgc2MY5I Thanks for the comment!

This video pointed out something I should have caught myself. Gloss vs matte when it comes to drybrushing. So I have a question. I usually drybrush 'light' onto my minis starting with primed black and working through several shades of grey until a last bit of white. This inevitably produces some chalky bits, but since I go back over first with speedpaint and then normal paint for detail and weathering, it's not usually that bad. But, I think things would look even better if I used a gloss paint. So my question: what would be the best gloss black primer, gloss white paint, and several different shades of gloss grey to move up between them?
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
You don't want to go as far as gloss (it as its own issues), but you can absolutely start with satin paints, and/or paints with a lower quantity of white in them. Check out our slapchop video (bloodthirster) for more on this, you touched on it, but the speedpaint or wash stage will knock back chalkiness, however there's more you can do, as you guessed. Quick 3 points: Chaos black primer (satin step 1 - use a colour instead of grey, e.g. on bloodthirster we used word bearers red throughout - use dampening pad to carefully and predictably involve a bit of moisture, this keeps things smoother. Well noted man, you're on the brink of a load of quality improvements that will barely add any time to your painting, good luck!
@ericluczaj Жыл бұрын
It would be nice to see side by side photos (or side by side spins if you want to be fancy) in addition to the before and after spin videos sequentially (that made it even tougher to compare one to the other. I also think it put your work at a bit of comparative disadvantage for judging impact since the after result was completely painted but the before result still had many elements incomplete or still just primed.
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
Agree on all accounts here, we were pretty pushed at the end to meet our deadline, your first point would have been in the video if it weren't for this. Yup on #2, that's OK, though. Hi Byron - not sure if you'll see this, but a drybrushing video topic crossed my mind, thought it might be an interesting one to explore? We often talk about how Contrast paints are a diverse bunch, formulated differently for different colours, some are glaze-like, some are ink-like, etc. I don't think I've seen the same exploration of the properties of different paints when it comes to drybrushing, though? In part that's going to be down to how we remove as much medium as possible, and how we often only use regular layer paints. I'm not aware of any other brand that has a Dry paint range, but Citadel's Dry range is as variable as the Contrast. Some of them are like a thick mousse, Necron Compound is pure rubber that peels off in clumps, and you could butter your toast with Astorath Red. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the best/worst of the range, and the benefits/drawbacks of using them as opposed to their Layer paint equivalents? And is any other paint brand out there especially suited (or unsuited) to drybrushing?

Hey buddy, I can speed things up for you, I hope darling child is enjoying their new toy, but in the meanwhile you can purchase it separately here: store.artis-opus.com/collections/series-d-drybrushing Scroll down 'dampening pad' If you wait a couple of weeks there might be another Ninjon related product up soon, though 👀👀

@@ArtisOpus thank you! I have no idea of said child is enjoying it, it appears to have disappeared into the ether 🤷♀️😂

Very cool video and great model. It would be cool to see you teach a starting painter how to use drybrushing. Then you can show how easy or hard it is to learn. (If you need a starting painter that’s willing to learn I don’t mind volunteering 😬)

I would actually love to see a collaboration with Sorastro's Painting. I think that could be realllllly interesting given the differences in styles! Additional question though - would mixing in something like a satin varnish to a more matte paint make it easier to drybrush/yield better results?

Would love to see you collaborate with Juan Hidalgo, both of you have been massive influences on how I've learned to make use of contrast paint. Would love to see a collaboration between the two of you

As he is also in the UK, I'd love to see you put off your comfort zone and do a figurine like marvel or something like that but big, with @groundeffected, as he is also a warhammer painter (but watch out as he really loves to play with fire, like literally)

Hey buddy, oh no! Hopefully they turn up soon! We don't often, but you should keep your eyes peeled around black Friday, our shipping is extremely reasonable, too :)

@@ArtisOpus question will it be for the entire weekend or only Black Friday? Are there any discount codes? I am willing to spend some money

So many details jump off the model after Zumikito did his handywork! Maybe DD Builds as a collab? He doesn't some pretty mental freehand stuff.

For a contrast master you should work with warhipster. He does amazing contrast work.

10:48 how did the hairs from the brushes become shorter?
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
Over a couple of years they wear shorter, carefully used high quality drybrushes wear completely differently to normal brushes, the shape stays but they lose length in a uniform fashion
@Wijkert Жыл бұрын
@@ArtisOpus did not know that. You learn something new every day!

Man this was awesome... I used to think I was above average, then I saw Byron drybrush... Are links for private classes on ArtistOpus?
