How to paint Hot Air Balloons in Watercolour
Here is a lovely watercolour landscape of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta over the Clifton Suspension Bridge. I grew up in Bristol and the balloon fiesta was one of the biggest events of the year. The sky would fill with hot air balloons and no where did it look more impressive than over the suspension bridge.

When my children were little, and my husband was in the military, we used to spend our weekends on Coronado Island in San Diego. One weekend there was an art show, with a painting of hot air balloons over San Diego Harbor. I wanted that painting because we cherished our time there, and we were being sent to Hawaii. (I know… it was horrible! 😂) I didn’t want to spend the money, in spite of my husband’s encouragement. When I saw yours it took me back those 15 odd years. My children who were so young back then are leaving for college and in the military themselves. Thank you for this.

Lovely! I’ll definitely try this when I get more confident. I lived in the Bristol area for nine years and so this painting has special meaning for me. I used to regularly drive or walk over the Clifton Suspension Bridge into Clifton Village …and once even flew over it in a light aircraft with my husband. The Balloon Fiesta took place every year at the end of our village near Ashton Gate…and we used to get fabulous close-up views of the balloons from our home, depending on the wind direction. Thanks again!

Several years ago I was lucky enough to go ballooning. It was a perfect early evening in San Diago - clear skies, sunlight still around us. It was magical - so quiet and so still. There were 6 of us inside the "basket" and one young man proposed to his companion. Good thing for all of us, she said yes. So. seeing this painting today captures the beauty of that event. Thank you - can't wait to try it myself!!

Another really useful tutorial and more good ideas for birthday cards! We have an autumn balloon festival in York and when it gets dark they all tether on the racecourse and fire up so they glow like chinese lanterns. It is a lovely thought to dedicate it to your friend.

A glorious painting! Now I’ll have to pick something from my home city (Rockford, Illinois) to paint, lol. So sorry for your loss too Harriet. I just lost a dear friend also. Eileen was only 61 and passed within one week from pneumonia. Hard to believe with medical advances that people are still passing from it. Blessings to you and to the whole world!
