I have heard that it is not possible to paint TMM with oils, but I have been doing just that for many months now!
Using some "home made" Metallic oil paints created with Green Stuff World Metallic powders and linseed oil, I will show how to get a True Metallic Metal effect, including reflecting the blue of the robes.
A link to the Green Stuff World Metallic powders:

I have hundreds of tutorials for miniature painting as part of my Patreon page at / jameswappel
I also do more comprehensive video tutorial series on painting units as part of my Patreon Army Painter pledge level. These are 5 episodes long, and begin with basing the unit. From there, I take you through the entire painting process, figure by figure! I have 5 different series on Lord of the Rings miniatures, including Dol Amroth, Rohan, Harad, Morghul Knights, Army of the Dead, Iron Hills Dwarves and my Easterlings. I also have Army Painting series for Warcry, Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40k and Game of Thrones!
My most recent series was focused on creating TMM effects, and even Verdigris in oils.
I am now finished with my 27th series, which is why you gain access to over 900 hours of tutorial videos when you become a patron at that level... you can check it out here: / jameswappel
This is my Twitch channel, where you can also see how the conversion was done: / wappellious

Great video. I have some questions if you don't mind. I'm new to your channel and wonder why you choose oil paints instead of say acrylics? Can the metal pigment be mixed with some sort of water based medium instead and have the same effect? I'm trying to Figure out the most realistic metallic paint (very reflective, smooth, not glittery), Preferably in water based or oil.

Hello! And thanks so much :-) I also have a number of Twitch sessions where this kind of TMM is used (all my past sessions are saved as highlights, so it is almost like KZbin). The Green Stuff World metallic pigment powders are quite good. I mix them with linseed oil to create an oil paint. You could mix them with water I believe, but that probably won't make them permanent. Using Iridescent Pearl white powder is also important, since that is you "white" when it comes to the metallic effects. I also have several tutorials on my patreon page that show the mixing process, testing and painting. While I can't create playlists for past Twitch sessions, there are thumbnails on each video, which will say "TMM". Here's an example: www.twitch.tv/videos/1528277125

Haven't you had any issues with the solvent in these plastic droppers. I figure they should be degrading into the paint?
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 Жыл бұрын
No problem at all, since it is just the linseed oil from the paint and a high quality odorless thinner, which also comes in a plastic container

This is an absolutely awesome tutorial. I'm getting into oil painting minatures. I have a question if you don't mind. What base color should I use if is was going for orange fabric? Thanks!
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! There are no base colors as such when I do the oils, but that "pre glaze" that I show at the beginning of each session, etc. A pre glaze of Indian yellow/fanchion red might do the trick, or even Indian yellow with some other reddish brown

Hi, what about silver? Is there a silver pigment by other brand that you reccommend?
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 Жыл бұрын
The Iridescent Pearl White pigment powder is fairly common, and all you have to do is mix that with the Linseed oil to create your "whie" metal medium. Then you can mix that with the other colors to create more metallics

@@jameswappel7119 I have "iridescent pearl white" oil paint from Lefranc & Burgeois. I will give it a try. I thought that "silver" is created from aluminium powder.

Wow they look like they’ll pop on the tabletop for sure! Just wondering about the iridescent and interference paint as I’m slightly confused, am I right in thinking I can get the one tube of Williamsburg iridescent Pearl white and use it to highlight the gold - as well as reflection of surroundings by mixing it with other colours or do I lose the desirable effect. Many thanks - On another note I’m subbed on Patreon but the email with the links of each video is blank for some reason is there anyway I can request another? Cheers
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! The iridescent pearl white is essentially the metallic version of white. You can also mix it with an intense transparent yellow like Indian yellow to create a great light gold. As far as the email goes, for whatever reason gmail puts in a ton of "spaces" that I can't delete, and it pushes all the text with the links far down the page, so you have to scroll to see it. Much appreciated!!!!!

James, quick question. When painting with oils, can you just leave a mini or model overnight to continue work on it the next day ? Watching alot of your twitch videos lately during my night shifts (Europe here) I can't seem to find me for 6-7 hours straight :)
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 2 жыл бұрын
depending on what colors you are using, and how much paint you have on the figure, it could be wet for 12-24 hours later. Mine are typically dry after 8-14 hours. When you watch the Army Painting series on the patreon page, you will see that I plan for this, and use that drying to my advantage... especially with the TMM effects!

Fantastic video as always! I have tried making some paint with the GSW pigments and linseed oil, but it will never dry completely up. Even several weeks later it is still a sticky paste that you can rub off with a finger. I have tried with a little white spirit added, a lot, none, but it is the same each time. Any tips on what could be wrong?
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 2 жыл бұрын
I'm using regular unrefined linseed oil. I think the refined "boiled" linseed oil has given other folks similar results. Also, too much linseed oil in the mix will add to that drying time

@@uvathamtgo7863 It might also be worth trying something like Winsor & Newton or Gamblin Stand Oil rather than refined linseed oil. Stand oil has been slightly heated to encourage polymerization, and is engineered to dry much faster than refined linseed oil, etc. @James Wappel doesn't seem like you're in need but maybe if you get some slower drying paints discovered it would be worth throwing in the mix.
@jameswappel7119
@jameswappel7119 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks I don't use the refined linseed oil, so that has not been an issue. I know that there are a few brands that trend towards slower drying times. Some folks also mix in liguin and galkyds to make those dry at a more normal rate.
