Thank you for sharing this! Our white IKEA cabinets have "yellowed" over the years (its only been 20) so this helps so much! Can't wait to get started!

I did this exact process about two years ago, and I believe I actually used the same kind of paint from Sherman Williams. I actually got the gray cabinet doors and just painted the boxes, as I had a lot of exposed sides and I don’t like their side pieces they use to cover things up. After doing this, I started wondering why everyone says you have to spray to get a perfect coat-I’m not sure I could tell the difference. That paint lays perfectly flat. Looks great!

I have the same problem. Got the gray VOXTORP fronts but they don't sell gray boxes in my country, just white... and it doesn't look good cause the fronts don't fully cover the white... I just want to paint the edges. Did you sand them or did you go straight ahead with the primer? Would help me a lot, thank you🙏🏼

I'm looking to repaint my ikea kitchen cabinets but would also like to replace the handles and knobs. The new knobs and handles will not go in the same place as the old ones though. Do you have any tips or videos on filling in the old hardware holes and installing the new hardware?

Very helpful video I was thinking of doing exactly the same for a new Ikea kitchen and this got me even more excited :) Do you need a specific type of paint as you are working in a kitchen area (I am thinking of exposure to moisture, heat as well as cleanability)? And for the cabinet edges/structure did you just use a brush and tape? many thanks!

Some places do sell specific paints for cabinets, but due to a paint shortage our Sherwin-Williams recommended their Emerald brand as a sufficient substitute. So far it's held up great and it definitely wipeable. For the cabinet faces we used a combination of brush, tape, and also a small foam roller.

Great question. I was also wondering as I may paint our island and was wondering about durability. Thanks!

A varathane layer to dd protection would be good, no?
@younghouselove Жыл бұрын
We've found it's not needed with this paint. We also don't risk the color changing or yellowing over time due to the topcoat, and it makes it easier to touch-up if needed.

Hiya, I'm thinking about doing my kitchen, obviously the drawer/cupboard front panels are not coated with paint, they feel like some sort of sticker/decal sort of thing, will it sand and prime?
@younghouselove2 жыл бұрын
You might be referring to a vinyl or thermafoil finish on your cabinets. A process like this should work, but you can always test it. on an inconspicuous spot first (like the back of a cabinet door). Also, be aware that if that sticker/decal finish is peeling anywhere, your new coat of paint will just peel with it. Good luck!

Did you paint the toe kicks with a brush rather than a roller? I am doing mine right now!
@younghouselove2 жыл бұрын
We painted ours with a roller before we installed them, but a brush would work too!

No sanding between the primer and paint coats?
@younghouselove2 жыл бұрын
It certainly wouldn't hurt, but we typically skip that step (shhh!) and haven't noticed a difference in outcome. Just be sure to do it lightly enough that you're not sanding off too much primer.

What’s the paint color on those cabinets?

It's Sherwin-Williams Artsy Pink

We have similar cabinets and we have primed and painted waited a week and the paint/primer still scratches off. Any advice?
@younghouselove2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that! Did you sand and/or use a liquid deglosser on the cabinet surface before you painted? That's often the culprit when things scrape off too easily.
@matteom55802 жыл бұрын
Wait - Did you sand from Finer to coarser?
@younghouselove2 жыл бұрын
In this case we just used the fine block because we didn't want the surface to get too roughed up. But if you want to use a coarser paper, try to work from coarse to fine.

Hi there! Great video. After a year of living and cooking in your Ikea-painted kitchen, do you regret it? Do you have to repaint soon? How well has it stood up?
@younghouselove Жыл бұрын
No regrets! We've only had a couple of scratches around the knobs (from a fingernail) but we actually find these easier to touch-up than our professionally painted cabinets in our last kitchen. The touch-up paint that the manufacturer had provided never fully matched, so having the exact matching paint in the exact matching color in this kitchen has been awesome. Definitely don't need to repaint anytime soon. :)

Minor tip on prepping, I would sand both sides at the same time before painting so you don’t damage the paint on the backs when sanding the front. It’s just the back, but anything to increase durability of the paint helps! I just painted wood cabinets with that same paint and it is great. The reason I’m watching this is I’m thinking of adding a few cabinets along the other side and using IKEA cabinets. Their white will probably match just fine, but in case it doesn’t I might paint the fronts. I’ll have to compare once my decision is made/
