I love rough paper also for seascapes,landscapes especially if unsung granulating watercolour paints...but hot press is the most for Botanicals,portraits,realism,mix media and stylised,cartoonish like painting styles...I find it best if making later prints too

Thanks so much. People have been saying it's more suitable to illustration, which seems to be more my style. The staying power of laid down colour is exactly what I'm looking for, so I'm convinced!

Beautiful, Rachel. I've tried hot press in the past....I guess lots of water is the secret. I tried it in New Mexico.....so hot and dry. I'll have to try it again now that I'm in South Carolina. Loved this rendering of your Lilac kitty.

Yes, I shy away from hot press but now that I have more painting experience, it's fun to experiment with at least.

7:33 Yes, this! I was using some QoR on cold-pressed for a painting, but stupidly "tested" on scrap which turned out to be hot-pressed: on the hot-pressed scrap, I tried several PR101s wet-on-wet to get a white rock with "veins" and it was _fantastic!_ I even had a regular Schminke red to highlight the veins: perfecto! But I prepped the real painting (cold-pressed) and barely touched it to the paper white circle. Instant Venetian red rock. There was no blotting ("staining" color is putting it lightly), nothing. No white left! (So I let it dry and glazed over it to be a different color entirely). But that hot-pressed was able to control the QoR and get a really "mild" dispersion, dried quickly, and allowed me to go in with the (wet-on-dry) pyrole red to define the lines! It's so pretty, I'm thinking about redoing my other painting on hot-pressed. But 2 days ago when it happened, I just stared in horror 😂 I was so close to tossing out that tube of paint, but it was just user error. (I'll be experimenting much more with my QoRs on hot-pressed now: whole different experience!) Edit: and I want to try your Siamese. Lovely composition!

I've tried hot press paper off and on and I never liked the results I got. One problem I had was even after wetting the paper it seemed to dry out again rather quickly and I had trouble getting soft edges. I did read a tip in an art book where the artist said she did what she called double priming the paper with water. She wet the area she wanted to paint and waited for that to soak in and then she would go over it a second time with water. She said it kept the paper wet longer as the water would get down into the paper better. You did a beautiful job with painting on hot press.

Hi Crystal, I don't know what part of the country you live in but I have lived and painted in the Southeast where it is very humid like Rachel does, and the west, currently the high desert where it is really dry. Paper dries a lot faster out here. That double priming sounds like a good idea., Don

I'll have to try that double wetting technique, although it seemed to stay wet enough for me during this project.

Thank you for this. I accidentally ordered 5 sheets of 300lb Arches hot press instead of cold press and just realized it when I opened the box but it was 2 years ago so I'm doubtful that the store will do an exchange. It was over $100 so I'm really not wanting to waste it. I've never had luck with hot press in the past but now I'll be forced to learn. haha

I like hot pressed but most tutorials use cold pressed, so that's what l stick with. I noticed quite a difference between their surfaces, so l wondered why it was hard to tell which kind you used for the earlier paintings. I loove your work btw.

Beautiful painting - I've just recently started experimenting with hot press so this is helpful. :) I think one reason you don't see PB17 anymore is PB16 has replaced it - it's another phthalo colour nearly identical to PB17, and apparently marginally more lightfast. Marine blue is PB16 in Holbein's line, if you haven't tried it, but PB16 is becoming easier to find in other brands too, usually named Phthalo Turquoise. I really love the colour; I've replaced my Phthalo blue Green shade with it on my main palette :)

I was told that PB17 is just hard to come by these days. I am not a fan of Phthalos as they are SO staining. They are beautiful though!
@LindsayKitson
@LindsayKitson 3 жыл бұрын
@@rachelsstudiodotcom PB17 is actually a phthalo too - the proper name is Pthalocyanine Cyan. The consensus seems to be that PB16 tends to be less staining than the PB15s though, so it may still be worth a try.

I could not "like" your video. While your information about using hot press paper was pretty good, twice you mentioned and point to a painting that was out of video range (so it was pointless). In addition, you made reference to a facebook group but didn't include a link or even the name of the group. I found these points frustrating.
