For real. I'm way too intimidated by the idea of doing NMM, but I love watching him teach how to do it.

Vince, I think one of your strengths is painting things the actual colours they should be, rather than the colours we all think they are. Your metallics, either TMM or NMM, gold, steel, bronze or copper, end up matching your reference photos very convincingly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge as ever. But I think Larry is looking quite gaunt, has he been on a diet?

Hey Vince! Great video! I've recently picked up the 40K Ultimate Starter kit and am gonna make the Space Marines into Salamanders. Any advice on how to go about painting their skin/eyes/mouth? I'm comfortable with skin tones usually, but I'm afraid of making the minis very visually uninteresting if something as important as the face just fades into the background in the overall composition. Thanks in advance 😁

I find my issue with any NNM is that its not so much a technical challenge as it is a conceptual challenge in a much as I can't always picture where the highlights need to land, but try, try and try again and one day I'll get it right.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 ай бұрын
It’s tough and it’s something that comes overtime as you think more about light and learn more about light and play more with NMM, but it’s a challenge for sure

Great lesson, green grey as a highlight is counterintuitive, but makes so much sense once you see it. Thank you. Love the choice to go with copper and that general cooler color scheme on this model. If we wanted to take the weathering further, would we work things up like you do here but go with a less subtle turquoise glazing, or comeback with a separate more chalky white+turquoise at a wash consistency? Sub question, if we are planning on going more intense with the weathering, should we invest the time in nmm copper, or just go with quality metallics and focus on the verdigris?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 ай бұрын
Non-metallic metals and weathering are really their own conversation. It’s very complicated to do but effectively in simplest terms. Yes, I would just continue pushing the color tones. You see me using here up into hiding some of that verdigris up to a sort of white blue green in the shadows.

Hey Vince, are there any differences you'd make for doing brass or is it much the same? I feel like brass is a slightly warmer hue but I'm not sure.

Vincey V! My man, first up love the videos. Quick question, essentially any NMM is wet blending correct? I followed you wet blending video first and you said don't thin your paints. I've noticed I'm having an easier time blending NMM with the paint thinned. Is NMM blending the time you bend the thicker paint to blend rule? Thanks handsome!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 ай бұрын
Different techniques for different goals. Working with thicker paints and wet blending is good for when you have large flat surfaces and need to establish travel of color (so large areas of skin, a cloak, etc.). Then you have smaller areas like this, where you need more to work in traditional layers, then you work thinner and thinner into glazes to bring it all together.

Can someone answer this question for me, why is non metallic metals desired as opposed to you know metallic metals? I may have missed a whole thing but I just do t get it.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 ай бұрын
Sure happy to answer so non-metallic metal allows you to control the light in a way that true metals do not with true metals. The light reflects wherever it reflects because it is a glossy service so your lighting scheme is literally locked to whatever light that figure happens to be sitting in in reality at that moment. With non-metallic metal you can create much more complex, nuanced, interesting, varied, toned shaped lighting experiences that you simply can’t do with metallic paints. Think of canvas painting when they’re doing metal and trying to create a lighting situation of where they figure on the canvas is standing they’re not using metallic paints. They’re using regular paints and then creating the illusion non-metallic metal as a concept and painting goes back to, original Chinese artwork from the 1600s BCE I believe where they were using black-and-white to create the effect of non-metallic in various paintings

NMM is really only impressive for display pieces because they sit in a display case. Pick up a NMM painted mini and turn it around in your hands and look at it at different angles and NMM just looks like the non-metallic color used, ie brown, orange, red, etc

Unfortunately, I'm currently not able to paint anymore. 1. Because of lack of time (in my opinion). 2. Because I'm too impatient and wish for better results faster. It's difficult for me to tell if I'm actually improving or if I'm stagnating. That's why I've put the entire hobby on hold for now. However, I still very much enjoy watching your videos which I continue to find very inspiring. Thank you for that And keep evolving. Never stay as you are, but always become a little bit better ❤️

I feel you man, for me it was about reducing friction to paint, it's pretty uncommon I couldn't find an hour somewhere if everything else was ready. So that meant dedicated desk that's always ready with paints on hand, it meant buying more 3d prints so I didn't spend my time assembling models as much which I personally don't enjoy.
