For me as a Blood Angels player this is a brilliant 9.5 out of 10! You lost half a point for the red helmet w/o a skull or drop of blood on its forehead to make it a Intercessor Sergeant. So this is a Blood Angel Assault Intercessor, a Close Support and that role has yellow helmets. To me it is somewhat harder to paint the helmets to the right Battlefield role (red = Battleline, yellow = Close Support, blue = Fire Support and gold for Veteran & Command like Lt. & Cpt.) than just paint all the minis in red.
@ThePaintingCoach2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it - easy enough to leave helmets off and paint them with imperial fists yellow if you want an easy yellow helmet

Man, I need to work on my touch with the spray-priming. I found Baal red WAY too opaque for my janky priming. I got very little shading. I think I just went too heavy with the light. I also did a 3-layer prime with black, grey and white, so maybe that is too much for Baal red? Yours looks super. Fortunately, I am just getting back into painting and don't much care if some of my individual units come out janky. Great video! THX! :)

I have used the Baal red on wraithbone white and it looks really great and really pleased with it. I have begun painting black legion on the soft parts of the armour, etc, but got a bit of it on the armour itself. How do I correct that? I have tried covering it with baal red contrast paint, but it doesn't cover it. I have used Mephiston Red base paint to cover , but it looks blotchy as it's not the same colour. Any help with this would be very appreciated.

First of great video! I've been looking into getting this paint myself for BA but your video is the only one so far where the Red has looked "proper" as other videos I have looked at later they have all looked almost pink-ish in comparison to yours, is it because of your thick amount of paint or lighting you reckon? It flows really nicely for me - I did use it on a Howling Griffon terminator recently and found in some areas I needed a second coat. A bit more tricky on a dreadnought - panel at a time and a big brush to minimise the amount of brush marks

What’s the difference in primer Colors ? Why use gray or black over red for blood angels ? Real newbie question here. I’m confused
@ThePaintingCoach3 ай бұрын
For this technique you need to use a light primer for the colour to show up vibrantly. In this case I put white over black, which gave me a nice transition. When adding the contrast paint over the top, you get a nice rich red colour and also keep those transitions underneath giving you shadows and highlights. If you wanted to prime the miniature red for example, you absolutely can do this - you would need to use a different kind of paint to build up colours - contrast paint wouldn't work so you would need to use layer paints - feel free to ask any more questions

When should we use baal red over blood angels red contrast? (I think I bought the wrong thing tonight!)

@ThePaintingCoach Жыл бұрын
Depends on the contrast you use - the Baal Red here has a very strong pigment so covers well in one coat - for others you need to use a bigger brush than normal, and keep an eye on the paint as it dries - check out Juan Hidalgo for a contrast expert 👍🏻

@jasonscottsego73112 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the daft question, can someone explain the technique at the start with the spray cans
@ThePaintingCoach2 жыл бұрын
No problem - basically you spray the model black, and then from above/45 degrees you spray white - this gives you a gradient to paint over, which gives you automatic highlights and shadows - the technique is called zenithal priming
@jasonscottsego73112 жыл бұрын
@@ThePaintingCoach do you move the can/model with the white? I didn't think you'd get that kind of coverage from one direction and angle. Thanks, love the work
@ThePaintingCoach2 жыл бұрын

The Baal Red used a single pigment, so it covers really well. Generally contrast paint over large flat panels performs poorly because of how it pools. Generally though the single pigment contrasta are pretty good. You could test it on a cardboard box - spray it with some primer and see how it applies over the surface
