I think the Iron Warriors is such a striking scheme across an army. The yellow and black gives such great opportunities for pops of interest across troops, weapons, and vehicles. Thanks so much for the tutorial.

Fun tip to try on the transfers: Instead of using the cotton swab, take an old brush that's damp, but not wet. Not using a whole lot of pressure, lay it flat against the centre of the transfer and roll it outward towards the edge. Do it the whole way around. Should push the air bubbles out without damaging the decal!

I saw a squad of true scaled Iron Warriors on Pintrest a while back where the hazard stripe motif had been reduced to a single yellow bar over black and the skull emblem replaced with a stylized horse similar to ones carved into chalk hillsides in England - made me realize how much improvisation you can bring to an established scheme. Great work - inspired, liked and subscribed.

Tastyy! So glad it worked out well, dude. I can imagine it looks the business. Note: you could try it over gold if you wanted a warmer final colour (check our blood knight out from a while back). You get a very crisp clean red over the silver, though.

Very cool indeed. Having it all in front of me, I think you could actually optimise the painting even more by: -zenithal Leadbelcher Spray over a black primer to eliminate the first drybrushing stage -block in the chevron areas with yellow (mix Averland Sunset and Yriel Yellow for better coverage) and add stripes in black instead of the other way round -use Black Templar Contrast (or Grim Black Speedpaint) for shoulder pads to eliminate the edge buffing step -use the rust solution step before the eyes step to cut the tidying up All this would be particularly effective when painting in batches of 5, 10, or even 20.

I think the Dark Angel is the most efficient so far, easy chipping results and getting a good contrast between black and shiny silver. You could use that same technique for Raven Guard and Iron Hands, probably Night Lords but with blue instead of black. I´m interested if that also works with white and dark steel, for White Scars and World Eaters. Also would love to see a tutorial like this done for the new Contemptor Dread.

I think the Iron warrior would look most impressive multiplied. Even just a squad of them would look great. It's all down to the hazard stripes I think. Adds a bit of interest and you can vary the location of the hazard stripes to give them some slight individuality.

I'm going to steal this process and add some Darklord Gray (or whatever Army Painter calls their dark gray color) speed paint over top to create an awesome Iron Hands scheme for my 40k army :) One thing I struggle with is when I go to drybrush the edges of my mini, I end up getting paint all over the flat surfaces and not just on the edges for the edge highlight. Is dry brushing the wrong approach for that?

I’m liking the dirty down rust, my only gripe is the color always goes to that light rust when it is thinned, I like the undiluted color as well but it’s a bit too viscous straight out the pot to do pin line effects.

Ok, I’ll be the one to say it. That model looked great right up until the rust. Then it was ruined. On terrain, sure, use the rust as a wash and wipe off. On minis it needs to be ‘placed” with a small brush carefully. Once dried, if it’s to dark, dampen the same small brush and work the areas you want lighter rust. Sorry Byron, your work is usually impeccable but that rust. Put it down, forget it exists as a “quick fix” and go back to painting well.
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 2 жыл бұрын
You already said I painted it well, pre rust? 😅 All good dude, I knew it'd divide people, in the premier it was a 60/40 split rust/pre-rust. If it's not for you, you can stop and save the last 2mins, I had loads of fun, and think what this adds over an army is positive, especially once you get to vehicles, both ways would look great, though.
@Th3D4nny
@Th3D4nny 2 жыл бұрын
Disagree. It's a matter of opinion, there is no right or wrong way. Personally I love heavy weathering like this, it just adds so much visual interest. In 1 rust step the model went from tin man to rugged veteran of the most desperate warzones in the age of darkness.. Clean Iron warriors bah, bunch of rookies on garrison duty.
@andybillco2424
@andybillco2424 2 жыл бұрын
@@Th3D4nny I think you misunderstand. I love weathered models. Especially Iron Warriors. I just don’t like this crux that is Dirty Down rust. I use this product for film and TV shoots and it’s fantastic for aging up a location and then cleaning with soap and water so it was like you were never there. But… the product creates 1:1 scale rust. Human scale rust. On miniatures it looks wrong, off scale and makes it look like a rusted miniature not a tiny person with rusty armour. My second gripe with it is the bottle neck is too small forcing you to stick your entire brush inside and having no idea how much is coming out. And considering you need a pointed brush to place it delicately, that’s impossible. You’re forced to use and old crappy brush. You can’t decant it because it evaporates and you can’t leave the lid off for the same reason. By the time you’ve moved it around with water to get it to look realistic you’d have better spent your time with various shades of brown orange thinned paint and some weathering powders that you can place exactly where it would really be rusty. Sorry, love this product for real world use. Hate it for miniatures. And now for a year or so we’ll just see dirty down rusty models on every gaming table. Your opinion may differ and that’s ok. I’m not one of those “my opinion MUST be your opinion types”. Byron is a great painter. He doesn’t need a product like this to make fantastic weathered models.

Why did you water it down? Noo... Just turned it into yellow/brown paint by doing that. You're supposed to apply it direct from the bottle to get the rust effect? This looks more like desert weathering than rust. Caked on sand and dust. Still looks cool tbh. But I don't think that was what you were going for. If you want a recess rust effect, trying to use this like a wash is not going to work. You probably have to varnish the model, apply direct from the bottle all over, then remove from the raised areas with white spirit or something. That's probably the only effective way to speed paint recess rust with this stuff. Watering it down is a terrible idea. It all goes yellow.
