In the second of a 3 part video series, Andy paints the massive headline miniature from Squidmar's new Kickstarter Campaign: Champions of Sona. It's a massive project but we want to make it seem approachable and fun. In this part, the focus is on Brok the orc.

I really enjoyed this Andy. I particularly like how you make amazing looking painting so accessible. No special gimmicks or techniques, just time spent on good paint selection, and then careful application of nice layers. I also always like how you talk through when things didnt go quite to plan - it really helps those of us where this happens very regularly.

Thanks much for the tutorial and your time! Explaining your colour selections and mixture ratios is a great help. Your explanation of the gold metal painting was extremely helpful. Thank you very much!

Amazing tips. Never considered using a wash consistency to start or to get the shadows back. It all makes sense.

Hi Andy. I see many people here giving you compliments, so I will try to give a useful comment instead. This will be a degreed graphic designer's critique on some things that I suggest changing and why. Your technique with a brush is excellent, so this critique is mainly focused on color. Gold does not tarnish, and the verdigris on the headdress and staff ornament look out of place. It really stands out as incredulous. After looking up some Aztec, Mayan, and Incan gold artifacts for reference, I suggest removing the verdigris on these and making the gold brighter and leaning to the brown and orange side of gold. The process for removing impurities from gold, when smelting it for crafting would not be very good for these Orks like Central and South American tribal gold. That is why I researched central and south tribal gold for the reference material. You have enough green in the feathers, necklace, bottles, and waist ornament to compliment the skin tone nicely. The waist ornament looks very good, like bronze or an old copper. I would leave that as is. Now comes the tougher part to consider. The ork's skin color looks great even if slightly supermodel perfect. hehe. However compared to that hue the highlight on the cape and top of the owl that is showing reflection of the light source could use some warming up to better show the warm light that is reflecting off of the orc's skin. It does not look like the same light is touching the owl and fur/feather cape that is touching the orc's skin. Perhaps mixing some highlight colors on the cape and owl with some of your sunny skin tone and the yellow that you used to see if you can create a highlight that will unify the entire piece. You might want to add another brighter highlight to the skulls as well with sunny skin tone and yellow. A little white or ivory might be need to be mixed with these colors to achieve the unifying highlight tone. I hope that this was constructively helpful. I hope that this was constructively helpful.

I think you make some interesting points here. A drop shadow of the orc on the owl would've been a nice touch too. However it's a fantastic piece and especially considering the time limitation. The only point I don't necesarrily agree with is regarding the verdigris. To me, the verdigris on the gold justified (though kudos to you for the deep dive into gold). Realism is sacrificed for more visual interest. On another note, you mention that there's already enough additions of greenish/blue on the model. Some of those are fairly hidden. Furthermore, you should consider that the verdigris on the headdress adds a frame of color constrast around the face. Further strengthening the focus on the face. I must say I really enjoy seeing comments like yours around on KZbin, and I wish we had more of these types of discussions on social media platforms. It helps us share ideas and improve as a community as a whole. If you have an instagram or reddit acc through which you share your work, I'd love to see your work and give you a follow.

Wow, that's a very informative video, Andy. This a the other CoP videos you have released have so many great learning moments that have to be tried out right after. Your way of starting the skin tone with very thin paint to spot the recesses and highlights is a must try for me. Guess I have to join the CoP Patreon. 😁

That skin turned out awesome! The nmm is really nice and you nailed the feather head dress. It really pulls the eye to the face of the orc! Question concerning the patreon. Do you also habe conversion and green stuff/milliput related guides there?

@@cultofpaint I subbed yesterday. I knew your tutorials are superb and I really, really have enjoyed Barrie's tutorials! He manages to break down extremely complex and detailed sculpting into manageable chunks. Next up Elrond. Oh btw, thanks for the wolf fur guide! I tried it for my Blood bowl werewolf and was very happy with the results despite it being a first try. Just shared the WIP pic on the discord as well ;)

I'm in love with your tutorials, Andy. You explain everything with great detail and your colour selection is great. I always struggle a bit with that and it's very inspiring to hear you talk about why you choose certain paints over others. You did the same in your skin tutorial and since then I've been able to paint convincing skins and I've understood how to iterate on that. Thank you a lot!
